Sage Watson’s season has taken a turn for the worse.
The Olympian from Seven Persons revealed Tuesday she’s suffering from an unspecified foot injury, and won’t be able to compete at nationals this weekend in Ottawa.
“Last week I suffered a stress injury in my foot and it is in my best health that I forgo racing this weekend,” she wrote in a post on Twitter. “I am now focusing on recovery and training so I can make a strong comeback.”
Watson was part of the Canadian 4×400 metre relay team that set a meet record in Burnaby, B.C. at the Harry Jerome International Classic last Wednesday. She didn’t compete in her specialty, the 400 metre hurdles.
Competing against a team from China, Watson anchored the team of Madeline Price, Aiyanna Stiverne and Travia Jones to a time of 3:32.08 — four seconds faster than the old meet record.
In past years Watson has used the Jerome as a prelude to nationals. Her first season as a professional had gone well otherwise, with a win in Japan and a third-place finish in Norway.
She also has a bad history of foot trouble. A stress fracture in 2014 forced her to take the year off. It’s unknown if this injury is related.
Redcliff’s Sarah Mickey is entered in both the para women’s discus and javelin at nationals.
