Medicine Hat News Facing the team with the Western Major Baseball League’s worst record, the Medicine Hat Mavericks didn’t let up. A six-run first inning paced the Mavs to a 15-1 win in Yorkton Thursday, extending their winning streak to eight. With four walks and three singles before the host Cardinals recorded an out, Medicine Hat was in control from the outset. But Yorkton did have a chance to respond. Yorkton loaded the bases in their half of the first on Hat starter Jumpei Akunama. But Akunama got a strikeout, then stranded two aboard in the second before settling down. He got the win, striking out seven and not allowing a run in seven innings. Carson Johnson went 4-for-6, Colton Wright was 3-for-4 and every Hat starter scored at least once in the romp. Ryan Thrasher took the loss for the last-place Cardinals, not recording an out in the awful first frame. Medicine Hat is now 18-3, while Yorkton is 4-16. The teams play again Friday, the last game of Medicine Hat’s week-long road trip. They’re home Sunday against Swift Current. 9
