Mavericks hit double digits again

Medicine Hat News

You knew it was going to be another familiar result for the Medicine Hat Mavericks when, in the second inning of their game at the Lethbridge Bulls, David Salgueiro tripled, then stole home.

The bold play was one of many offensive highlights in a 13-5 Mavs win, the team’s fifth in a row.

Shortstop Carson Johnson had the hottest bat, going 4-for-6 with 4 RBI, but the truth is everyone in the lineup is hitting well with the team’s batting average well over .300.

Johnson is at .435, now leading the Western Major Baseball League.

Jared Libke (3-1) gave up four runs over 6 2/3 innings for the win, all but one Hat batter got a hit and the team began its last long road trip with a bang.

Salgueiro’s steal of home happened in a two-run second inning. It was 5-0 before the Bulls got a run and the Mavericks defence didn’t make any errors.

Andrew Grieder (1-2) took the loss for Lethbridge despite striking out nine over 6 1/3 innings. The Bulls, now 7-12, got home runs from Brett Mercier and Kaleb Warden but both were solo shots.

Medicine Hat, now 15-3, heads east to play 6-12 Melville tonight and tomorrow, then 4-14 Yorkton Thursday and Friday. Their next home game is Canada Day against Swift Current.
