For the second straight night the Medicine Hat Mavericks beat the host Giants in Fort McMurray.

But after needing an extra inning to get the job done Tuesday, starting pitcher Jumpei Akanuma made things a lot simpler in a 5-2 win.

Akanuma, originally from Japan, let up six hits and struck out four with no walks in eight innings. Fort McMurray got three of those hits in the sixth inning but the visitors already had their five runs on the board.

Louie Canjura and Zack Gray had two-out RBI hits in the third, Canjura doubled and scored in a two-run fifth and David Vilches doubled and scored in the sixth to give Akanuma all the cushion he needed. Gray’s RBI was from a double, his eighth in 11 games.

Tyler Moskalyk took the loss, giving up nine hits and all five runs.

Canjura finished 2-for-4 with 2 RBI as the Mavs improved to 12-3, best in the Western Major Baseball League’s Western Division. Junior Pimentel worked a scoreless ninth for the save, inducing a 6-4-3 double play to end procedings in front of an announced crowd of 567 at Shell Place.

The teams remain in Fort McMurray for two more games. Medicine Hat returns home Sunday to host the Lethbridge Bulls.
