Medicine Hat News Hat High’s track and field team produced six medals including three gold on the first day of Alberta Schools Athletic Association provincials. At Red Deer Friday, the reigning 4A team champions were all over the results sheets, and often at the top. Joshua Suelzle nearly set a provincial record, throwing the discus 40.34 metres to win his junior boys division by a whopping four metres. The provincial record remained at 40.53. Suelzle will be a favourite in other throwing events Saturday as the meet wraps up. Teammate Kyle Spackman had arguably the busiest day of anyone on the Mohawks roster, competing in four events. He won the junior boys pole vault, clearing 3.15 metres, then was an agonizing three centimetres short of the podium in long jump and was also fourth in triple jump. To cap it all off he also ran 100 metre hurdles heats and advanced to the final, where he was eighth. Also taking a gold was senior girls high jumper Gloria Lokbai, who cleared 1.66 metres. McCoy’s Madison Kane-Rissling was tied for the second-highest clearance at 1.55 metres, but finished fourth after two other jumpers also cleared 1.55 but with fewer misses earlier in the event. Rhiannon Ware wound up her high school athletics career with a silver medal in the senior girls 80 metre hurdles, crossing the line in 12.53 seconds. Also with a second-place finish was junior boys 100 metre hurdler Orin May, who had a time of 14.39 seconds. Cambria Rattai also had a silver in intellectual girls shot put with a throw of 3.48 metres. Lots more medals are on the line Saturday, and with nearly three dozen competitors in Red Deer, Hat High will be in the running to repeat its team title. 10
