Losing a zone final made the Monsignor McCoy Colts play an extra game at provincials this week.

The defending Alberta 3A girls basketball champs won it, and now they’ll play for bronze.

At Cochrane, McCoy lost 70-52 to top-ranked St. Peter the Apostle Friday night in a semifinal. It was their third game of the tournament, their first coming Thursday because they were ranked fifth due to a South Zone final loss to Taber’s WR Myers. Only the top four teams got first-round byes.

McCoy opened with a 76-46 win over Beaverlodge Thursday morning, in which Hannah Stark and Courtney Rissling each had 10 points.

On Friday morning, facing Brooks — who they’d beat for the local league title already this month — the Colts won 66-59. Stark had eight of her 22 points in the crucial final quarter, while no other Colt had more than six points.

No statistics were available from the loss to St. Peter, a school in Spruce Grove.

Myers won the other semifinal over Wetaskiwin 77-49.

McCoy won its first provincial crown a year ago as the host team at the Family Leisure Centre, and has remained a top-three ranked team all season.
