The Medicine Hat Travelodge Cubs used every ounce left in the tank to bring the Cochrane Generals into a winner-take-all third period on Sunday at the Spray Lakes Family Sports Centre, but their luck finally ran out in the third.
After falling 17-0 to Cochrane in Game 1 of the best-of-three Heritage Junior Hockey League playoff opener, the Cubs rallied to steal a 2-1 victory on home ice in Game 2 before finally giving way in the third period of Sunday’s series finale in a 6-4 loss.
Cubs goaltender Josh Breznik put up a wall in Game 2 on Saturday at the Kinplex, stopping an astonishing 80 shots to maintain his team’s narrow lead and force a series-deciding third game — but the 18-year-old Coaldale product could only hold on for so long.
Breznik went on to hold his team in a 4-4 contest after 40 minutes of Game 3, but the Generals finally avoided the catastrophic upset with two goals in the final frame —including a hat trick goal from Will Gretton.
Jareh Gray and Jesse Barsness potted Medicine Hat’s goals in Game 2, with Matt Clement picking up assists on both.
The Generals advance to take on the Okotoks Bisons in the second round.
