Medicine Hat News Former figure skater Gay Dubeau and recently retired hockey player Jenna Cunningham have been recognized for their respective impacts on the Gas City sports community with a pair of nominations to the Medicine Hat Sports Wall of Fame. The Urban Environment and Recreation Advisory Board recommended that city council approve the induction of Dubeau and Cunningham to the Sports Wall of Fame after their decades worth of contributions to figure skating and female hockey in Medicine Hat. Dubeau, a retired figure skater, has been involved in the sport for 44 years. After competing as an individual at the Canada Figure Skating Championship in 1973, Dubeau went on to start the Cypress School of Skating in 1987. Dubeau earned the title of Alberta Figure Skating Coach of the Year in the 2001-02 season, worked with Skate Canada to expand the curriculum for the CanPowerSkate Course and Pre Power Program for young skaters. She also serves as course facilitator for Skate Canada and works with the Notre Dame Academy Hockey Program. Cunningham became the first woman from Medicine Hat to be recruited to the Canadian Women’s Hockey League with the Calgary Inferno and went on to hoist the Clarkson Cup with the team in 2016. Cunningham became a broadcaster with the CWHL in 2016-17 and coaches young women through hockey and power skating camps. The 29-year-old former forward collected 40 goals and 28 assists in 108 career CWHL games and became the first player in Inferno history to record 50 career points in the 2014-15 season. 6
