It was a great night for football Friday, as the Medicine Hat High School Mohawks defeated the Brooks Buffalos 14-0 at the Methanex Bowl.

“That was an extremely hard-fought game,” said Hat High head coach Quinn Skelton. “This game was a battle. The kids out of Brooks really come to play, and they’re really athletic. I’m really proud of our guys for sticking to our game and hanging in there — I know it wasn’t easy, but we got the win.”

The teams headed into the final quarter of play tied at zeroes, before Hat High was able to put up two touchdowns in the final frame to take home the win.

“It did come down to the end there, all of the points came right at the end of the game,” said Skelton. “I think it came down to us just keeping at it and that we kept trying. Our athletes made some really nice plays at the end of the game, and we were fortunate to pop a couple in at the end of the game.”

Skelton singled out a play by Hat High receiver Zach Campbell on the Mohawks’ second touchdown.

“It’s probably the best play he’s made for us,” he said. “It was a great pass and catch, that was probably 25 yards there, and a really good run after — it was really nice.”

Skelton says the defence played a huge role in the victory.

“Any time you shut a team out, it’s huge,” he said. “There was a lot of bend, but don’t break back there. Our defence was able to hang in there against some really great athletes on that Brooks team, being able to contain them and hold them off the board is great for our team.”

Now sitting at a record of four wins and one loss, Hat High will play the undefeated Crescent Heights High School Vikings Friday night, 7:30 p.m. at the Methanex Bowl.

“We need to be prepared for this one,” said Skelton. “They’re a good team and we know it’ll be a tough game.”
