With little more than a week left in the regular season, the Medicine Hat Mavericks are pretty much down to figuring out who they’ll play and where in the opening round of Western Major Baseball League playoffs.

The Mavs dropped their second game in a row to Weyburn Thursday, a 15-2 loss in which the host Beavers put up five runs in the first inning and never looked back.

Starting pitcher Barry Caine only lasted 1 2/3 innings, giving up seven hits including a Cam Williams home run in the ugly first frame.

Ryan Johnson got the win for Weyburn, pulled after 5 1/3 innings after walking six batters but striking out seven and only letting up two runs on four hits.

Medicine Hat falls to 21-19, tied in the Western Conference with fourth-place Edmonton (20-18). Weyburn (24-16) has already clinched a playoff spot but is chasing 26-12 Regina and Swift Current for top spot in the Eastern Conference.
