Medicine Hat News

Cody Florkowski said he’d step up for the Medicine Hat Cubs, and so far he’s been true to his word.

The 20-year-old forward leads the junior B team in scoring with 20 points in 10 games heading into a two-game home set with Banff that begins tonight (8:45 p.m., Kinplex).

True, last year’s leading scorer Kyle Funk has 16 points in only six games, but those numbers were expected. Last season Florkowski had 29 points in 33 games.

He also had 331 penalty minutes in the 2012-13 campaign, thus limiting his own ice time. So far Florkowski has 36 penalty minutes and is on pace to have less than 150 this season.

Banff beat Medicine Hat in the Cubs’ first game of the season and has been a surprise so far after previously being one of the Heritage league’s doormats. They’re 5-4, just a game back of 6-4 Medicine Hat.

The teams will rematch on Thursday night starting at 8 p.m. as well. The Cubs end their week at Stettler on Saturday.
