SHIRLEY JEAN SUTHERLAND

SHIRLEY JEAN SUTHERLAND 1934-2026 It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our mom Shirley Jean Sutherland of Medicine Hat, Alberta.
Shirley was predeceased by her husband Charles in 2020, her oldest son Robin, in 201, and her youngest son Bruce, in 2024 as well as her parents, Bill and Margaret Leach.
Mom was born in Empress, Alberta but at a very young age her family moved to Medicine Hat where she spent just about all of her life. She spent many years working in the office at the Medicine Hat Co-op before retiring and focused on quilting on knitting which she excelled at. Mom and Dad were active church members and contributed much of their time to various activities at Westminster United Church. They both loved to travel and spent many hours on the highways of Canada going from coast to coast as well as from north to south in much of our country. They also made trips to the UK and New Zealand but Canada was their favorite place to see. Mom was an excellent gardener and we were treated to a lot of wonderful meals out of the produce from her garden.
Shirley leaves to cherish her memory, her eldest daughter Heather (Stan) Hirsch, her youngest daughter Holly (Kirk Woiken) Sutherland and Valeria Good (Bruce Sutherland).
She will be very missed by her grandchildren Tara and William Sutherland, Charles (Holly) Sutherland, Kimberley Hirsch and Kerry (Anna Kauffman) Hirsch as well as her great grandchildren
Willow, Cali, Felix, Sophia and Wynn. Shirley will be deeply missed by her sister, Doreen Storey and her brother Jim (Delores) Leach and their families as well as her many friends in Medicine Hat.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Holyrood Extended Care Home in Edmonton for the supportive care shown to our mom and to us while she was a resident.
Shirley’s life will be remembered by her family and friends without the proceedings of a formal service. Please remember her in your own way.

LAWRENCE MURRAY SLACK

LAWRENCE MURRAY SLACK
Lawrence Murray Slack, beloved husband of Beth Slack, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family, after a courageous battle with cancer, on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, at the age of 72 years. Besides his loving wife, Larry is survived by his six children, Graham (Debbie), Jonathan (Itzel), Shaina, Richard (Cass), Quinton (Luisa), and Janaya (Alex); his two grandchildren, Abigail and Emerson and his three siblings Maurice (Wanda), Duane (Andrea), and Sharon (John) Wicker. Every one of his nieces and nephews also had a place in his heart. Larry was predeceased by his infant daughter, Angela (February 13, 1986), and his parents, Reverend Melvin and Enid Slack. Larry was born on April 27, 1953, in Wai, India where his parents served as missionaries. He was raised there and attended international boarding schools until he was 16 years old and often recounted fond memories from these times. He then moved back to Calgary, Alberta where he finished high school. In 1978, Larry met Beth at Berean Bible College. He then went on to obtain his Computer Science degree at the University of Calgary. After completing their post-secondary studies, Larry and Beth were married on July 30, 1983. After the birth of their first child, Graham, they moved to Papua New Guinea for three years, where Larry taught at the University of Technology. The family then moved back to Calgary, where they welcomed the arrival of Jonathan and Shaina. In 1990, Larry accepted a position at Medicine Hat College, and they moved to Medicine Hat. While there, they welcomed their three final children, Richard, Quinton, and Janaya. Their young family soon moved south of the city to start a berry farm where they shared many happy years together. Larry taught Computer Sciences until his retirement in 2018, where he thoroughly enjoyed working alongside his colleagues and students. Above all, Larry was a man of deep faith, high morals, and integrity. He loved the Lord and served in many practical ways, including mission committees, youth ministries, and school boards. He was known for his generosity and genuine interest in others. We are forever impacted by and grateful for the kindness, laughter, prayer, and love that Larry gifted to us over many years. He will be remembered as a wonderful husband, father, grandpa, brother, uncle, teacher and friend. Larry lived life so well and loved deeply…and yet was so ready to head to his home in heaven. Dale was a builder at heart. Whether he was working in trailer factories, siding houses, or building new homes, he took pride in the work of his hands. He was a “lottery-winning dreamer” with a heart of gold, especially when it came to his grandkids-who could always count on him for an ice cream treat. He was often a man of few words, but his character spoke volumes and he leaves behind a legacy of hard work, integrity and devotion to those he loved.
