GEORGE BECHTLOFF
1935 – GEORGE BECHTLOFF – 2026
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of George Bechtloff, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, who left us on February 6, 2026, at the age of 90 years. Born on July 2, 1935, in Manyberries, Alberta, son of Karl and Anna (nee, Veek) Bechtloff, he grew up in an environment that instilled values of hard work and kindness. These principles would guide him throughout his life, shaping him into the gentle soul that his family and friends adored. George was preceded in death by his loving parents, as well as his dear sisters, Rose (Glen) Stryker, Emma (Earl) Stryker and Minnie (Adam) Jetter. On November 1, 1957, George married Doreen Just. Together, they shared 68 years of marriage, creating a life filled with love, laughter, and countless cherished memories. George’s devotion to Doreen was unwavering, and his happiest moments were spent in the company of his family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Doreen, and their three daughters, Shevon (Bob) Bechtloff, Cynette (Dana) Knodel, and Vonda (Dean) Cosgrove. George was a proud grandfather to Bryson, Emilie, Alysha, Tashena, Ritchel, and Robert, and he took immense joy in being a great-grandfather to five precious great-grandchildren. George’s work ethic was unparalleled. He began his career farming alongside his parents and then apprenticing as an electrician. Following his marriage, George and Doreen purchased the farm that became the heart of the family until they sold it in 1995 and retired outside Fort Macleod. In the early 2000s, he and Doreen built their dream retirement home in Dunmore, Alberta, where they enjoyed many joyful years together. A man of many trades, George had a natural aptitude for mechanical and structural problem-solving, often applying the skills and mindset of an engineer or carpenter, but above all, he was a farmer at heart. His talents and hard-earned skills were matched only by his kindness and generosity. He was known for his genuine nature and willingness to help anyone in need, expecting nothing in return. George’s legacy is one of selflessness, compassion, and love. He was not a man of many words or a loud voice, but his gentle smirk spoke volumes and said everything that needed to be said. He will be deeply and lovingly missed by all who knew him. In the spirit of his legacy, the family encourages all who knew him to remember him through acts of kindness and love. No formal service will be held at this time. In lieu of flowers, donations in George’s memory can be made to the Alzheimer Society, 101-1201 Kingsway Avenue SE, Medicine Hat, AB T1A 2Y2.
