GERTRUDE MOYNES

GERTRUDE MOYNES November 29, 1932 – December 21, 2025
It is with great sadness that the family announces the sudden passing of their beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Gertrude ‘Gertie’ Moynes on Sunday, December 21, 2025, while surrounded by her loving family. Gertie is pre-deceased by her husband, Jim (2012); parents, Eric and Erna Zordel; sisters, Elfriede (in infancy) and Dorothy as well as her brother, Herb.
Gertie spent her entire childhood on the farm at Divide, Saskatchewan and enjoyed every aspect of the farming life. She attended elementary school at Divide and completed her high school diploma in Frontier, Saskatchewan, furthering her education at Normal School in Moose Jaw to attain her teacher’s certificate there. She taught briefly at Lowell school in a one-room schoolhouse located one mile from her eventual homestead. It was while living and teaching in the area around Eastend that she met her future husband, Jim Moynes, whom she married in July of 1955. Jim and Gertie settled and made their life on the farm just north of where he grew up, and lived and thrived there until 2012. She gave up teaching to focus on the farm and raise her family. The farm was her greatest achievement, and she enjoyed every aspect of life as a farm wife and the many lifelong friendships she and Jim made along the way. She took great pride in her yard which was always kept in a meticulous fashion, and her large garden which was extremely well tended and prolific. Her tomato crop was legendary, providing delicious canned tomatoes for her family’s use throughout the year. Due to Jim’s illness in 2012, they moved permanently into Medicine Hat where she enjoyed her new surroundings and friendships made there.
Gertie is survived by her sons: Ronald (Linda) and his children, Tyler (Shelby) and Mykayla (Shawn Jones); Brian (Darcy) and his children, Riley (Alice) and Raegan (Eric Tessier); four great-grandchildren, Sierra and Emerson Jones, Felix Tessier and Penelope Moynes as well as another great-grandson arriving in March. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Linda Zordel and was blessed with the love and support of several nieces and nephews and their families.

DOROTHY SUZZANNE HOGARTH

DOROTHY SUZZANNE HOGARTH May 11th, 1958 January 5th, 2026 Dorothy Hogarth passed away on January 5th, 2026, at the age of 67 years. She leaves to cherish her memory her mother, Marie Tschritter; sisters, Sandra Kish and Sharen (Dave) Gauld; brother, Wesley Tschritter. Dorothy is predeceased by her father, Henry Tschritter.
Dorothy was born and raised in Medicine Hat. After high school, she moved around a lot to other places such as Lethbridge, AB, Victoria, BC and Edmonton where she started her own business as a website developer. Due to health, she moved back to Medicine Hat. Dorothy lived at Medicine Hat Housing for 16 years and while she was there, she made many friends, looked after the flowers and was always willing to lend a hand with anything needing attention. Over the past year, her health declined rapidly.
She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

GLORIA RUTH WEISS (NÉE HUBER)

GLORIA RUTH WEISS (NÉE HUBER) March 31, 1937 – December 30, 2026 Gloria Ruth Weiss (née Huber) was born in Serath, Saskatchewan, and grew up on the family farm in Olds, Alberta. She passed away peacefully on December 30, 2026, and was welcomed into heaven by her Lord. Gloria graduated from the University of Alberta in 1959 and devoted her career to nursing, later completing postgraduate studies in public health before retiring in 1985. In 1963, she married Roy A. Weiss at East Olds Baptist Church, sharing 53 years of marriage until his passing in 2016. She will be lovingly remembered by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, her sister, Pearl and Gene Huber; as well as many nieces and nephews. Gloria was predeceased by her parents, Philip and Freida Huber; her brother, Len Huber and her beloved husband, Roy.
Gloria will be remembered for her kindness, patience, generosity, and deep love for her family. A funeral service will be held January 14 at 11:00 a.m. at the Wuerfel Auditorium, South Country Village, 1720 Bell Street SW, Medicine Hat, AB with the interment to follow at Saamis Prairie View Cemetery, 5160 Gershaw Drive SW, Medicine Hat, AB. EDITH BURNISTON 1925 ~ 2026 Edith Mary Burniston, beloved wife of the late Lawrence “Larry” Burniston, passed away on Sunday, January 4, 2026, at the age of 100 years. She leaves to cherish her memory; four children, Gladys (Ed) Winder, Mary Meier, Richard (Debbie) Burniston, and Loreen Burniston; three grandchildren, Bev (Barry) Gutfriend, Larry (Danielle Reckseidler) Winder, and Bryan (Ashley) Litton; twelve great grandchildren, nine great great grandchildren, and two great great great grandchildren. Edith is predeceased by one son-in-law, Wayne Meier; two grand children, Peggy Carnegie (Meier), and Brent Meier; one great great grandchild, Ocean Oldford; one brother, John Gustafson, and one sister, Vera Holmes. Edith was born August 1, 1925, to Seth and Pheobe Gustafson in Medicine Hat. She lived in Medicine Hat for most of her life aside from the four years she lived in England during WWII. Edith worked at the glass factory, Sunnyside Haven, and for the City of Medicine Hat daycare. She liked to stay active in her yard, tending to her garden and flowers. Edith also enjoyed the gym and continued working out in her chair for as long as she could. The funeral service will be held in the PATTISON FUNERAL HOME & CELEBRATION OF LIFE CENTRE on Monday, January 12, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. with LifeCelebrant David Townsend officiating. VELMA KIENZLE 1930 ~ 2025 Velma Darlene Kienzle of Bow Island, beloved wife of the late Ruben Kienzle, passed away on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, at the age of 95 years. She leaves to cherish her memory three children, Blain (Cathy) Kienzle, Judy (Randy) Headrick, Sharon Rudd; her daughter-in-law, Anieta Kienzle, and her son-in-law, Terry Lane; twelve grandchildren, Cameron (Nicole) Kienzle, Wade Kienzle, Megan Kienzle, Erin (Landon) Vegter, Jennifer Headrick-Neill, Nelson Headrick, Laurae Rudd, Kaylin Rudd, Jordan Kienzle, Adam Kienzle, Shane (Tina) Lane, and Jessa (Aaron) Addison; twenty three great grandchildren; her sister-in-law, Shirley McClellan, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her husband, Ruben Kienzle; her parents, Ken and Blanche McClellan; her son, Rodger Kienzle; her son-in-law, Ken Rudd; her daughter, Debby Lane; her granddaughter, Desiree Kienzle; one brother, Lloyd McClellan; four sisters, Grace Anderson, Myrtle Heatherington, Pearl Switzer, and Mary Geier. Velma was an excellent painter and enjoyed quilting and gardening. She was an active volunteer in the community with the St Andrew’s U.C.W and the Bow Island Women Institute. MELVIN WITTKE

MELVIN WITTKE 1945 ~ 2025
Melvin Harvey Wittke the beloved husband of Ardeth Wittke went to be with the Lord on Wednesday December 17, 2025, at the age of 80 years. He leaves to cherish his memory two children; Rhonda (Lawson) Ring of Calgary, Matthew (Kim) Wittke of Sherwood Park; two step-children; Sharlyn Bender and Trevor Bender both of Medicine Hat; seven grandchildren; Brittany Murphy, Brookelynn (Cordel) Evans, Isabel (Brendon) Degner, Cambria Rattai, Emilee Wittke, Felicity Bender and MacKenzee Wittke and five great grandchildren; Paxton, Kai, Summer, Macy and Kendrick. One brother Lorence (Diane) Wittke, one sister-in-law Elsie Wittke; as well as several cousins, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Ida and Oscar Wittke and one brother Eugene Wittke.
Mel was born on April 24, 1945, in Medicine Hat, Alberta to Oscar and Ida Wittke and was the youngest of three brothers. Mel spent much of his adolescent years helping out in his father’s Blacksmith shop and later went to school to become a welder. His first job was working for his brothers at Wittke Iron Works and later started his own business MW Welding Ltd. where he worked on pipelines and then held a long-term contract at CFB Suffield. He also opened Brier Park Suspension Ltd. in the mid 70’s. He was creative and talented and could construct everything from intricate metal artwork and furniture to repairing suspensions for heavy equipment. He served for many years on the Alberta Apprenticeship Board and finished his working career as a welding instructor at the Medicine Hat College. Mel had a love for sports and was a natural athlete. He loved baseball and hockey. While attending college he played hockey for the Medicine Hat College Antelope and later in his years, Old-Timers and Church Hockey. He was a true outdoorsman and would never miss a season of hunting or fishing. The family has wonderful memories making homemade sausage, salami, pepperoni and feasting on his famous fish fry’s.
In 1986 Mel married Ardeth and they blended their families together. He loved to sing in the church choir and host Bible Studies. In 1993, Mel and Ardeth built a home in the country. Mel used his talent and passion to construct numerous goose nests, metal fences and corrals for his beloved his cattle; he called them all by name! He truly enjoyed country life and would often watch all types of wildlife in the field below their home. As Mel’s health diminished, they moved back into town in 2022. In 2024, Mel was transferred to the Riverview Care Center for the remainder of his days. He was surrounded by loved ones when he went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Mel will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him. The family would like to thank the staff at Riverview for their exceptional love and care.

JOHN FRANKLIN 1967 ~ 2026 John Christopher Franklin, beloved husband of Kelly Franklin of Redcliff, passed away on Thursday, January 1, 2026, at the age of 58 years.
