They lived on the family farm for a couple years and then moved into Fox Valley in August 1966 where they lived for 22 years and then they bought a little house on 2nd Street so they could semi retire to Medicine Hat. They moved to Medicine Hat permanently in the fall of 1988. Val continued to farm until his retirement in 1999.
They built their dream house in Medicine Hat in 2002. Dad was diagnosed with COPD in 2020 and it was hard for dad to keep up with the yardwork and the big house, so they downsized to a condo in Fairway Village in May 2021. Dad was also diagnosed with Dementia. Mom took very good care of him, until Jan 2023 when his health declined that he needed more help. We moved him into Meadow Ridge where he lived until he lost his mobility in spring of 2025 and we then moved him into River Ridge, until his passing.

Josephina and Joseph Volk were married on June 24, 1955. They settled on a farm northwest of Fox Valley where they raised their family of 8 children. Life on the farm was tough. The first few years they had no electricity, no running water just a lot of hard work. Mom was definitely a homesteader.
In 1998 Joe and Josephina retired to Maple Creek. This was a time for mom to relax and enjoy the fruits of her labour. She wasn’t quite ready to hang up her work hat yet so, she took a few jobs around town to earn a bit of her own money. She also baked and sold her baked goods at the farmers market. For the most part mom’s retirement years were filled with new friends and family. She was a member of the CWL for 64 years. She also had her collection of dolls and angels.
Josephina entered into Cypress Lodge in 2022 where she was well cared for by everyone. The staff at Cypress Lodge were like family and we cannot express enough our appreciation for the wonderful care that they provided.

TRAVIS CURTIS

TRAVIS CURTIS April 8, 1980 ~ August 26, 2025
Sadly, we announce the passing of Travis Michael Curtis, who died suddenly from a heart attack on August 26, 2025, at 45 years of age.
Travis was born in Medicine Hat on April 8, 1980, the first child in our family and a much-loved son and big brother. He spent many years working as a custodian at Crescent Heights High School, a role he carried out with dedication. He also worked as a truck driver and took pride in earning his Class 1 driver’s license. Though shy, he was a kind and gentle man with a goofy streak that could brighten an entire room. Travis enjoyed learning about guns and found joy in target shooting and archery. Faith was at the heart of his life; he found comfort in reading his bible and shared his devotion with the community through volunteering at St. Patrick’s Church.
Travis is lovingly remembered by his parents, Sherry and Henry Curtis; best friend, Debbie Brawn; sisters, Tessa Curtis and Jelena Komanchuk (Jeb) and cherished nieces and nephews, Mataya, Izaya, Jacob and Ariah.
Please join us at Holy Family Parish, 1451 Strachan Road S.E., Medicine Hat on Saturday, September 6, 2025, at 11:00 a.m., with Travis’ uncle, Deacon Robert Risling, assisting Father Fernando Genogaling, who will preside as we gather to honour and remember Travis and his life. All are welcome to attend and a lunch will follow the service.
