She worked alongside her father as a tailor from the age of fourteen until she was twenty-four. In 1958, Cathy accepted an invitation to work in Canada with her aunt and uncle. What was meant to be a two-year adventure turned into a lifetime when she met a handsome young Dutchman, Everett. Together, they built a beautiful life in Canada.
She took great pride in many aspects of her life, including her sewing and knitting skills, the beautiful garden she cultivated with Everett, and her deep commitment to volunteering at St. Patrick’s, the CWL, and within her community. Cathy knitted over 1,200 newborn baby hats for the MHRH maternity ward. In her spare time, she sang with the St. Pat’s Church Choir and was an active participant in knitting and quilting clubs. Together with Everett, she traveled extensively throughout the world, creating lasting memories with family and friends.
Though Cathy’s health declined over the past decade due to dementia and ultimately Alzheimer’s, she never lost her infectious sense of humor, her chatty nature or her joy for life. Cathy was a devoted mother, Oma and friend to all who had the privilege of knowing her.

DOREEN ROTH

DOREEN ROTH December 1st, 1938 August 11th, 2025
Doreen Roth was born on December 1, 1938, in Lipton, Saskatchewan to Adolph and Olga Schmidt. She passed on to Heaven on August 11, 2025. As a young child, the family moved to Regina, Saskatchewan where she lived until she graduated from High School. After High School, she moved to Medicine Hat, Alberta to live with her older sister, Eleanor. She began working at the Medicine Hat City Hall and became active with the youth group at Memorial Church. It was through her friends at Memorial Church that she met Emanual (Manny) Roth from Burstall, Saskatchewan. Doreen and Manny were married on December 12, 1959, and from here she made her way to live on the farm that Manny had purchased just outside of Burstall. Here she began her farm life. Doreen was a city girl and knew nothing of this new life. A favorite story she liked to tell was the first spring when Manny came and said they needed to go pick rocks; to which Doreen replied, “I thought the pioneers did that”. But Doreen soon learned that the rocks came back every year.

Doreen knew little about farm life, but she was taken under the wing of dear relatives – Dolly Eslinger, Joyce Roth, and Aunt Hilda Roth who helped her learn and excel and she did excel. Doreen became well known for her amazing baked goods and homemade meals. People could stop by at any time and within a few minutes the table would be set with wonderful treats and a hot cup of coffee. Doreen was Manny’s right-hand man all the years they farmed, and she became a skilled combine operator. The annual branding was another favorite time of year and Doreen enjoyed preparing all the food for the big day. Everything set out that day came from Doreen’s kitchen.

Her years in Burstall were full of activity but the Burstall Hope Evangelical Church was her center point. She taught Sunday School and organized many Christmas pageants. But her greatest gift was singing as part of a trio with Janet and Idella Ehnisz. These three ladies brought the gift of song to many people and many occasions throughout the Burstall area.

When the time came to leave the farm and move to Medicine Hat, Doreen began to fill her time cooking at Hillcrest Evangelical Church with her many friends. She also enjoyed volunteering at the Gleaners. Doreen and Manny also began to travel with their friends and they had many adventures.

Doreen most of all was “mom” to her three daughters. In the early days, she spent many hours sewing dresses for special occasions. Doreen also loved to read and her home was filled with books, this love of reading and books is a very special gift she passed on to her daughters and grandchildren.

Doreen is preceded in death by her parents, Adolph and Olga Schmidt; her sisters, Irene Mills and Ruth Naismith; brother, Ervin Smith. She is survived by her beloved husband, Manny; daughters, sons-in-law and grandchildren: Glenda Giles (Clint) of Cochrane, AB and their children, Randi-Lynn Giles (Josh Zhivago), Cole Giles (Rebecca), and Taylor Giles all of Cochrane, AB; Becky Roth (Dave Purcell) of Calgary, AB and their daughter, Morgan Roth-Purcell of Calgary, AB; Terry Roth (Michael Eggleton) of Wasilla, AK and sons, Roman Hamm and Dmitry Hamm of Anchorage, AK. Sister, Eleanor Knodel of Medicine Hat, AB; brothers, Rueben Schmidt of Penticton, BC and Kenny Smith of Comox, BC.

The Graveside Service will be held at Hillside Cemetery on Friday, August 15th at 2:00pm. The family will be planning a Celebration of Life at a later date for family and close friends.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers and cards, donations be made in Doreen’s name to the Prairie Gleaners Society by sending a cheque to PO Box 656 Medicine Hat, AB T1A 7G6 or via e-transfer to info@prairiegleaners.com. Together they raised two children, Jen Walyuchow and Paul Walyuchow (Char); grandchildren, Caleb, Davik and Gavril. EDNA DIETERLE

EDNA DIETERLE 1929 ~ 2025
Edna Elsie Dieterle, beloved wife of the late Clifford Dieterle, passed away on August 12, 2025, at the age of 95 years. Her memory will be forever cherished in the hearts of her four children Dale (Karen), Eugene (Evelyn), Brad (Kathy), and Lynn Glauser, 15 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren, as well as her nieces and nephews. She is survived by her sister-in-law Joyce Neigum. She was predeceased by her parents Christ and Otelia May, parents-in-law Alexander and Josephine Dieterle, husband Clifford, son Dale, sister Darlene, grandchildren Clinton and Crystal, great grandchildren Chance and Ariel, brothers-in-law Clarence Dieterle, Elisworth Dieterle, James (Jim) Dieterle, Jacob Neigum and sisters-in-law Gladys Dieterle and Adela Dieterle
Edna was born in Burstall and attended Acreworth school in the Burstall area. Mom looked forward to entering a career in nursing but decided to stay home and work with her parents on the farm until she was married.
Mom was a humble, introverted person, often putting others’ wants and needs above her own, she was always concerned about the rest of the family’s well-being. I am sure that her most often spoke words were, “how are you feeling, is everyone else ok”? Mom, a true homemaker, loved to cook and bake, and we loved to eat! I am sure there were times if mom didn’t make quite enough for lunch or dinner, she would pass off her portion to one of us, just to have the satisfaction of knowing that we were all full. She loved her flowers and would spend hours in her flower gardens. Shopping for bedding plants and starting some of her own was a highlight. When she transplanted them, I am sure she gave them all a little pinch and talked to each one as she placed them into their new home. She took a lot of pride in seeing them grow and flourish. Dad always grew the largest vegetable gardens, Mom would work alongside Dad, weeding for hours, talking about the garden and the dreaded wild portulaca. Mom loved her crafts, she stitched embroidered, crocheted, and was involved in ceramics. Mom also did liquid embroidery; I am sure she bought every color that was invented. During our visits to the Senior home we often talked about family, she always took a special interest in her grandchildren, always looking forward to seeing pictures of them and commenting how fast they were growing up. We often talked about the old days; there were lots of stories that would often times lead to laughter. A story that sticks in our minds is about a badger that Uncle Jim tamed, the badger and Mom were never on nice terms as he would often snarl at her. One day the badger and Mom confronted each other by the woodshed, the badger as the aggressor proceeded towards Mom, luckily, she had a corn broom in her hands and used it to swat the badger. Hitting the badger on the nose, the nose being the badger’s Achilles heel, made him come in second. Uncle Jim was not pleased, but he did get over it! Her time in the Senior home was spent folding towels and bibs for pass time. She enjoyed attending Church service, playing Bingo, Ramo, doing crosswords and coloring pictures. Her favorite day of the week was Saturday, knowing that at 7 pm, Polka music was playing on TV. Because of her hearing disability, she would crank up the volume, I am sure everyone else in the home also knew it was Saturday night! “Tears in our eyes will wipe away, but the love in our hearts are here to stay, Now you are peacefully sleeping, away from all your pain, the love in our hearts will always remain. Words are few, thoughts are deep, Memories of you are ours to keep.” Family and friends who wish to pay their respects may do so one hour prior to the service. The funeral service will be held in the PATTISON FUNERAL HOME & CELEBRATION OF LIFE CENTRE on Saturday, August 16, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor John-Mark Bredeson officiating. The service will be live streamed. Those who wish to attend virtually, please visit Edna’s obituary page on our website, for the link. Interment will take place at 3:00 p.m. in the Burstall Cemetery. After the service friends and family are invited to further share this day with Edna’s family and friends. If friends & family so desire, memorial tributes can be made in memory of Edna Dieterle in the form of donations to the Leader Long Term Care Facility or the Burstall St. Paul Lutheran Church.
