MITSUYE `AMY’ YAMAMOTO
MITSUYE ‘AMY’ YAMAMOTO
June 15, 1919 ~ July 25, 2025
It is with much sadness that I announce the passing of my mother, Mitsuye “Amy” Yamamoto. She was predeceased by her parents, Keijiro and Yukino Matsui; husband, Shigeru “Sam” Yamamoto; daughters, Joyce and Doris; son, Bob (Eliza) and her five brothers and their wives. Amy is survived by her son, Roy; grandson, Lawrence; sister, Sumiye Nishiguchi as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Amy was born in Port Alice, B.C. She spent her first three years there followed by a decade in Japan before moving back to Canada. She spent her teenage years working on her parent’s fruit farm in the Fraser Valley, what is now Abbotsford. The 30’s were difficult times, but they were the best years in Mom’s life. She was young, they had their farm, a house and many good friends and neighbours. Then came the War and their internment in 1942. That began a life of extreme hardship for Amy and the family. They were moved to Coaldale, Alberta area that spring arriving with only what they could carry. It was so cold… she really disliked the cold.
On April 20, 1944, Amy married Shigeru “Sam” Yamamoto, then began a lifetime as a wife, mother and unwavering family supporter.
In the decades that followed, she worked hard and tirelessly in the fields of sugar beets and hops, stooking fields of grain or weeding and harvesting dad’s vegetable gardens in Brooks and finally Medicine Hat, all the while raising her family. Amy worked in housekeeping at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital for two decades before her retirement, never missing a day. She loved kids and she babysat everyone.
Amy so loved flowers and even at 105, she would be out in the garden tending to them kneeling, bending, weeding and watering. Remarkable!
Never complaining, I do recall her saying many times how lucky and grateful she was to have met so many wonderful people in her journey.
A lifetime of caring and support, a generation of honour and integrity and more so perseverance, an era of hard work comes to a close, and that, as Mom would say, was her “destiny”. One hundred years gone by in the blink of an eye.
“Oyasumi nasai”. Good night. To all the staff at St. Joseph’s Home – Carmel Hospice, an ineffable “Thank you” for your kindness. Amy’s life will be silently honoured. Memorial donations may be directed to St. Joseph’s Home – Carmel Hospice, 156 – 3 Street N.E., Medicine Hat, Alberta, T1A 5M1. (Condolences may be expressed by visiting

LORRAINE SCHWENGLER
LORRAINE SCHWENGLER November 8, 1942 ~ July 22, 2025
It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of our wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, Lorraine Adele Schwengler, on Tuesday, July 22nd, 2025.
Lorraine will be missed and remembered by her husband of 60 years, Jerry; her daughter, Tannis (Stormr) and her son, Trent (Michelle); grandchildren: Tyler, Kaitlyn (Dustin), Raeanne (Boyd), Jerrick and Jaxson; great-grandchildren, Declan, Adeline and Blaire; brother, Darcy (Carol); sisters-in-law, Lorraine (Carl), Terri and Shirley along with many nieces, nephews and friends. Lorraine was predeceased by her parents, Archie (1986) and Anne (2006); brother, Conrad (2022) and brother-in-law, Richard (2002)
Lorraine was born on November 8, 1942, to Archie and Anne Skaalrud in Wadena, Saskatchewan and later moved to Regina. In 1962 when Lorraine was 20, she and her friend Verna decided to work in various cities, making their way to California. However, in 1963, at a dance one night in Calgary, Lorraine met Jerry, which foiled her plans to move to California. Jerry and Lorraine were married in 1965 and resided in Calgary until 1967, when they packed up and moved to Terrace. While in Terrace for nine years, Jerry and Lorraine had Tannis in 1969 and Trent in 1974.
In 1976, Jerry was offered a job that included a move to Medicine Hat where much of Jerry’s family already resided. Jerry accepted the position and they made the move. Medicine Hat is where they stayed to make their permanent home. While in Medicine Hat, Lorraine applied for and became employed by Health Products where she worked for almost 40 years. Working at Health Products was not only her job but also became her passion, where she enjoyed working with the public and helping people to the best of her ability.
Jerry and Lorraine lived on an acreage for almost 30 years, where Lorraine enjoyed many pets that included her “buddies,” as she called them, ducks, geese, and chickens. She also loved having her grandchildren come and stay with her often entertaining the kids so enthusiastically that they wanted to stay at Grandma’s house.
If you have ever met Lorraine, the chances are high that you didn’t get a handshake; instead, you received a Lorraine hug. She will be missed by many.
The family would like to acknowledge the staff at River Ridge Seniors Village, where Lorraine resided for the last 7 months of her life. You, the staff, were all amazing in your care of our mother. The family thanks you.
A Celebration of Lorraine’s life will be held at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, 901 – 13 Street S.W., Medicine Hat on Thursday, August 7, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Murray Jaster officiating. Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery. Lorraine’s service will be live-streamed. Those wishing to attend the service virtually may do so by visiting the Cook Southland website and selecting the View Broadcast button on the homepage at service time. DAVID PETRIE
1948 DAVID PETRIE – 2025
It is with inconsolable grief that we announce the unexpected passing of David Wayne Petrie this July at Foothills ICU, surrounded by his loving family. He fought a good fight, having beat colon cancer ten years ago, but it got him in the end no pun intended (though that would have made him chuckle). David’s sense of humor was ever-present, even in the hardest moments.
Born in Toronto to David Petrie and Anne Massie, David was an only child who faced early loss with resilience, after his father passed away when David was just eleven. He graduated third in his Engineering class at the University of Toronto with honours just a month after his mother’s passing. A natural leader from a young age, David was one of only two Eaton’s Junior Councillor Representatives at Nelson Boylan Secondary School. His early career was as diverse as it was energetic selling real estate, installing carpets, teaching scuba diving, and even winning some rally trophies. In 1973, David met Heather at Toronto’s CIL Paint Lab at Castlefield and Caledonia. Ever the strategist, he sent his friend Wayne Voyce to her desk to scope things out. What followed were many late-night conversations about the meanings of time. David never wasted time when he knew something was right, and by December 1974, they were married a union of unconditional love that has lasted 50 years and will continue into eternity. A few years later, they welcomed their daughter, Meredith. From that moment on, David was her unwavering champion offering encouragement, wisdom, and a safe harbor through life’s storms. David’s career was marked by integrity, ethics, and unstoppable drive. During a challenging period of unemployment, he found fulfillment teaching Adult Education in Red Deer and still made it home each night to Calgary to be with his family. Soon after, he joined TransCanada Pipelines, a company he had always dreamed of working for, as a consultant for its subsidiary Cancarb. After becoming permanent and making the move to Medicine Hat, he finished his career as President of Cancarb (Tokai Carbon Group). He loved the job dearly and considered his colleagues family. David loved to cook, especially with Meredith, sharing a passion for bold flavours and wok hei. He read the Medicine Hat News daily, enjoyed the “Ticked Off and Tickled Pink” section, and had a soft spot for every stray cat that crossed his path. Honest to a fault likely the last person feeding parking meters at YXH he always sought the good in others. He is survived by his beloved wife, Heather; daughter, Meredith; and son-in-law, Michael Paget. Also grieving are Michael’s parents, Don and Jan Paget; his sisters-in-law, Dr. Jacqueline (Paget) Pradko (husband, Dr. Jim Pradko and son, Blake) and Christine (Paget) Rimac (husband, Zvonko and sons, Matthew and Spencer); and David’s brother-in-law, Bradley Scott (wife, Agnes). David also leaves behind countless friends across the globe. The family would like to thank those at Medicine Hat Regional Hospital who really connected with David during his time there, and to Candice from the Foothills ICU whose compassion was immeasurable! A celebration of life will be held in September 2025. Details to follow on the Saamis memorial page (
https://www.saamis.com). The family invites those who knew and appreciated David to share a memory on the memorial page In lieu of flowers, donations in David’s memory may be made to the Community Foundation of Southeastern Alberta to support a fund that will serve as a lasting legacy in his honor. Ways to give can be found at

LYLE HILLIS
1936 LYLE HILLIS – 2025
Lyle Arthur Hillis, February 17, 1936 July 31, 2025, was the second child of seven, born to Arthur and Maisie Hillis. He grew up on a farm in Carlea and enjoyed a fulfilling career with SaskPower, serving his last years in management. It was in his early years, working on a crew that brought power to many locations in Saskatchewan, that he met his future wife, Joyce. They married on April 2, 1955, and raised five children. Lyle’s job enabled he and Joyce to make many new friends and experience different communities while living in Aneroid, Gull Lake, Moosejaw and Prince Albert.
Despite his busy work and family life, Lyle went back to school and earned his grade 12 diploma. Lyle would never refer to himself as an intellectual, but he was an avid reader, and often (out of necessity) taught himself many new things, such as home renovations, building a garage, renovating a school bus into a motor home, playing the guitar and banjo (not always well), lathing and wood carving. Knowing Joyce’s fear of snakes, he even built a fold-up camping trailer so they could go camping (because tenting was out of the question).
Lyle and Joyce spent many happy times in northern Saskatchewan with friends and family, enjoying fishing and fireside sing-alongs. As well, they loved spending many winter months in Texas, where they enjoyed golf, cards, shuffle, and many social gatherings with friends.
Lyle was the kind of man who was helpful, thoughtful, and gave generously of his time if he could be useful. He shared his knowledge with his children, including whittling, fishing, hunting, renovations, and vehicle maintenance. Throughout his life, Lyle was community-minded – a member of the Elks club, a senior volunteer (even though he was one himself), and with the United Church in his early years. One of the things Lyle inadvertently passed onto his children was trying new things. This was evident in Lyle’s willingness to learn to use and enjoy computer technology in his later years.
After Joyce’s passing in 2022, Lyle continued to live independently right up until his passing, while enjoying his hobbies of golf and carving. He always looked forward to his visits with his family and friends, whether it was in person or virtually. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren would always say that he gave the best hugs and that he was a source of comfort, which certainly speaks to his love of family.
Lyle is lovingly remembered by his children, Doug (Karen Chad; children, Kit (Julene), Katie and Mitch (Emily)), Shelley Tien (Joe; children, Amanda Finke (Craig) and Carrie Anne Tien-Sander (Simon Sander), Brian (Kate Tseng) and Karen Steed (Colin; children, Finn and Lilly), great grandchildren Daizee, Brianna, Joseph, Brennan, Averie, and Bowyn.
Also surviving him is his brother Dale (Jeanette), brothers-in-law, Jimmy Morgan (Kathy) and Delmar Morgan (Sheryl), numerous nephews and nieces, and many good friends.Lyle was predeceased by his wife, Joyce and his son, Rick (surviving children Cullen and Cassidy).Respecting Lyle’s wishes, there will be no memorial service. However, knowing Lyle, we are sure he would like everyone to spend a moment giving thanks to the wonderful family and friends we have in our lives. Lyle will be interred with his wife, Joyce and son, Rick at Saltcoats Cemetery. Condolences may be sent through
