MITSUYE `AMY’ YAMAMOTO
MITSUYE ‘AMY’ YAMAMOTO
June 15, 1919 ~ July 25, 2025
It is with much sadness that I announce the passing of my mother, Mitsuye “Amy” Yamamoto. She was predeceased by her parents, Keijiro and Yukino Matsui; husband, Shigeru “Sam” Yamamoto; daughters, Joyce and Doris; son, Bob (Eliza) and her five brothers and their wives. Amy is survived by her son, Roy; grandson, Lawrence; sister, Sumiye Nishiguchi as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Amy was born in Port Alice, B.C. She spent her first three years there followed by a decade in Japan before moving back to Canada. She spent her teenage years working on her parent’s fruit farm in the Fraser Valley, what is now Abbotsford. The 30’s were difficult times, but they were the best years in Mom’s life. She was young, they had their farm, a house and many good friends and neighbours. Then came the War and their internment in 1942. That began a life of extreme hardship for Amy and the family. They were moved to Coaldale, Alberta area that spring arriving with only what they could carry. It was so cold… she really disliked the cold.
On April 20, 1944, Amy married Shigeru “Sam” Yamamoto, then began a lifetime as a wife, mother and unwavering family supporter.
In the decades that followed, she worked hard and tirelessly in the fields of sugar beets and hops, stooking fields of grain or weeding and harvesting dad’s vegetable gardens in Brooks and finally Medicine Hat, all the while raising her family. Amy worked in housekeeping at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital for two decades before her retirement, never missing a day. She loved kids and she babysat everyone.
Amy so loved flowers and even at 105, she would be out in the garden tending to them kneeling, bending, weeding and watering. Remarkable!
Never complaining, I do recall her saying many times how lucky and grateful she was to have met so many wonderful people in her journey.
A lifetime of caring and support, a generation of honour and integrity and more so perseverance, an era of hard work comes to a close, and that, as Mom would say, was her “destiny”. One hundred years gone by in the blink of an eye.
“Oyasumi nasai”. Good night. To all the staff at St. Joseph’s Home – Carmel Hospice, an ineffable “Thank you” for your kindness. Amy’s life will be silently honoured. Memorial donations may be directed to St. Joseph’s Home – Carmel Hospice, 156 – 3 Street N.E., Medicine Hat, Alberta, T1A 5M1. (Condolences may be expressed by visiting

LORRAINE SCHWENGLER
LORRAINE SCHWENGLER November 8, 1942 ~ July 22, 2025
It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of our wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, Lorraine Adele Schwengler, on Tuesday, July 22nd, 2025.
Lorraine will be missed and remembered by her husband of 60 years, Jerry; her daughter, Tannis (Stormr) and her son, Trent (Michelle); grandchildren: Tyler, Kaitlyn (Dustin), Raeanne (Boyd), Jerrick and Jaxson; great-grandchildren, Declan, Adeline and Blaire; brother, Darcy (Carol); sisters-in-law, Lorraine (Carl), Terri and Shirley along with many nieces, nephews and friends. Lorraine was predeceased by her parents, Archie (1986) and Anne (2006); brother, Conrad (2022) and brother-in-law, Richard (2002)
Lorraine was born on November 8, 1942, to Archie and Anne Skaalrud in Wadena, Saskatchewan and later moved to Regina. In 1962 when Lorraine was 20, she and her friend Verna decided to work in various cities, making their way to California. However, in 1963, at a dance one night in Calgary, Lorraine met Jerry, which foiled her plans to move to California. Jerry and Lorraine were married in 1965 and resided in Calgary until 1967, when they packed up and moved to Terrace. While in Terrace for nine years, Jerry and Lorraine had Tannis in 1969 and Trent in 1974.
In 1976, Jerry was offered a job that included a move to Medicine Hat where much of Jerry’s family already resided. Jerry accepted the position and they made the move. Medicine Hat is where they stayed to make their permanent home. While in Medicine Hat, Lorraine applied for and became employed by Health Products where she worked for almost 40 years. Working at Health Products was not only her job but also became her passion, where she enjoyed working with the public and helping people to the best of her ability.
Jerry and Lorraine lived on an acreage for almost 30 years, where Lorraine enjoyed many pets that included her “buddies,” as she called them, ducks, geese, and chickens. She also loved having her grandchildren come and stay with her often entertaining the kids so enthusiastically that they wanted to stay at Grandma’s house.
If you have ever met Lorraine, the chances are high that you didn’t get a handshake; instead, you received a Lorraine hug. She will be missed by many.
The family would like to acknowledge the staff at River Ridge Seniors Village, where Lorraine resided for the last 7 months of her life. You, the staff, were all amazing in your care of our mother. The family thanks you.
A Celebration of Lorraine’s life will be held at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, 901 – 13 Street S.W., Medicine Hat on Thursday, August 7, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Murray Jaster officiating. Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery. Lorraine’s service will be live-streamed. ANNE MARION LEMARE
ANNE MARION LEMARE October 22nd, 1928 July 29th, 2025
It is with much heartache that we announce the passing of our Mom, Anne Lemare on July 29, 2025, at the age of 96 years. She will be lovingly remembered by her children, Gloria (Wayne) Stubert, Shirley (Randy) Rinker, Donna (Kelly) Piwarczyk, David (Wanda) Lemare and Dennis (Laurie) Lemare. Her grandchildren Christie (Brian) Stacey, Michelle (Chris) Laing and Gage Lemare. Her great grandchildren Ashley, Eric, Hailey and Kaiden. She is also survived by Carl Lemare and her sisters in law, Martha Neigum, Rose Neigum and her best friend and partner in all fun things, Joyce Neigum.
Anne was predeceased by her parents George and Elizabeth Neigum and 13 brothers and sisters, Caroline (Tony) Jangula, George (Anne) Neigum, Betty (Peter) Antoni, Jenny (George) Rosenau, Julia (Stuart) Snell, Katie (Mike) Marshall, Sam Neigum, Jake Neigum, Maggie (Lloyd) Shiness, John Neigum, Tony (Valerie) Neigum, Fred and Nicky Neigum and her grandson TJ.
Anne was born on the family farm in Mendham, SK on October 22, 1928. She attended school at Gascoigne, SK and at the age of 17 left home to move to Acadia Valley, AB employed as a Mothers Helper and then later on worked at the hotel. It was there she was having a cup of coffee with a friend and met Paul Knapik. They were married on July 20, 1949, when she was 20 years old. She enjoyed the farming life and welcomed three daughters into their lives before Paul was taken much too soon in 1961. Anne continued on the farm until marrying Carl Lemare in July 1964. They farmed from a distance while living in Stettler and then Medicine Hat before moving back to the farm full time in 1969. Together they had 2 sons who eventually took over the family farm in later years. Carl and Anne enjoyed their travels over the years with family and friends. Mom was known far and wide for her fabulous cooking as well as her amazing baking, especially her kuchen. Her German noodle dishes were a regular occurrence, and nobody ever left her table hungry. It did not matter how many people showed up at the farm with no notice, Mom had a 5-course meal on the table within 30 minutes. Mom was a real social butterfly, and she loved to dance most of all. There was not a social event for miles around that didn’t see Mom on the dance floor. She was known for her flair in her wardrobe and the more sparkles and sequins, the better. Her flashy wardrobe and her red lipstick were her trademark. She enjoyed many a curling bonspiel in her day, was always ready for a road trip and always had a few jokes ready to tell. In her later years, she resided at The Wellington in Medicine Hat where she made many wonderful friends and participated in every social event she could find. She loved playing cards and especially crib and was at every music event. She was baking right up until 6 weeks before her passing. She was one of a kind and will be dearly missed.
Our family would like to say a special Thank You to the wonderful staff at St Joseph’s Carmel Hospice who provided a comforting and loving environment for Moms last part of her journey.
Funeral Mass will be held at Holy Family Parish on Thursday, August 7th at 11:00am. A live stream of the service will be available to watch on Holy Family’s YouTube channel under the heading “Anne Lemare”. Condolences may be made at

GERALD WISE
GERALD WISE 1935 ~ 2025 Gerald Wise, beloved friend to all he met passed away unexpectedly in Calgary, on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, at the age of 90 years old. Jerry was born on April 8, 1935, to Michael and Leah Wise, in Assiniboia, Saskatchewan, and was the younger brother of Jack Wise. Jerry lived a gentle, joyful life filled with rhythm and connection to all he met. He was a man who found meaning in small rituals such as his morning coffee, his favourite tune, or the satisfying crack of a bowling ball down a polished lane. Jerry loved words and delighted in seeing them written down, especially when they carried the shape of a memory or moment worth holding. Jerry’s unique stories, phrases and expressions will always be remembered in our hearts. Among the most meaningful presences in Jerry’s life was his mom and dad, his brother Jack Wise and his sister-in-law Evelyn Wise, as well as his extended family Sylvia Marshall and Blaine, Matthew, and Parker Donaldson whose love and support were a constant light in his later years. Jerry also shared a deep bond with Cleo, who opened her home and heart to Jerry offering him comfort and support over many years. Jerrys second family was all those at Vecova, who over many years cared and loved him and brought him a sense of belonging and community. Jerry was also part of the Bethtzedec congregation in Calgary, and enjoyed attending the synagogue and celebrating Jewish High Holidays.
Jerry will be laid to rest beside his mom and dad, on Friday, August 1, 2025, at 2:00 p.m., at the Hillside Cemetery in Medicine Hat with Rabbi Russell Jayne officiating. In his honour, those who knew him are invited to write a memory, share a favourite song, or sip a cup of coffee with presence and gratitude. Let Jerry’s memory move through us – softly, like music.
