ROBERT PLANTE 1967 ~ 2025
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Robert James Plante. He passed away peacefully at St. Joseph’s Home – Carmel Hospice in Medicine Hat after a short, but courageous battle with cancer on Thursday, July 3, 2025, at the age of 58 with his family by his side.
He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter and many cherished memories. Left to cherish Rob’s memory, are his loving wife of 31 years, Michele, and his children, Ashley and Michael. He is survived by his mother, Carolin Plante; his siblings, Ed (Shelley) Plante, Jo (Gary) Schlenker, Paul Plante, Jack (Laurie) Plante and Laureen (Wayne) Getz; mother-in-law, Ferne Gedak; sisters-in-law, Gerrie (Darren) Begg and Shelley (Doug) Edward, as well as many cherished nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends. He was predeceased by his father, Edward Plante and father-in-law, Tom Gedak.
Rob was born on February 8, 1967 in Porcupine Plain, Saskatchewan where he grew up on the family farm with his five siblings. He was an outdoorsman at heart and would go back to the farm any chance he got.
He graduated high school in 1985 and moved to Medicine Hat to start his career. This is also where he met his love, Michele, and they married in 1993 then started their life together and were blessed with two children.
Rob was a well-respected heavy equipment operator, pipeline superintendent and pipeline inspector for the past 38 years. His work took him all around the western provinces throughout his career, where he made many long-lasting friendships over the years.
In his free time Rob could be found in the garage fixing and tinkering, working on vehicles, hunting, hiking in the mountains, fishing, or going to auctions.
Rob will be remembered as an amazing man, who was dedicated to his family and friends. His quick wit, heart warming smile and down-to-earth spirit will be dearly missed by all who loved him.
Vigil Prayers will be held at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, 901 13 Street SW, Medicine Hat on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, at 7:00 P.M. The Funeral Mass will be held at St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church, 238 – 2nd Ave NE, Medicine Hat on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. Private Interment will follow the Mass at Hillside Cemetery. The Funeral Mass will be live-streamed. It is with profound sadness yet appreciation and pride that we announce the passing of our dad, Leo Volk, at the age of 88 years. He passed away peacefully at the Carmel Hospice of St. Joseph’s Home in Medicine Hat, Alberta, shortly after midnight on the morning of July 3rd, 2025.
Leo is lovingly survived by his children, Donna (Gerald) Wagner, Michelle (Mike) Weisgerber and Craig (Carmen) Volk; grandchildren, Melissa (Andy) Loignon, Nicole (Jay) Schauerte, Grant (Shannon) Wagner, Nick (Jenn) Weisgerber, Danielle Weisgerber (Larson Laing), Monique Weisgerber, Theo Volk, Lowen Volk and Aubrey Volk; and great-grandchildren, Sierra Loignon, Paxton and Kaitlyn Schauerte, Gabrielle and Willa Wagner, Kayleigh and McKinley Laing, and Greyson and Maxwell Weisgerber.
Leo is also survived by his sisters, Rose Pisoni (Italo) and Julie Schafer; in-laws, George Wagner, Jean Wingenbach, Ed Wagner, Victoria Wagner and Armond Bachelu; as well as many nephews and nieces, too numerous to mention.
He is predeceased by his wife of 43 years, Katherine Volk, in 2003; his daughter, Leona Volk, in 2002; his parents, Anton and Elizabeth Volk; and his sister, Emily Anhelher. He was also predeceased by his brothers-in-law, John Anhelher and Peter Schafer; other in-laws, Anne and Ben Hittel, Joe and Trudy Wagner, Tony Wingenbach, Rose and Leon Ebelher, Adolph Wagner, Bert Wagner, and Betty Bachelu.
Leo was born on a farm north of Richmound, Saskatchewan. but was raised on the family farm near Fox Valley. He took over this farm after marrying Katherine Wagner on October 6, 1959. Dad was a true farmer and caretaker of the land. He respected the elements that were out of his control and accepted the outcomes that the Lord provided. With no formal training, he was exceptionally talented at devising solutions and resolving the numerous mechanical problems that arose with any piece of machinery that required attention. Dad served on the RM council of Fox Valley for 20 years and made many meaningful contributions to the area where he lived. He invested hundreds of hours in the construction of the Fox Valley Curling Club and ensured that every detail was completed neatly and carefully. He was also instrumental in establishing the Fox Den Motel, which opened when lodging became an issue during the oil and gas boom in the area. Dad was a patient and successful coach volunteering for his kids’ softball, baseball, and curling teams.
Dad had an incredible talent for woodworking. He thoroughly enjoyed this hobby and created many items that were both functional and beautiful. He spent countless hours in his woodshop on the farm, creating incredible works of art that he would sell to local people in the community. In his later years, he spent his time crafting birdhouses and wooden hot pads, which are treasured by all who received them. He even enlisted the help of his grandkids to help glue and sand these treasures.
After their retirement in 1995, Leo and Kathy moved to Medicine Hat. They truly enjoyed their retirement and life in the big city. Dad enjoyed having a beautiful lawn and a large backyard garden. They were very active in the parish, and Dad could always be seen greeting and ushering people as they entered the church. They loved going for coffee and visiting with friends, family and neighbours. Dad loved to volunteer at the Prairie Gleaners Society, cutting up vegetables to be freeze-dried, packaged, and sent to developing countries to be used in soups.
Dad was always thankful to be surrounded by his family and friends throughout his life. He thoroughly enjoyed these visits, accompanied by a good cup of coffee, a game of Cribbage, and a drink at happy hour. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
The family would like to thank the staff at Margery E. Yuill Cancer Centre, Medicine Hat Hospital and Carmel Hospice at St. Joseph’s home for the excellent care he received.
A Prayer Service will be held at 7:00 pm on Thursday, July 10, 2025, at Saamis Memorial Funeral Chapel, 1 Dunmore Road SE, Medicine Hat, AB. Timothy Koch of Medicine Hat, beloved husband of Marie Koch, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 3, 2025, at the age of 89 years. He also leaves to cherish his memory six children, Audrey (Wilfred) Schneider, Allan Koch, Kelvin (Terese) Koch, Doreen (Ron) Scherger, Clarence (Robynn Carlson) Koch, Laura (Dalton Comm) Koch; twelve grandchildren, Lynda Staples, Leandra Schneider, Jesse Koch, Karlie Koch, Rylie Koch, Marissa Stoik, Jared Koch, Mitchell Koch, Justin Koch, Shantel Ohler, Megan Koch, Hayden Koch; four great grandchildren. He was predeceased parents Simon and Elizabeth Koch; two brothers Ben and Anton Koch. Timothy was born on January 10, 1936, to Simon and Elizabeth Koch. He attended the Seattle Country school north of Fox Valley, Saskatchewan. Timothy took pride in working the farm, attending cattle sales and checking crops. He also enjoyed visiting with family and friends, gardening and playing cards. Thank you to the doctors and nursing staff (4th West) of the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital for their professionalism and care in our time of need. It was greatly appreciated. The family would like to thank the nurses, staff and residents of Masterpiece Southland Meadows for their care and kind words over the past year.
