FRANCES OBRITSCH (NEE DENIS)
FRANCES OBRITSCH (NEE DENIS)
March 10, 1920 – June 29, 2025
It is with much sadness that the family of Frances Obritsch announces her peaceful passing at River Ridge Seniors Village on June 29, 2025 at the age of 105 years.
Frances was born and raised on her parent’s farm, N.E. of Fox Valley, Sask.
Mom had 11 siblings in her family and she was somewhere in the middle of the pack. Frances married Jack Obritsch in 1941 and they farmed 15 miles SE of Fox Valley where they raised their 4 children. In 1974 they moved into the town of Fox Valley. In 2016 Mom celebrated 40 years with the Fox Valley Catholic Women’s League. Just before Mom’s 97th birthday in February 2017 she decided, on her own, to make the daunting move to River Ridge Seniors Village in Medicine Hat. Mom lived a full life but we could see Dementia/Alzheimers was affecting her memory more each day. Her body was getting tired and weaker, her energy was fading, she could not continue. Mom is now an angel among us and she will be dearly missed. We will cherish our memories forever.
Mom was ambitious and also very opinionated, spunky, generous and also displayed sincere kindness and concern for family and others. She especially loved those visits from her grandchildren and always had snacks for them.
She was definitely a perfectionist and took so much pride and pleasure in having a spotless house, clean windows and an immaculate yard. Mom had a high level of energy, a purpose in life and a positive attitude. She was also a very “crafty, talented” person, making mosaic glass pictures, covering antique crocks with ceramic tiles, and making stone inukshuks. She had a creative mind and an inquisitive nature.Mom loved reminiscing and telling those humorous stories about growing up on their farm. There was never a dull moment with 12 children in a family. The “Toronto Blue Jays” and “Saskatchewan Rough Riders” were of course her favourite teams. Mom had never flown in an airplane and lived her entire life in the Fox Valley/Medicine Hat area.
She will be remembered for her love of baking those delicious buns and bread and then sharing it with family and friends. Mom had many delicious meals served at the kitchen table and everyone was always welcome. She will also be remembered for her pickles, growing tomatoes, the great water melon patch, chokecherries, cactus berries and of course her home made wine.
There were many enjoyable card games along with teasing, laughter and a drink or three at the kitchen table with family and friends …. Sometimes till the wee hours of the morning. Our family was so very fortunate that Mom was able to spend so many years in her own house. Remaining in her house with her independence gave Mom a strong enthusiastic zest for life. Frances was predeceased by her parents Conrad Denis in 1973, Lottie Denis in 1986, her husband Jack in 2006, her beloved daughter Rita Glass in 2015, granddaughter-in-law Michelle in 2018, great grandson Kasen in 2009, son-in-law Dmetro in 1995, and 10 of her 11 siblings – Mary (John), Jack (Frances), Walter, Peter (Kay), Tom (Pauline), Margaret (Wendel), Eva (Leo), Gabriel, Joe, Betty (Gene).Frances leaves 3 children to cherish her memory; one son Howard (Rosalee), two daughters, Linda (Dave) and Kathy, her son-in-law Robert Glass, one brother Pius (Doreen) Denis, 11 grandchildren, Ryan, Rulcie (Clarence), Renessa (Mark), Renee (Tyson), Adelle (Tim), Kolton (Cassandra), Colin (Kristin), Kirk, Chad, Raegan, and Nolan, and 19 Great Grandchildren.
The family sends our deepest gratitude to all the great staff, doctors, and nurses at River Ridge Seniors Village in Medicine Hat for all their assistance, caring, support and kindness that was given to Frances. Our family is forever grateful.
Prayers will be held at the St.Mary’s Catholic Church – in Fox Valley Saskatchewan on July 10, 2025 at 7pm with Mass to follow on July 11, 2025 at 11am
Those who wish, in lieu of flowers, may make a donation to the Fox Valley Recreation Board, the Alzheimer’s Society or any Charity of your choice.

WALLACE WUTZKE
WALLACE WUTZKE June 21, 1928 ~ June 29, 2025
Born at home in Norton, Alberta on June 21, 1928, Wallace passed away peacefully with family by his side at Masterpiece Southland Meadows Retirement Residence in Medicine Hat on June 29, 2025, at the age of 97 years.
He is survived by his daughters, Marlene (Larry) Hodinsky of St. Paul, Karen (Kevin) Bjornstad of Spruce Grove, Jeanette (Barry) Brown of Calgary, Janet (Fred) Lawrence of Elk Point, and Susan Gassner (Gary Holland) of Kindersley, Saskatchewan; 18 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; sisters, Jean Maier and Shirley Vossler of Medicine Hat, Alberta.
Wallace was predeceased by his wife, Irene; daughter, Linda Bartee; son, Darryl; sons-in-law, James Bartee and Mark Gassner; step-grandson, Lawrence Bartee; parents, Theodore and Matilda Wutzke; two brothers, Dave (Ruby) and Archie (Emma) Wutzke; sisters, Alice (Bill) Ulrich and Lily (Dave) Stock and brother-in-law, Sam Maier, all from Medicine Hat, Alberta.
Wallace married Irene Young of Medicine Hat on January 8, 1952. After their marriage, they lived in Medicine Hat where Wallace worked at Maser’s Lumber. Several years later, the family purchased a farm near Seven Persons. In 1966, Wallace acquired a family farm in Elk Point where they lived and raised their seven children. Farming was challenging and Wallace often took jobs off the farm to supplement their income, including pipeline work and as a Foreman for the gravel crusher at Bucks Construction in Elk Point. He retired from farming in 1987, and the farm was sold. Subsequently, he moved to Elk Point and became a Foreman of the gravel crusher for the County of St. Paul, a position he held until his retirement in 1994. Wallace and Irene decided to return to their roots in Medicine Hat. While living in Elk Point, he traveled back and forth to Medicine Hat where he stick-built a new home essentially by himself.
Ten years after Irene’s passing in 2002, Wallace was blessed to reside 12 years with his companion, Alma Gutfriend.
He was a hardworking, independent and conscientious worker who tackled any project fearlessly. It was hard to keep up with him, and he never knew when to quit. Despite limited education, Wallace’s achievements were remarkable. His work ethic, energy, and physical abilities continued until his passing and he instilled these traits in his children and grandchildren. Wallace loved fishing and was a competitive fisherman with family and friends year-round. He earned the nickname “Disco Wally” for his love of dancing and at the age of 85 he became an avid bowler.
He was known for his willingness to assist others and share his expertise, despite his busy routine.
The family is grateful for the care that Wallace received for the last seven months from Masterpiece Southland Meadows continuing care facility.
Cremation has been entrusted to Cook Southland Funeral Chapel. A private family celebration will be held at a later date with interment at Pochaiw Cemetery, Stoney Lake. (Condolences may be expressed by visiting our website at

MERI VAN MAARION
MERI VAN MAARION June 5, 1955 ~ June 30, 2025
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Meridith Alice Van Maarion (nee Noyes) on Monday, June 30, 2025, at the age of 70 years. The memory of Mom is cherished by her husband of 50 years, Richard; children, Jesse (Ashley) Van Maarion – Montana, Meadow, and Jasper; Megan (Jared) Wever – Sophia, Mila, and Barent; and Emily (Tim) Erickson – Steele, Ember, and Iver; sister, Kathy Noyes; brother, Jim Noyes as well as many cherished nieces, nephews, extended family and dear friends. Meri was predeceased by her loving parents, Marjorie and Noel Noyes and in-laws, Leonard and Caroline Van Maarion with whom she had a special relationship.
Meri was born on June 5, 1955, in Calgary, grew up on a farm near Innisfail and had a wonderful childhood where she was surrounded by many special family and friends . She lived a life of compassion and kindness, touching the lives of many with her positive outlook on life, wonderful advice and love for others.
She was a teacher in the Medicine Hat School Division for over 30 years where she was a dedicated classroom teacher, school counsellor and Vice-Principal. Meri worked at both Southview and Crestwood Schools where she created many lifelong friendships.
4-H was a part of mom’s life from a child, to a parent volunteer, and now a grandmother. She had a special group of 4-H friends and enjoyed their many get-togethers.
Mom and dad were married 50 years and had an incredible life together. Over the years, they enjoyed skiing, fishing, rock hunting, camping, traveling and spending as much time with the grandkids as they could. Mom wanted to make sure the grandkids also had the same opportunities to love these adventures as well.
After retirement in 2016, mom and dad moved out near Bow Island. Her focus quickly switched from her career to now being a grandmother and homemaker – what she always said she wanted to do and made sure the cookie jar was always full for the grandkids.
In more recent days when Mom did not feel well, Dad was fully devoted in caring for her – she often mentioned, “he sure is a good nurse”. Her positive outlook on life shined through even in some of her hardest days, and she still laughed often.
Mom made everyone in her presence feel like family. The door was always open, the coffee was on and the crib board never collected dust. Mom truly had the most inviting heart and home.
Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, 901 – 13 Street S.W., Medicine Hat on Sunday, July 6, 2025, between 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. A Celebration of Meri’s life will be held at the Cypress Centre, 2055 – 21 Avenue S.E., Medicine Hat on Monday, July 7, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. with David George officiating. HAROLD LOUIS JACKLE
HAROLD LOUIS JACKLE April 18, 1930 ~ June 20, 2025 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Harold Louis Jackle. He slipped away peacefully in his sleep in Medicine Hat, Alberta on June 20, 2025, at the age of 95 years. Born in Maple Creek, Saskatchewan on April 18, 1930, Harold was the second of four children to Louis and Caroline (nee Glass). He was raised on the farmstead at Fox Valley, SK and his upbringing was molded by the hard work that was needed to be done by all to make a farm successful in that area. Although the work was difficult, it was balanced by the realization that there was joy to be found as well. Church activities, community involvement, family gatherings and friendships offset the stresses of creating a successful farming operation. It was at one of the ball tournaments organized by the Church, that he met a beautiful blonde girl from Leader, SK. It is accurate to say that it was love at first sight and Dad married Irene Grace Wenzel on November 30, 1956. They celebrated the birth of Cheryl in 1960, Marlan in 1963 and Ken in 1965. Their love and commitment to each other was constant, steadfast and an inspiration to us all until her passing on September 29, 2021. They were married for nearly 65 years.
Harold is survived by his two sons: Marlan and his three children, Daniel (Tia), Sherene (Nico) and Travis (Robin); and Ken (Phillane) and their two daughters, Tiara and Tenille (Matt). He is also survived by Cheryl’s three sons; Robert (Kirstie) Evans, Marlan (Jenna) Evans and their children, Noah and Charlotte, Michael Evans and Cheryl’s extended family. He also leaves to mourn his two brothers-in-law, Bert (Arlene) Wenzel and Doug (Dorie) Wenzel along with many, many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Harold was predeceased by his beloved wife, Irene; his cherished daughter, Cheryl Triskle (2015); his sister and brother-in-law, Esther and Bruce Martin; his brother, Edwin (Margaret) and his brother, Gordon (Anita). He was also predeceased by his brothers and sisters-in-law, Art Wenzel, Melvin and Ella Wenzel, Reuben and Ellie Wenzel, Merrel Wenzel, Rod (Diane) Wenzel and his sister-in-law, Jean (Max) Brautigam.
He loved and treasured all of these people along with all the friends he gathered on his life’s journey. Family was very important to Dad. Mom and Dad accumulated many friends over the years. Having good times with them was very important for both, especially the celebrated card games with close neighbours, which became a tradition after the farm received an inch of rain. Dad was a true farmer, heart and soul. He lived his life in tune with the weather, the earth and with the Spirit all around him. He was always thankful for the bounty the farm provided, both for our family and for the world.
Dad believed that one should always use their talents to improve the lives of others. Because of this, he offered his service whenever he could. He served as Director of the United Grain Growers Local 574 for 27 consecutive years and as chair for 16 years. He proudly served the R.M. of Fox Valley #171 for 29 years. During this time, he was the Deputy Reeve for 11 years and the Agricultural Councilor for the R.M. for 17 years. He is recognized as the longest serving councilor for the R.M. since its incorporation in 1913. He was the Sub-Unit Director of the Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities for 4 years as well. He organized the first Spring Rate Payers meeting in Fox Valley and then chaired the meetings for the next 16 years; represented the R.M. on the Agriculture Development and Diversification Board; was on the Chinook Regional Library Board and the Maple Creek Union Hospital Board; was a founding member of the first rural snowplow club in the R.M. and was the Director of the Fox Valley Rural Telephone Company until it was taken over by Sasktel. He was active in the 4-H Club and was a Crop Reporter for decades and also served as an Elder and President for the Trinity Lutheran Church in Fox Valley. He loved to sing; was a member of the Golden Prairie Community Choir and was also happy to volunteer at the many events that were held in Fox Valley.
His commitment to community service can only be described as exemplary. He never sought recognition for this service and was greatly humbled to receive the 125th Anniversary of the Confederation of Canada Medal for his service in 1993. When he received this prestigious award, he commented, “every community is made up of a wheel and a hub and I was simply a spoke in the wheel. God’s help from above has helped me carry out this work.”
Perhaps to counter the quietness of an empty nest, Dad developed incredible skills in wheat weaving, willow basket weaving and the making of willow furniture. His wheat weaving skills can only be described as incredible. Examples of his work are in the Canadian embassy in Germany and were in the head offices of both the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool and the United Grain Growers in Regina. He was commissioned by the University of Saskatchewan to create the gifts given to the ten keynote speakers for the 1997 International Symposium on Wheat Genetics. He also won several first place ribbons for wheat weaving and for his wheat sheaves at Agribition in Regina. His teardrop ornaments, stars and other decorations adorn many Christmas trees of his family and friends and his windmills, house blessings, sunbursts and other creations decorate many homes. Some of his favorite memories were of taking his grandchildren to find the perfect grove of willows to cut for his amazing creations or teach them how to weave a basket or take them to the pasture to collect flowers. These are the memories his grandchildren will cherish as well.
Even after his sight, hearing and many of his artistic skills were taken away by his strokes in 2011, he was still able to weave some beautiful decorations and braid innumerable ropes that were either very intricate or incredibly strong. He struggled at first but his innate skill came to the fore and resulted in the many treasured heirlooms and precious gifts that he created after he and Mom moved to Medicine Hat. These items also decorate the many homes where he so generously gave them.
Psalm 81-6: “I relieved his shoulder of the burden, His hands were freed of the basket.
You called in trouble and I reassured you. I answered you in the hiding place of thunder.”
Matthew 11, v 6: “Come to me, all who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
Dad is at peace.
The family would like to thank all the staff at River Ridge Seniors Village for the many years of care and support they gave Dad. He was always thankful for the assistance and friendly help that was always available.
A celebration of Harold’s life will be held at St. Paul Lutheran Lutheran Church,515 Sprague Way S.E., on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Ken Edel officating. Interment will be held at a later date near Fox Valley, SK.

MURIEL MOGCK
MURIEL MOGCK 1943 – 2025
Muriel Mae Mogck of Medicine Hat, beloved wife of the late Melvin Mogck, passed away surrounded by family at Agecare Riverview Home, on Saturday, June 28, 2025, at the age of 82 years. Muriel was born in Three Hills, Alberta on May 29, 1943, to parents Henry and Molly Maerz, who farmed northwest of Three Hills. After moving from the farm into town in 1956, Muriel continued school and was actively involved in Youth and Sunday School at Bethel E.U.B Church and also participated in two 4H clubs, gardening, sewing and learning a lot. Following high school, she graduated from Henderson’s Secretarial School in Calgary and became employed with Gulf Oil until 1969. Muriel always dreamed of having a family, and one day in January 1969 she received a surprise letter in her apartment mailbox from a fellow who lived in Walsh, Alberta (she actually knew where Walsh was because of family trips from Three Hills to Golden Prairie, SK, to see grandparents). Soon to be husband Melvin Mogck, introduced himself, picture included, for the first time and Muriel, who was 25 at the time, naturally returned a letter and also included a picture! Her mother, Molly, had almost given up on her as her mom was married at 23. In April, during a visit to Medicine Hat for an HCC Commencement, the two officially met in person, and had supper at Canada Café, downtown, before they had to head back to Calgary. The rest was history. Their relationship blossomed as Melvin put many miles on his GMC Half Ton, and Muriel drove down to the farm to meet his parents. They were engaged by September and married in Three Hills in November. Some creative matchmaking by some aunts that were friends blossomed into an almost 50-year marriage, two children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. They lived and farmed south of Walsh, Alberta where Muriel enjoyed her big garden, raising chickens, sewing, cooking, baking and being hospitable to all, while still finding time to attend her kid’s music concerts and sports. In 1996 they retired from the farm and moved to Medicine Hat. Muriel was actively involved with their country bible studies, their church as a pianist and Sunday school teacher and a member of the Gideons, and Hat Harmonettes for many years. She also enjoyed bowling league, shuffleboard, and table games with family and friends.
Muriel leaves behind to cherish her memory her two children, Wanda (John) Reinholdt of Hussar, AB, and Dale (Lorinda)Mogck of Medicine Hat, AB; two grandchildren, Corryn Mogck (Christian Patterson) and Jordan Mogck (Brittany Aucoin); two great grandchildren, Kyler Fountain and Kaliah Grandy and her niece Connie (Kelvin) Sadowinski. Besides her loving husband Melvin, Muriel was predeceased by her parents Henry and Molly Maerz as well as her brother Clarence Maerz.
The family would like to give a special thanks to the nurses and staff at Chinook Village, Masterpiece Home, and Agecare Riverview Home for her care over the years.
Those who wish to pay their respects may do so on Sunday, July 6, 2025, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the PATTISON FUNERAL HOME & CELEBRATION OF LIFE CENTRE.
