IRENE HANSON
IRENE HANSON January 21, 1942 ~ March 25, 2025
Irene Hanson passed away suddenly on March 25th while bravely battling cancer. She leaves behind her loving partner, Allen Shedeger; her oldest son, Mike (Sarah) Hanson and grandchildren, Tristan, Jasmine, and Alex (Adam) and Alex’s mom, Dianne; daughter, Melanie (Garth) Knight and grand- children, Derek, Cameron (Callie); daughter, Jackie (Daryl) Schlenker and granddaughter, Emily; and her youngest son, Warren (Kim) Hanson and grandchildren, Taylor and Mackenzie. She is also survived by her brothers, Larry (Mary Ellen) and Glen; sisters, Yvonne, Mavis and Barb along with numerous nieces, nephews and close friends.
Irene was predeceased by her husband, Marvin “Bud” Hanson; mother, Susan Benjamin; brothers, Ken and Lorne; brothers-in-law, Theodore, Rod and Dick as well as sisters-in-law, Myra, Carol, and Joanne.
Born in Gainsborough, Saskatchewan on January 21st, 1942, Irene was the fourth child in a family of eight siblings. She married the boy next door, Bud Hanson, on June 4th, 1960. In February of 1972, they moved to Medicine Hat with their children during the oil boom. Irene was an active member of the Medicine Hat Oil Wives and the Medicine Hat 5-pin Bowlers Association, both as a bowler and YBC coordinator. Her passion for bowling has been passed down to her children and grandchildren.
Eight years ago, Irene met Allen, who became her life partner. Together, they enjoyed watching curling, attending Medicine Hat Mavericks baseball games, square dancing, and having coffee at Tim Hortons. Their favorite pastime was putting together puzzles. Allen was a meaningful part of Irene’s happiness and well-being.
Irene will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved her. The family is deeply grateful for the healthcare provided by the nurses at the Medicine Hat Hospital on 5 East, 2 North and ICU. Special thanks to Dr. David, Dr Ahmed and Dr. Azam for their care and thoughtfulness in treating Irene.

1930 – ELSIE SMITH – 2025
Elsie Christina Smith of Medicine Hat, beloved wife of the late Cliff Smith, passed away peacefully at River Ridge Nursing Home on Sunday, March 23rd, 2025, at the age of 94 years. Left to cherish her memory are her children, Elaine (Randy) Jahnke, Terry (Gayle) Smith, Raymond (Paulette) Smith, (twin) Doug (Crystal) Smith, (twin) Donnie (Dixie) Smith, and Garry (Dawna) Smith; 13 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Elsie was predeceased by her father and mother, Ernest and Minnie Wallin; parents-in-law, James and Alice Smith; sister, Myrtle (Tootie) McIntosh; brothers, Frank Wallin and Norman Wallin; brothers-in-laws, Morrison McIntosh, Reg Smith, Peter Shiels, and Gordon Gilchrist; sisters-in-law, Melva Wallin, Doris Gilchrist, Alice Smith and Irene Shiels; and grandson, Mathew Smith. Elsie was born in Tompkins, Saskatchewan, on June 27, 1930. She was raised in the Painsville District, north of Tompkins, with her three older siblings, Norman, Frank, and Myrtle (Tootie). She met her future husband, Cliff, at a dance at the White Craig School, and they were married April 25, 1951, in Medicine Hat. Elsie and Cliff continued to live on the Smith family homestead, where they operated the family farm and ranch. In 1976, they purchased a ranch in the Mendham district and operated it until 1994, when they retired to Medicine Hat. Family was very important to Elsie. Elsie enjoyed attending family functions and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed bowling, golf, and in colder weather, daily walks around the mall. She loved going to coffee, especially ‘Mendham’ coffee at Zellers, and in later years at the mall. Elsie and Cliff were fortunate to enjoy traveling to many countries, including England, Scotland, Australia, and New Zealand, as well as numerous trips to Cuba. Following Cliff’s passing in July 2017 and Elsie’s onset of dementia, she moved to River Ridge Nursing home, where she remained until her passing. The family of Elsie Smith wish to extend their deep gratitude to the staff of River Ridge for the excellent care they provided to Elsie over the last 8 years. A private family memorial service will be held to celebrate Elsie’s life. LILLIAN TORRIE
1935 ~ LILLIAN TORRIE ~ 2025 Lillian Torrie (nee Ash) passed away in Medicine Hat, Alberta, on March 19, 2025, at the age of 89 years. She is survived by her three children, Elaine Torrie, Doug (Anne) Torrie, and Brenda Smith. She is also lovingly remembered by her grandchildren, Michael (Laura) Fitzhenry, Kevin (Darci) Fitzhenry, Logan (Milissa) Torrie, Lindsey (Clinton) Smith, Sydney (Taylor) Nixon, and Howie (Michelle) Switzer, as well as numerous great and great-great grandchildren. Lillian was predeceased by her husband, Stewart; her parents, Doug and Bea Ash, and her brother, Stewart Ash. Lil’s greatest passion in life was music. She started singing as a small child and continued throughout her life. She performed with several Medicine Hat groups including the Shandelles, the Fifth Avenue United Church choir, Medicine Hat Musical Theatre, the Adele Armstong singers, the Veiner Centre chorus, and the Chinook Village chorus. At parties, she was always ready to strike up a song along with her many friends. More recently, Lil joined a local writers’ club and published a book of her poetry. ROBERT (BOB) ALLAN BURNS It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Robert (Bob) Allan Burns, age 89, on February 4th. He was born and raised in Medicine Hat until his family moved to British Columbia. Bob is predeceased by his wife Rosemary Burns; father James Burns and mother Millicent Keown; sister Helen (John) Belous; brother James (Gertrude) Burns; nephew Chad Graham and first wife Sandra Gunn Burns. He is survived by his children Lori, Roberta (Robert) and Kenn; grandchildren Jesse and Keith; great-grandchild Levi; and cherished nieces and nephews. His family would like to thank the wonderful staff and ‘Dr D’ at Morgan Place (Surrey, BC) for their care of Bob during his last stages of dementia.

PASQUALINA GIASE (NEE ROSSI) 1937 ~ 2025
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Pasqualina Giase (nee Rossi) on March 26, 2025, at the age of 88. She was born in Sant’ Andrea del Garigliano, Frosinone, Italy. She was the youngest of four daughters to Carminella Mazzarella and Domenico Antonio Rossi.
In December 1958, Pasqualina embarked on a new journey, immigrating to Canada with her sister Annita and her two young daughters. A hardworking and determined woman, she built a beautiful life rooted in love, dedication, and family.
Pasqualina had a deep passion for gardening, finding joy and peace in nurturing her plants. She also cherished the outdoors, often spending time camping and fishing alongside her beloved husband of 66 years, Biase Giase.
She is survived by her loving husband Biase and their three children: Rocky (Sharon) Giase of Kelowna, Carmen (Kevin) Thorne, and Caroline (Joe) Greenan of Medicine Hat. She was a proud and devoted grandmother to eight wonderful grandchildren: Charys Giase (Clyf Lieverse), Maria (Derek) Wyman, Sharla (Erik) Hatterscheidt, Josie (Derek) Alyward, Amanda (Chad) Densmore, Adam Thorne, Chris Greenan (Carissa Lippert), and Nick (Holly) Greenan.
Her legacy continues through her eleven great-grandchildren: Anthony Martin, Jacob and Zoe Wyman, Sienna and Archer Hatterscheidt, Jackson and Austin Alyward, Athena and Jasen Densmore, Kyla Thorne, and Forrest Greenan. She is also lovingly remembered by numerous nieces and nephews in Canada, Italy and the United States.
We would also like to thank Dr. Bernard and the loving staff at Meadowlands Optima Retirement Home.
Pasqalina wilI be forever missed by her family, friends, and all those whose lives she touched. Her memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved her.
