BARBARA STUART November 28, 1926 ~ March 21, 2025
Barbara Gladys Stuart (Penna), a beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, passed away peacefully on March 21, 2025, in Medicine Hat, AB at the age of 98 years. Born in Saltash, Cornwall, England on November 28, 1926, she was a woman known for her gentleness, kindness, strength and dedication to family.
Barbara loved music, particularly playing the piano and singing in the church choirs. She loved animals, small and large and particularly enjoyed her time around horses.
Barbara is survived by her children: June Stuart, Pamela Stuart, Deborah (Stuart) Palalia, Lynne (Stuart) Lloyd; grandchildren: Martin Palalia (Tasha), Suzanne (Shane) Taylor (nee Palalia), Lisa (Tommy) Tingle (nee Lloyd) and Jeff Lloyd; great-grandchildren; Noah Taylor, Skye Taylor, Leland Palalia, Wyatt Palalia, Thomas Tingle and Lyla Tingle; brother, Jeff Penna as well as by several nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews in England. She was predeceased by her parents, Fred & Millicent Penna, and her husband, Alan Stuart.
A Memorial Service will be held at United Church of Langley, 21562 Old Yale Rd, Langley, BC., on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, at 1:30 p.m. with light refreshments to follow. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Scott Laroy Viola on March 19, 2025, at the age of 50. Born and raised in Medicine Hat, Alberta, Scott spent his entire life in the community he called home.
Scott was predeceased by his parents, Connie and Laroy Viola. He is lovingly remembered by his son, Angelo Viola (Keira Kish), and Angelo’s mother, Jessica Viola Rauchwarter. He is also survived by his sisters, Tracey Heggie and Tannis Stewart, along with numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Scott had a deep love for the outdoors and found joy in fishing, camping, cooking, gardening, and working on vehicles. However, his greatest passion in life was spending time with his son, Angelo, creating memories that will be cherished forever. Scott will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

March 26th, 1972 March 12th, 2025
Christopher Micheal Gaumont, 52, passed away in the early morning of March 12, 2025.
His passing was unexpected by all who knew, loved and cherished him. Chris is survived by his wife, Stacey Gaumont (Medicine Hat); daughter, Kylie; father, Dennis Gaumont of Picture Butte; brother, Marc Gaumont (Sherri) of Lethbridge; as well as nieces, Brette and Kadi; mother & father-in-law, Nina & Craig Cockburn of Medicine Hat. He also has numerous aunts, uncles, cousins who will think of him lovingly, always. Chris was predeceased by his mother, Rita Gaumont (nee Weisgerber) with whom he had a special bond and friendship.
Chris was known far and wide. With friends literally scattered in small towns across the prairies, he will be remembered as a man whom held strong to traditional values and as a regular guy with a giant heart. His infectious laugh, his unmistakable voice, his extra-large personality and his giving spirit were truly unique to him. He loved his life; fighting for it and his family with his last heartbeat.
A funeral service led by Father Roque will be held in Chris’ honour at Saint Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church in Medicine Hat on Saturday May 31, 2025 at 1pm.

KARL, Timothy

TIMOTHY RYNOLD KARL 1961 ~ 2025 With deep sadness and love, the family of Tim Karl announces his passing on Thursday, March 20, 2025, at Foothills Medical Centre, with his family by his side.
Tim was the beloved husband of Sandy for 41 years; devoted father to Cassy (Phil) and Corbin (Cindy); and proud papa to Lukas and Luna; He is survived by his loving parents Reinhold and Isobel Karl; his older sister Fran Thorson (predeceased by her husband Gerry); nephews Garrett and Craig; niece Amy Caufield (Greg). Younger sister Leslie Anne Larson (Kyle) and nieces Karly (Sarah); Kaylin (Kaden); Justine (George).
Tim dedicated 28 years to farming side by side with his father. Later, he brought that same hard-working spirit to the oil and gas industry where he worked for 16 years. Whether in the field or on the farm, Tim was known for his strong work ethic, steady hands and quiet integrity.
He was also a pillar in his small community, always offering his time and energy to better the lives of those around him. Whether volunteering at the golf course, helping out at the hockey rink, coaching local sports or stepping in to help with whatever needed doing. Tim led with his heart. His contributions to the community were countless.
Nothing brought him more joy than spoiling his kids, grandkids or his buddy Hank. He loved sharing stories and laughs over a game with a pop and chocolate bar.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 1:00 pm, on Saturday, April 19, 2025, at the Foremost Community Hall.
The family is starting an annual scholarship in honour of Tim’s lifelong commitment to community and service. In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to make a donation to the scholarship. Details to follow.

IRENE HANSON

IRENE HANSON January 21, 1942 ~ March 25, 2025
Irene Hanson passed away suddenly on March 25th while bravely battling cancer. She leaves behind her loving partner, Allen Shedeger; her oldest son, Mike (Sarah) Hanson and grandchildren, Tristan, Jasmine, and Alex (Adam) and Alex’s mom, Dianne; daughter, Melanie (Garth) Knight and grand- children, Derek, Cameron (Callie); daughter, Jackie (Daryl) Schlenker and granddaughter, Emily; and her youngest son, Warren (Kim) Hanson and grandchildren, Taylor and Mackenzie. She is also survived by her brothers, Larry (Mary Ellen) and Glen; sisters, Yvonne, Mavis and Barb along with numerous nieces, nephews and close friends.
Irene was predeceased by her husband, Marvin “Bud” Hanson; mother, Susan Benjamin; brothers, Ken and Lorne; brothers-in-law, Theodore, Rod and Dick as well as sisters-in-law, Myra, Carol, and Joanne.
Born in Gainsborough, Saskatchewan on January 21st, 1942, Irene was the fourth child in a family of eight siblings. She married the boy next door, Bud Hanson, on June 4th, 1960. In February of 1972, they moved to Medicine Hat with their children during the oil boom. Irene was an active member of the Medicine Hat Oil Wives and the Medicine Hat 5-pin Bowlers Association, both as a bowler and YBC coordinator. Her passion for bowling has been passed down to her children and grandchildren.
Eight years ago, Irene met Allen, who became her life partner. Together, they enjoyed watching curling, attending Medicine Hat Mavericks baseball games, square dancing, and having coffee at Tim Hortons. Their favorite pastime was putting together puzzles. Allen was a meaningful part of Irene’s happiness and well-being.
Irene will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved her. The family is deeply grateful for the healthcare provided by the nurses at the Medicine Hat Hospital on 5 East, 2 North and ICU. Special thanks to Dr. David, Dr Ahmed and Dr. Azam for their care and thoughtfulness in treating Irene.

1930 – ELSIE SMITH – 2025
Elsie Christina Smith of Medicine Hat, beloved wife of the late Cliff Smith, passed away peacefully at River Ridge Nursing Home on Sunday, March 23rd, 2025, at the age of 94 years. Left to cherish her memory are her children, Elaine (Randy) Jahnke, Terry (Gayle) Smith, Raymond (Paulette) Smith, (twin) Doug (Crystal) Smith, (twin) Donnie (Dixie) Smith, and Garry (Dawna) Smith; 13 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Elsie was predeceased by her father and mother, Ernest and Minnie Wallin; parents-in-law, James and Alice Smith; sister, Myrtle (Tootie) McIntosh; brothers, Frank Wallin and Norman Wallin; brothers-in-laws, Morrison McIntosh, Reg Smith, Peter Shiels, and Gordon Gilchrist; sisters-in-law, Melva Wallin, Doris Gilchrist, Alice Smith and Irene Shiels; and grandson, Mathew Smith. Elsie was born in Tompkins, Saskatchewan, on June 27, 1930. She was raised in the Painsville District, north of Tompkins, with her three older siblings, Norman, Frank, and Myrtle (Tootie). She met her future husband, Cliff, at a dance at the White Craig School, and they were married April 25, 1951, in Medicine Hat. Elsie and Cliff continued to live on the Smith family homestead, where they operated the family farm and ranch. In 1976, they purchased a ranch in the Mendham district and operated it until 1994, when they retired to Medicine Hat. Family was very important to Elsie. Elsie enjoyed attending family functions and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed bowling, golf, and in colder weather, daily walks around the mall. She loved going to coffee, especially ‘Mendham’ coffee at Zellers, and in later years at the mall. Elsie and Cliff were fortunate to enjoy traveling to many countries, including England, Scotland, Australia, and New Zealand, as well as numerous trips to Cuba. Following Cliff’s passing in July 2017 and Elsie’s onset of dementia, she moved to River Ridge Nursing home, where she remained until her passing. The family of Elsie Smith wish to extend their deep gratitude to the staff of River Ridge for the excellent care they provided to Elsie over the last 8 years. A private family memorial service will be held to celebrate Elsie’s life. 1935 ~ LILLIAN TORRIE ~ 2025 Lillian Torrie (nee Ash) passed away in Medicine Hat, Alberta, on March 19, 2025, at the age of 89 years. She is survived by her three children, Elaine Torrie, Doug (Anne) Torrie, and Brenda Smith. She is also lovingly remembered by her grandchildren, Michael (Laura) Fitzhenry, Kevin (Darci) Fitzhenry, Logan (Milissa) Torrie, Lindsey (Clinton) Smith, Sydney (Taylor) Nixon, and Howie (Michelle) Switzer, as well as numerous great and great-great grandchildren. Lillian was predeceased by her husband, Stewart; her parents, Doug and Bea Ash, and her brother, Stewart Ash. Lil’s greatest passion in life was music. She started singing as a small child and continued throughout her life. She performed with several Medicine Hat groups including the Shandelles, the Fifth Avenue United Church choir, Medicine Hat Musical Theatre, the Adele Armstong singers, the Veiner Centre chorus, and the Chinook Village chorus. At parties, she was always ready to strike up a song along with her many friends. More recently, Lil joined a local writers’ club and published a book of her poetry.
