RICHARD MENARD SCHERGER
RICHARD MENARD SCHERGER January 27th, 1947 March 14th, 2025 In Loving Memory of Richard Scherger, a man who never met a person he didn’t like, passed away peacefully at 7AM on March 14th, 2025, at St. Joseph’s Carmel Hospice. Born and raised on the family farm, Richard began working alongside his father at a young age, embodying the values of hard work and dedication that remained with him throughout his life.
On July 18th, 1970, Richard married Violet Brenda Ruff, and together they built a loving home blessed with three children: Kim, Gwen and Aaron (Elisabeth). In 1980, Richard and his family moved back to Leader, where he returned to his roots, farming and enjoying life among dear friends and a close-knit community.
Richard was a man of many talents a farmer, mechanic, and semi driver who approached each role with skill and purpose. His deep faith guided his life, and he remained actively involved in the church, serving mass well into his 70’s.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staff at St. Joseph’s Carmel Hospice for their exceptional care and kindness during Richard’s final days. Their support brought comfort and peace during a challenging time.
Richard’s life was a testament to kindness, faith, and dedication, leaving behind a legacy of love and cherished memories that will forever live in the hearts of all who knew him.

JERRY BISHOP September 28, 1948 ~ March 14, 2025
It is with deep sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Jerry Ronald Bishop on March 14, 2025, at the age of 76 years, with his family by his side. Jerry was born in Medicine Hat and spent his childhood in Etzikom. He completed High School in Medicine Hat and then pursued a successful career, spanning fifty years in Industrial Sales and Management. He was deeply dedicated to community service, including thirty years as a member of the Lions Club of Medicine Hat (President and Zone Chairman), and a member of the Medicine Hat Hockey Hounds and Figure Skating Club. Jerry will be remembered for his quick wit and dry sense of humour and his deep love for his dogs (Bailey and LJ). Jerry enjoyed golfing, taking vacations with his family, and travelling, including to Asia, South America and Europe.
Left to cherish his memory are his former spouse, Pam; his daughters, Laura-Lee, Jo-Anne (Bart) and Jen (Murray) and his grandchildren, Connor, Landon, Kenzie, Kolby, Sebastiaan and Sandrine.
Jerry was predeceased by his parents, Robert and Helen Bishop and his brother, Robbie.
At Jerry’s request, a small celebration of life will be held at a later date with immediate family.
The family wishes to send a heartfelt thank you to the staff at River Ridge Seniors Village for their care and compassion they provided to Jerry.

ERNIE PENNINGTON 1933 – 2025 Ernest “Ernie” James Pennington of Medicine Hat, beloved husband of Donna Westcott, passed away Peacefully, on Thursday, March 13, 2025, at the age of 91 years. He was predeceased by his wife Violet Pennington and leaves to cherish his memory three children, Karen (Jamey) Eslinger, James (Darcy) Pennington, Wayne (Joanne) Pennington; Donna’s children Bill (Carmen) Westcott and Bob (Carol) Westcott; grandchildren Aaron, Dylan, Tyler, Oakley (Michael), Tanner, Colton, Brett, Jenna and Devon; great grandchildren Edward, Lawrence, Keenan and Easton ; one sister Marjorie Debler (predeceased by her husband Fred); Donna’s grandchildren Diandra (Dave) Hay and Kaylin Westcott; Donna’s great grandchildren Arriya and Laya. He was also predeceased by his parents Vera and Jack Pennington. Ernie was born on December 12, 1933, in Medicine Hat where he lived his whole life and enjoyed a 40-year career working for the City of Medicine Hat. The funeral service will be held in THE PATTISON FUNERAL HOME & CELEBRATION OF LIFE CENTRE on Friday, March 21, 2025, at 12:30 p.m. with Life Celebrant David Townsend officiating. FERN MURSCHELL
FERN MURSCHELL 1948 – 2025 Fern Joanne Murschell, beloved wife of Dexter Murschell, passed away suddenly at the age of 76 years on March 10th, 2025.
Fern was born on March 14, 1948, to Emil and Mary Kundert in Medicine Hat, Alberta. She attended New Hilda School and Medicine Hat High School, graduating in 1966. After furthering her education at Medicine Hat Junior College, Fern began teaching at New Hilda School. In 1967, she married her junior-high sweetheart, Dexter. She later worked for Dominion Glass and AGT in Medicine Hat, often fondly recalling the many friendships she formed during that time.
In the early 1980s, Fern transitioned into working for the family business, where she served as a bookkeeper and controller until her passing. Fern had a deep love for music, animals (especially dogs), and playing the piano. She was also an avid sports fan, with curling, baseball, and basketball being her favourites. Those who knew Fern admired her meticulous organization in all areas of her life.
In addition to her many personal and professional responsibilities, Fern was a devoted caregiver to both her mother and her Aunt Lydia Walker for many years.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at the Medicine Hat Hospital ICU for their compassionate care during Fern’s final days.
Fern is survived by her loving husband, Dexter; her son, Troy (Tammy); grandchildren, Dawson (Toni) and Nicolas (Hailey); her brother, Darcy (Heather) Kundert; brother-in-law, Warren (Liz); and nieces, Amy (Gavin) Phinney, Chelsea (Curtis) Anaka, and Dayna (Devon) Oullette. She was predeceased by her parents, her brother Maurice Kundert, her niece Gillian Murschell, and her in-laws, Clara and Max Murschell.
