SHARON CLAY

SHARON CLAY 1943 ~ 2025
Sharon Clay was born in Medicine Hat on December 12, 1943 and passed away on February 13, 2025. She was the only child of Earle and Edith (Townsend) Clay. Growing up in Medicine Hat, Sharon lived most of her childhood years with her parents in the upstairs suite of her grandparents’ home, where she was in frequent contact with her large extended family. Sharon was cherished by her parents and enjoyed a very happy childhood. She fondly remembered many camping trips with her parents, often to Waterton Park. Sadly, her father passed when Sharon was just sixteen years old.
After graduation from Medicine Hat High School. Sharon followed her dreams and attended the University of Calgary where she studied to become a teacher. She then returned to Medicine Hat where she taught primary grades at Webster Niblock Elementary School for 33 years. She was loved and respected by her colleagues and especially by her young students.
During her early years of teaching, Sharon enjoyed travelling with friends and visited many countries. She especially treasured a trip to England with her mother where they connected with relatives.
Sharon was a devoted daughter. She loved and cared for her mother until Edith passed in 2008. Family was important to Sharon and she loved family gatherings with her many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Her faith was equally important. Sharon was a life long member of Westminster United Church where she was very active in the congregation, for many years serving as a trustee.
Sharon was a gifted soprano. For many years she sang with the Adele Armstrong Singers and she was a lifetime member of her church choir. After retirement, Sharon was active with the PEO, the Retired Teachers Association, the “Park Ladies”, and PROBUS. Sharon loved being with people and visiting with friends. She ate most of her lunches at the Veiner Centre unless she was meeting friends elsewhere.
Sharon is survived by her many cousins, her Westminster Church family, her PEO sisterhood, and the many friends who have supported her through her life journey. Thank you to everyone.
A Memorial Service in honour of Sharon’s Life will be held at Westminster United Church, 101 – 6 Street SE, Medicine Hat on Friday, February 28, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. with Margaret McCulley officiating. Those who wish to attend the service virtually via livestream may do so by visiting the Cook Southland website and selecting the View Broadcast button on the homepage at service time.
