BRIAN DODDS

BRIAN DODDS March 4, 1958 ~ February 13, 2025
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved brother and friend, Brian Patrick Dodds. He passed away on Thursday, February 13, 2025, at the age of 66 years. Brian will be dearly missed by his sister, Darlene (Graham) Gillespie; nephew, Colin (Vonnell) and little Frances as well as a niece, Kayleigh (Zach) all from Nanaimo, B.C. Brian was predeceased by his parents, Roy and Margaret Dodds as well as his twin brother, Gary, in infancy. Brian has two special uncles and aunts, Harold and Grace Phillips and Joe and Doreen Phillips from Medicine Hat as well as many cousins and friends that he held dear.
Brian was born in the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital, coming into this world unexpectedly on March 4th, 1958, six weeks pre-mature and weighing only 3 lbs. He was raised in The Flats and then in Crestwood in the two family homes there. He attended Elm Street Elementary and Alexandria Junior High School (special education). Brian left school at sixteen to join his parent’s business, Dodds Plumbing & Gas Fitting Ltd as an apprentice. He worked in this job for ten years until the business closed due to his father’s illness. Brian went on to work in local restaurants and in landscaping. He happily joined the Venturers group at Cypress Hills Provincial Park where he worked in park main-tenance for close to 20 years until his retirement in 2022. Brian lived independently for many years with the support of the CORE Association who advocated for Brian, helping him with daily living skills, attending medical appointments, recreational and social activities. We are indebted to them for supporting Brian for over 16 years. When Brian was unable to continue living on his own due to health issues, he moved into Meadow Ridge Seniors Village where he enjoyed life for the last 3.5 years.
Wherever Brian went he made friends and always had time for a chat or coffee, always wishing everyone to “Have a Good Day”. He especially enjoyed being outdoors, working with the Venturers team at Elkwater, fishing, gardening, playing bocce and horseshoes. In winter, Brian avidly followed the Medicine Hat Tigers hockey team, having season tickets for many years or listening to the radio broadcasts. He enjoyed building model cars, Word Search puzzles and playing cards, shuffleboard and pool with his many friends at Meadow Ridge. Brian was especially proud of his participation in the Special Olympics World Qualifying Bocce tournament that was held in Medicine Hat in 2022.
The family thanks the nurses, staff and Dr. Malmburg at Meadow Ridge for their care of Brian and Dr. Cloete, Dr. Majeed and the nurses on 4W in the Medicine Hat Hospital. The family is very grateful for his wonderful CORE support team, especially team leader, Linda Patrick and his worker, Jane Simpson.
A Celebration of Life for Brian will be held at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, 901 – 13 Street S.W., Medicine Hat on Saturday, February 22, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Murray Jaster officiating. Private Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery. If friends so desire, tributes in memory of Brian may be made to the CORE Association, 412 – 3 Street S.E., Medicine Hat, Alberta, T1A 0H1.
