EVACK, JACQUELINE M.
EVACK, JACQUELINE M. 1939 – 2024
We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our beloved mother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend, Jacqueline Evack (nee Pierson), in Calgary, AB, on Sunday, September 29, 2024.
Jackie was born in Taber, AB, in 1939, the eldest daughter of Jack and Margaret. In 1953, the family relocated to Medicine Hat and Jackie transferred to Medicine Hat High School, where she would meet her future husband Steve Evack, and later graduate high school (Class of ’57).
Jackie began her career at TD Bank shortly after graduation and remained there for over 20 years through moves to Edmonton and Calgary. She later joined the Alberta Treasury Branches, working there until her retirement in 1997. Jackie found great fulfillment in her work, and her dedication and professionalism led her to become TD’s second female bank manager in Alberta in 1976.
Jackie enjoyed travelling throughout her life, and travelled extensively throughout Europe, visiting France, Germany, Italy, Ireland, the Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, the UK, and Ukraine, as well as many Canadian and US destinations with her husband, daughter, son-in-law, sister, and friends. During retirement she kept busy by visiting her many friends, learning new hobbies, and staying active in golf and curling leagues. She contributed to the community by volunteering at the Foothills Medical Centre (for over 20 years), Heritage Park, and the Brier Curling Cup.
Jackie cherished her family and friends and delighted in staying connected to everyone in her orbit, across generations and geography. She took great joy in hosting and getting together, whether large celebrations or intimate coffee dates.
Jackie was predeceased by her husband, Steve; her son, Stephen Jonathan; her parents and in-laws; her sister, Sandy; her aunties and uncles, Ruby, Claude, Mary, Jean, Isabelle, and Sandy; as well as her cousins, Robert and Reg. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Flurin Giovanoli; her sister and brother-in-law, Jean and Ron Miller; nieces, Heather Tucker (Dan) and Erin Miller; her grandnephews, Jesse, Luke, William, and Alexander; as well as many cousins and friends.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks to the dedicated nurses and staff of Units 41 and 42 at the Foothills Medical Centre, as well as Drs. Ricki, Sabourin and Chacko. Our deepest gratitude goes to the incredible Agapé Hospice team, nurses, staff, and Drs. Meshesha (FMC) and Ahamed, whose compassion and care brought comfort and dignity to Jackie in her final days. Your kindness will never be forgotten.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests memorial tributes be made directly to the Agapé Hospice, 1302 – 8 Avenue N.W., Calgary, AB T2N 1B8 Telephone: (403) 282-6588, or to the Rosedale Hospice #1245 70 Avenue S.E., Calgary, AB T2H 2X8 Telephone: (403) 284 5195.

SHANNON HAUSAUER
SHANNON HAUSAUER 1955 2025
I never want anyone to say I died peacefully. Whether I did or didn’t, in my heart and soul, I was screaming and kicking until the end. No-one wants to die. But, knowing I have left a legacy for my children and grandchildren to enjoy what life has to offer, I am at peace.
I was born Shannon Mary-Jane Stark in North Bay, ON, 11 April 1955 to Phyllis and Gerry Stark. They found my first name on the roof of a barn in Callander, ON. Dad was RCAF when he and Mom met in Portage La Prairie. They married in January 1954 and began a life together that spanned 46 years until Dad’s passing. Numerous moves throughout that time brought them back to where they began.
I didn’t get it right the first time (but I birthed four bright and beautiful children), however, my life has ended while married to the sweetest, most caring man. We didn’t always see eye to eye on whose turn it was in the kitchen (takeout), American politics or COVID-19, but Keith was my steadfast supporter through the loss of my Mom, close friends, and both the joy and the disappointments that family can sometimes bring. Caring for me throughout my own battle with cancer, he has never faltered. No matter what I needed.
They say your whole life is based on one choice. The choice I made led me to Huronia Regional Centre for 15 years, where I made many friends. Some of those friends disappeared out of loyalty to another. Not one to stand for my true friends being constantly quizzed over my life, I left Community and Social Services.
The move to Corrections became the best decision I had ever made. Surrounded by bright, funny, trustworthy people with solid advice, it was easy to earn and build trust with those on both sides of the bars. My Barrie Jail family held, and still holds, the most memorable of events both on and off duty. Barrie Jail reunions were always well attended and my mantra was, “If I can make even a small difference in somebody’s life, I’m doing my job well”. Mutual respect and a positive attitude made 20 years fly by. Along the way, I became a Crisis Negotiator, First (and Only) Female Admitting and Discharge Officer in the history of the Barrie Jail, an original Escort Officer, a proud member of the Ceremonial Unit, and a Staff Trainer. Mike, Trish, Billy and Cathy and very close Barrie Skeletons in my closet and Sturn, Bob, Sandy, Tara and Marnie are my Kenora Bones.
Along the way, I became involved with Cops for Cancer, Citizens on Patrol, Lake of the Woods Search and Rescue, and St. John Ambulance. Meeting and making new friends was always rewarding.
My friendship with Heather Mills has lasted over 40 years and thousands of miles. The sister I never had, she has long been my rock, especially while I looked after Mom the last three months of her life. With Keith’s support, Mom’s close friends, Heather, a few cigarettes, and Apple Orchard Cider, I was able to maintain the positive and supportive role Mom needed.
I have been pre-deceased by my parents, Gerry and Phyllis Stark; and my in-laws, Pamela “Mummy” and “The Donald” Hausauer. I am survived by my most loved husband and caretaker (no easy feat), Keith Hausauer; my very loved children and grandchildren, Lisa, Sturn and Liljá and Thor Vigfusson; Mark, Ruth, Aiden and Ariana Mary-Jane Leef; Lindsay, Adrian, Taylor and Odin Thomas; Kevin and Breanna Leef; Keith’s son, Bill (Kristina) Hausauer; and his brother, Ken (Colleen) Hausauer. I could not have asked for a more loving relationship with each.
Keith and I owe a huge thank you to the Margery E. Yuill Cancer Centre, an amazing group of people who make the phrase “Cancer Centre” worthy of its title. Thank you to Dr. Amina Taleb, the Community Paramedics, Franz and the Palliative Care Team and all those who greeted me with cheerful attitudes at each and every appointment. Dr. M. Venter, Chelisa and Kathryn worked very hard to take care of pain management, for which I am very grateful.
My friends and family and reflections of my legacy. My life has been enriched by not only the impact I had on people and places, but the impact they have had on mine. My precious companions, Pepper, Loki, Misty Blue and Isabella Rose are in safe hands with Keith’s unwavering devotion.
Emily Dickinson wrote, “Dying is a wild night and a new road”. A road I must now travel alone, but forget me not, as I will not forget you.

MARVIN PHAFF
1929 MARVIN PHAFF – 2025
Marvin Phaff passed away peacefully on February 3, 2025, in Medicine Hat at the age of 95 years. He was born on July 20, 1929, at the Anhorn home in Medicine Hat, AB; the only one in the family born in that province. Marvin was the third child of John and Florence (Stahl) Phaff. He grew up in Hatton, Saskatchewan, where he received his education at the Hatton School and learned how to farm and ranch. His ranching years began when he partnered with his dad, John, in 1951. They bought 20 cows and the J.M. Wilson place. John retired in 1965. Marvin met Elaine Walbauer in Medicine Hat and they married on December 26, 1951. They built a small house on the property, but because they could not obtain water, they moved the house 1/2 mile north of Hatton, where there was ample water and a suitable location for ranching. It was named Blue Sage Ranch. In the early seventies, Marvin and Elaine had a new house built and the old one was used for hired help. Marvin grew mostly crested wheatgrass on the sandy soil of Hatton. The seed was combined and hauled by semi-loads to Barons, Alberta, to the seed cleaning plant, about a four-hour drive. The seed was left to be cleaned and bagged and then picked up on a return trip or sold from the plant. Marvin also raised mostly Charolais cattle. Marvin and Elaine moved to Medicine Hat in 1986 when Rod & Shawna purchased the farm. Marvin couldn’t sit still for long, so he renovated apartment suites. He continued this until he decided to get back into farming and purchased some irrigation land off the Holsom Road. For a while, he drove back and forth to the farm from their house in Medicine Hat but then decided to build a home on the farm, which he mainly did all on his own.
Elaine passed away in June 2009. In August 2010, Marvin married Janet. A couple of years later, he sold the farm and bought a house in Medicine Hat and officially retired at age 83. Marvin enjoyed bowling, playing cards, visiting, working in his yard, volunteering at the Prairie Gleaners, and attending church.
Marvin is survived by his second wife, Janet. He leaves to cherish his memory three children, son, Brent (Sandra) Phaff of Hatton and their children, Kyle from Hatton and Chelsey (Darren), who live near Walsh, Alberta; daughter, Wendy Stewart (Matthew) from Red Deer and her children, Brandy (Brent) Campbell and their daughter, Palmer from Medicine Hat and Wendy’s son, Dallas (Ashley) Bollinger from Medicine Hat; son, Rod (Shawna) Phaff of Dunmore and their children, Quincy (Madi) Phaff from Victoria, BC and daughter, Amelia Phaff from Medicine Hat; two sisters, Yvonne Turcotte and Doreen Meidinger; brother, Clinton (Betty) Phaff; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Marvin was predeceased by his son, Gregory, in infancy in 1966; wife, Elaine, in 2009; parents, John & Florence; brother, Reg; sister, Laura; as well as sisters and brothers-in-law. Marvin lived in his own home until the day before his passing. He will be remembered as a kind, generous, hard-working man who never complained. He was a man of strong but quiet faith, and his family and friends deeply miss him. Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at Saamis Memorial Funeral Chapel, 1 Dunmore Road SE, Medicine Hat, AB, on Sunday, February 9th, 2025, from 7:00 to 9:00 pm. The Funeral Service will be held at Saamis Memorial Funeral Chapel, 1 Dunmore Road SE, Medicine Hat, AB, on Monday, February 10th, 2025, at 1:00 pm with Pastor Shane Hein officiating. If unable to attend, family and friends are welcome to participate via live stream by logging on to
