It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Valerie “Joyce” Quast, who departed this world peacefully on February 4, 2025, in her beloved hometown of Medicine Hat, Alberta at the age of 91 years. Joyce was born on March 24, 1933, to the loving parents, Stanley and Grace Dowling. She lived a remarkable life that spanned nearly 92 wonderful years, filled with love, joy, and countless memories that will forever be cherished by those who knew her. Joyce was a beacon of kindness and generosity, traits that endeared her to all who crossed her path. She was known for her feisty spirit and unwavering zest for life, saying, “I have lived a good life.” Her presence inspired many, and she touched the hearts of her family and friends with her warmth and compassion. Joyce, Ray, and Ross resided in California for over 45 years before her returning to Medicine Hat in 2018. Throughout her life, Joyce pursued a dedicated career as an administrative clerk before enjoying her well-deserved retirement. Her commitment to her work mirrored her dedication to her family and community. She was a cherished member of the UKE Crew and an active participant in her church. Joyce was a woman of many passions. She loved dancing, particularly as an avid square dancer, and her enthusiasm for music was boundless. Whether playing, singing, or attending concerts, Joyce found joy in every musical note. She also delighted in helping with coffee parties and potlucks at her condominium and with her church community, bringing people together with her vibrant spirit and infectious laughter. Joyce was preceded in death by her beloved spouse, Raymond Quast; her son, Ross Quast, and daughter-in-law, Loretta Quast; her brother, Ronald (Marie) Dowling; and her devoted parents, Stanley and Grace Dowling. She is survived by many family members and friends, who will remember her fondly for her warmth, her stories, and the many lessons she imparted to them throughout their lives. EVACK, JACQUELINE M. 1939 – 2024 We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our beloved mother, sister, aunt, and cousin, Jackie Evack (nee Pierson), in Calgary, AB, on Sunday, September 29, 2024.
Jackie was born in Taber, AB, in 1939 and relocated to Medicine Hat with her family in 1953, where she graduated high school in 1957. Jackie began her career at the TD Bank shortly after graduation and remained there for over 20 years through moves to Edmonton and Calgary. She later joined the Alberta Treasury Branches, where she worked until her retirement in 1997. She enjoyed travel, golfing, curling, volunteering and gathering with friends and family.
A Celebration of Jackie’s life will be held in September 2025.

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Carla Lerner, a beloved wife, mother, nana, sister, and friend, who left us peacefully on February 4, 2025. Born on March 15, 1952, in Medicine Hat, Carla’s life was defined by her unwavering love for her family, her bravery in the face of adversity, and her boundless kindness to those around her. Carla’s early years were spent in the nurturing embrace of her parents, Emil and Rosie Kruger, who instilled in her the values of compassion and strength. She is preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Robert. Carla is survived by her beloved husband of 52 years, David, who stood by her side through every challenge and triumph. Together, they created a warm, loving home. She was a proud mother to her sons, Mark (Aeron) and Kelly (Theresa), and her daughter, Melissa. Carla found immense joy in being a nana to her three grandchildren; Ashton, Tyson, and Mila, whose bright smiles and laughter filled her heart with happiness and pride. Carla is lovingly remembered by her brothers, Gordon Kruger and Gerald Kruger, her sister, Marilyn Edwards, as well as numerous nieces and nephews, who cherished their time with her. Her legacy of love will continue through them. Carla worked diligently in her early career, beginning with a brief tenure at B.A.T.U.S. before dedicating her efforts to the personnel office at CFB Suffield from 1972 to 1976. Carla was devoted to her family and actively contributed to her community. Since 1972, she has been a cherished member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, where she served as a Sunday School teacher and Superintendent. Her commitment extended further as she served on the Board of Education and Cradle/Nursing Roll. In her leisure time, Carla enjoyed gardening, reading, and camping activities that allowed her to connect with nature and her loved ones. She was known for her bravery and strength, which shone through as she fought valiantly against her illness. Those who knew her witnessed her incredible spirit and resilience, which inspired all around her. A Remembrance and Celebration of Carla’s Life will be held on Saturday February 8, 2025, at 1:00 PM at St. Peter Lutheran Church, 758 8th Street SE, Medicine Hat with Pastor Shane Hein officiating. All are welcome to join in honouring her memory and the indelible mark she left on all of us. FRANK GUCKERT 1933 ~ 2025 Frank Kasper Guckert of Medicine Hat, beloved husband of the late Eleanor Guckert, passed away on Tuesday, January 28, 2025, at the age of 91 years. He leaves to cherish his memory three children, Lyle (Lorraine) Guckert of Oyen, Lorie (Tim) Lerner of Medicine Hat and Lana (Corey) Gunther of Calgary; six grandchildren and six great grandchildren, Mark Guckert (Beth Norris) (Leif and Ivan), Kristal Dubois (Jason Allemann), Nolan (Kaylee) Lerner (Leighton and Maddex), Chantel (Jamie) Goldring (Freya and Rowan), Olivia Gunther and Natalya Gunther; two brothers, Mike Guckert and Albert (Doreen) Steinbach; one sister, Josie Fitterer, and sister-in-law, Marlene Parfenuik as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Besides his wife Eleanor (August 9, 2019), he was predeceased by his parents John and Martha Guckert, four brothers, Michael, Leo, Anton and Peter Guckert.
