JOYCE MCQUEEN

JOYCE MCQUEEN June 22, 1926 – October 26, 2024
Joyce passed away peacefully at the age of 98 at the Brentwood Care home in Calgary AB.
She was loved and appreciated by all she came in contact with during her long life including friends and people who cared for her at Brentwood.
Joyce was born in Medicine Hat. She lived in Calgary the last 12 years but always called Medicine Hat home and longed to return. She is predeceased by her husband Gordon in 2016 and 2 sisters Velva Moser and Chrissie Rose.
Joyce was active in St. John’s Presbyterian Church. She was a part of the Women’s Guild. She enjoyed the camaraderie and made lifelong friends with a group of ladies. They called themselves the Merry Milers and you could find them out walking every Thursday morning and enjoying their time together as friends do. In her later years we would read her the weekly sermons which she really appreciated
She also enjoyed her time with the Calorie Counters group attending weekly meetings and attending conferences throughout Alberta.
Bowling and curling were also favorite past times.
Joyce worked in retail on and off throughout her life. First as a young woman in Eaton’s, then while raising her family and finally at the Bay where she retired.
There were many fond memories of camping trips to Elkwater (most summer weekends) and camping vacations throughout Alberta, BC, Montana, Washington and Wyoming.
Mom always said her greatest accomplishment was raising her 5 children Patricia (Jorge), Ian (Janis), Devora (Mick) and twins Karen (predeceased Victor) and Kay (Rory). This family has grown to 8 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. She will be missed by all of us. Love you Mom!

BETTY ANN BERT 1951 ~ 2024 It is with heavy hearts that the family of Betty Ann Bert announce her passing at St. Joseph’s Home – Carmel Hospice in Medicine Hat on Sunday, November 3, 2024, at the age of 73 years. Her loving memory will forever be cherished by her husband, Roy; son, Royce (Leesa) Bert and their children, Deegan and Keyana; daughter, Candice (Steve) Schaufele and their children, Gavyn, Taye, Lynden and Kelyn; mother, Irma Springer; sisters, Dona, Leona and Linda as well as their families. She was predeceased by her father, Walter Springer. Betty Ann was born in Empress, Alberta on October 7, 1951. She married Fitzroy ‘Roy’ Bert on August 12, 1978. Throughout her life, she always put family first, especially when it came to supporting her children and grandchildren in all of their endevours. Betty Ann’s successes in business came with long hours and hard work, having owned and operated Broadway Beauty and Tanning Salon for over 50 years. Mel “Bill” Campbell, beloved husband of Sharon McDonald-Campbell, of Calgary, AB, passed away on Monday, November 4, 2024, at the age of 72 years.
Mel was born in Medicine Hat, AB, on December 16, 1951, and moved to Calgary, AB, in 1989. Mel retired in 2010, after 35 years as a Paramedic in both Medicine Hat and Calgary. He was particularly proud of his achievements during his career in EMS.
Besides his loving wife Sharon, Mel is survived by his daughter Melissa, son Matthew (Sally), granddaughter Madison, and grandson Jacob. He is also survived by his mother Annetta Lozo, brothers, Robert (Shelley) and Michael (Rose); sisters, Lorna, Ellen (Dan), and Kathleen (Nic); stepsons, Robert McDonald (Troy Lacher) and Roger (Veronica) McDonald; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and step-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his daughter Megan (1976) and father William (1985).
Mel would like to share a special thank you to his wife, Sharon, “the most loving and supportive person I have known” and to his mother, “for always being there for me.”
Thank you to Dr. Doug Helmerson, Dr. Mitesh Thakrar, and Kelly Chabot, R.N. of Alberta Transplant Program for their excellent care and support following a double lung transplant on February 5, 2008. 1939 – ALICE FISCHER – 2024 It is with great sadness that we share the loss of our dear mother and grandmother. Alice passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 30th, 2024, in Calgary. Alice leaves to mourn her two sons; Stuart (Luisa) and Steven (Antoine); as well as her beloved grandsons, Benjamin and Matthew. She is also survived by her son’s father, Norman; her sister, Anne Durr; and numerous nieces and nephews. Alice was predeceased by her parents, Jacob and Eva Fischer, as well as six brothers and three sisters. She was a proud woman and worked hard throughout her life, from the farm to the city. Her boys were her life, and she lived every day to make sure they had what they needed. She was incredibly proud of them and their families. She loved to cook, and no one ever went away hungry, even after a short visit. Holidays were always special sewing Halloween costumes, decorating the house for Christmas, preparing a special feast, and ensuring every birthday was celebrated appropriately. She also loved music whether singing around a campfire, playing her organ or records, and of course, singing with her brothers and sisters in the early years. MILDRED KOSOLOFSKI 1934 ~ 2024 Mildred Kosolofski, beloved mother, grandmother, mother-in-law and friend, passed away peacefully on November 7, 2024. She was born in Birsay, Saskatchewan, to Gustav and Maria Kusisto, who instilled in her the values of hard work and resilience that she carried throughout her life. Mildred was a woman of remarkable spirit, characterized by her feisty nature and a deep appreciation for her alone time. While she cherished moments of solitude, she also flourished in the company of family and friends. In 1960 she married John at which time she left her nursing career to stay home to raise their children. Mildred discovered a passion for golf, taking up the sport at the age of 65. With determination and skill, she achieved two remarkable holes-in-one. These accomplishments brought her immense joy and became a cherished topic of conversation among her loved ones. Mildred is preceded in death by her loving husband, John Kosolofski, and her siblings, Laurie (in infancy), Wayne, Roy, and Ruth. She leaves behind a legacy of love and strength, survived by her sons, Adrian and Aaron, and her daughters, Lola (Clare), Nadine (Kasey), Delilah (Drew), and Delinda (Travis). Her family continued to grow with the addition of grandchildren, Katherine, Michael (Alissa), Megan (Tyler), Avery (Brennan), Arielle (John), Desiree (Nick), Andrea, Paige, Jazmin (Andrew), Aspen (Greg), Skylar (Jaren), and Salme, along with her precious great-grandchildren, Isadora, Emmett, Charlotte, Camille, Raiya, Dylann, Guage, Hudson, Reyda, J-Cee, Atlas, Nixon, and Kruz, as well as her numerous nieces and nephews. Doug passed away on November 2, 2024, at the age of 85 years. Doug was a devoted husband to his late wife, Gloria Picken, with whom he shared a beautiful life for 63 years. Doug is survived by his children, Bruce Picken, Sandy (Mel) Brabrant, and Deb Picken; grandchildren, Mark Picken (Amber) and Christine Hilsendeger, as well as his cherished great-grandchildren, Cade, Lacey, and Rowan; as well as his brothers, Stanley and Herb, and his sister, Thelma. Doug was predeceased by his wife, Gloria; and his parents, Robert and Phoebe Picken. Doug was also a dedicated entrepreneur. He owned and operated Fred’s Auto Wreckers/The Hubcap Place for over 45 years. His work ethic and commitment to excellence were evident in everything he did, earning him the respect and admiration of colleagues and customers alike. In addition to his professional accomplishments, Doug had a passion for the outdoors, enjoying hunting, fishing, camping, and skidooing. He loved stock car racing and reveled in the thrill of competition, winning several championships that showcased his skill and determination. His absence will be profoundly felt by all who knew him, but his memory will forever remain in our hearts. Doug will be missed and remembered without a formal service. It is with profound sadness that the family of David Francis Prawdzik announces his passing on November 5, 2024. Dad’s memory will be held by the hearts of all those who loved him, and his legacy will live on for generations because of every single story and lesson he shared with those he loved. Dad’s everlasting love will be cherished by his children, Kim (Jim) Schmidt, Dawn Prawdzik, Walter Prawdzik, and daughter-in-law, Beverly Prawdzik. Dad was many things to many people. Nothing was more important to him than his grandchildren, Travis, Ryan (Kerri) Unger, Tara (Doug) Maerz, Alicia Schmidt (Chris), Brittany Schmidt, Micheal Prawdzik, Tabitha (Jeff), Mckenzie (Brendan), Robert (Shelby), Thomas (Ava) Davey, Mallory (Tanner) Cook, Walter JR. (Samantha), Grace, Noah Prawdzik, Jenny (Barry) Steinhubl; “Great” Grandfather of Brandon, Devon, Cole, Taylor, Finlay, Hunter, Vaetta, Gage, Ridley, Brooks, Huxley, Weston, Maren, Oaklynn, Indie, Walter IV, Olivia, Liam; and a Great-Great grandpa to Dion. Dad also leaves his brothers, Danny and Reggie, and sister, Gail, and their families to remember him. Dad’s worldly sorrows were found in the loss of his sons, David Junior, Jimmy, and Jamie Prawdzik; his grandson, James Schmidt; his parents, Walter and Agnes Prawdzik; and his sisters, Dorothy, Phylis, and Clarice, who all predeceased him. Dad was born in the municipality of Polonia, Manitoba on August 15, 1935. His deep-seated love for the farm life was something that Dad carried with him all of his life. As a young man, Dad enlisted in the Air Force. Shortly after the Air Force, he met the mother of his children and married Elizabeth Pow. Dad moved to Medicine Hat in 1970, and as a butcher by trade, he found work at the Beef Plant on Highway 41A. Dad was a sociable person; he loved to play crib and “shoot the breeze” and he made many lifelong friends, some of whom would convince him to take a chance and go work on the oil rigs. Dad loved to travel, and on Holidays and long weekends, endless trips were made back to Brandon for family gatherings and enjoying his mom’s home-cooked meals. Dad retired in 2000, and he enjoyed his retirement by gardening three of his acres in the summer, defying the prairie by growing trees, and lots of camping and traveling with his sons, daughters, families, and grandchildren to the US and BC. Dad was very proud of his children’s and grandchildren’s accomplishments. Wherever Grandpa was, there was likely always to be a grandchild or children in tow. DQ was a frequent stop, and he enjoyed watching his grandchildren’s sports and other events. It would be remiss not to acknowledge what we could all debate if Grandpa’s German Shepherd was “Shep” the 10th or Shep the 14th, for he always had a Shepherd called “Shep”, since Winnipeg and even up until this past August. He will never be forgotten and will be sadly missed always. LES COSTEA 1956 – 2024 Les Daniel Costea of Medicine Hat, passed away on Wednesday, November 6, 2024, at the age of 68 years following a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. He leaves to cherish his memory two sons, Justin Costea and Jordan (Ashton) Costea; his granddaughter Maddyx Costea and grandson Maverick Costea; Les’ partner Terry Gardner as well as his parents Susan and George Costea and his oldest brother Phil. Les was predeceased by his wife Lynn Costea on August 25, 2010. Born in Regina, Saskatchewan on September 27, 1956 and attended McCoy High School in Medicine Hat. His career path led him to Kulpe Carpet where he became the manager and then eventually moving to Carpet One. Les was a natural athlete excelling at volleyball and basketball. He also played touch football for the Bobcats sharing Quarterback duties with Kelly Hrudey, a highlight of his football years. Les was a big car enthusiast enjoying this hobby for many years.
