OSADCZUK

OSADCZUK Joann Lydia Osadczuk of Brooks, passed away on October 1, 2024, in Medicine Hat, from pneumonia, with her loving husband Jack, son Jim and daughter Janice by her side. Joann was born on March 7, 1944, in Brooks to Ester and George Hansen. She attended school in Brooks, until she found and married the love of her life, Jack Osadczuk on April 8, 1961. Jack and Joann made Iddesleigh their home for the first few years, until they bought their first chunk of land south of Jenner. They farmed and ranched for almost 60 years, before they semiretired and moved to an acreage just outside Brooks, where they currently reside. Joann was a hard worker all her life and wasn’t afraid of a new challenge! Her skill set ranged from planting to harvest, calving to weaning, as well as being a wife and mother. Joann gave birth to their son Jim on September 28, 1961, followed by their daughter on July 7, 1963. Joann and Jack shared work, love and play including the only married couple to be in 4-H showing calves. She was actively involved in or with any community function and lent a helping hand to whatever or whomever needed her. Joann and Jack were avid curlers and better bonspielers, winning their share. They traveled the world all their lives. They made it to every destination that they planned except Australia and New Zealand, before age made that too large of a task. Their second home was in Maricopa, Arizona, where they wintered a number of years. Joann is survived by her husband Jack; son Jim and family; daughter Janice and family, and last but not least, her baby Trixie and grand dogs Sassy, Cali, and Romeo. She cherished numerous nieces and nephews, close friends, in-laws and outlaws, and people that are more family than friends! Joann was predeceased by her father George Hansen, mother Ester Christman, stepfather Clifford Christman, brother Bill Hansen, mother-in-law Mary Osadczuk, father-in-law Mike Osadczuk and great-granddaughter Emma Hoffman. Funeral services will be held at the Iddesleigh Cemetery at 11:00 am on Friday October 11, 2024 with a Celebration of Life to follow at the Jenner Hockey Arena. Rev. John Theiss officiating.

She is also survived by her brothers Jake Koch and Mike (Shirley) Koch; sister Clara Krassman; in-laws Lena Eresman, Susan (George) Costea, Leonard Miller, Loretta Miller and Violet Fisher.Besides Frank, her husband of sixty five years, she was predeceased by her parents Simon and Celestina Koch; sister Agnes (Del) Plaxton; brothers Cecil (Lena) Koch and Matt Koch; in-laws Frank and Florentine Miller (née Ressler), Alex Krassman, John (Tilley) Miller, Jack (Betty) Miller, David (Catherine) Miller, Valentine (Clara) Miller, Edwin Fisher and Christina (Frank) Resch.Elizabeth was born August 24, 1930 in Fox Valley, Saskatchewan. Growing up on a farm in Saskatchewan during the thirties was anything but easy. She had to help with whatever she could around the farm, especially making sure the horses had water. Betty would tell stories of dust storms and how cold Saskatchewan was in the middle of winter. She remembered waking up in the middle of the night to find all the water in the house frozen. Her first paying job was cleaning the school before the school year started. In her final year of school, she was in charge of starting the fire in the winter, which meant she had to go in early. Once she was finished school, Betty continued working around the farm until one day she decided she wanted a watch. In order to save up for that watch (which still works to this day), she went to Taber to work the beets with her dad and brother Matt. One Sunday evening, Betty met Frank at a mutual friends’ house, possibly having met him once before. After the beet season, Betty returned to Fox Valley and they started letter correspondence. On Christmas 1948, Frank showed up at Fox Valley with an engagement ring. They were married July 11, 1949. The first five years of marriage Frank and Betty lived all over southern Alberta, eventually settling down in Vauxhall in 1954. Originally thinking it would be for the summer, they stayed for forty six and a half years. Betty worked a number of jobs, typically in restaurants, and eventually assumed the role of book keeper for F. Miller Excavating, a position she held for twenty eight years. She was an avid volunteer, whether it be for minor hockey or later on as the treasurer for the Vauxhall Golf Course. Betty was very proud of the trees that were planted and we recall many a time where she’d gone out to ensure they were adequately watered. Having five children they travelled many miles hauling children and their friends. Whether it was sports, concerts or the flavour of the day, she always made sure we had these opportunities. Occasionally even taking her grandchildren. The Miller’s moved into Lethbridge on December 8, 2000 after building their fourth house together. They enjoyed many years of golfing, curling, bowling, dancing and playing cards with friends. Betty always kept score in cards and did manage to win her fair share. They enjoyed many years of travelling to Alaska, the Maritimes, Cuba, China, Australia, New Zealand, Europe, California and numerous trips to Minot and Branson. There were even two entire family trips to Mexico. Betty was an avid sports fan and loved watching any sport that her children and grandchildren participated in. That said, she had a true passion for baseball. She grew up playing during the spring at school, having to sew the baseball back together at times. This led to being a great fan to her sons and daughter and later on grandchildren. Betty was known to watch the Vauxhall Academy, the PBA and the Lethbridge Bulls. She made trips to Vauxhall on game day well into her late eighties to watch the Academy. Betty always had a score book in her hand. She also enjoyed watching the Toronto Blue Jays, although most of them could use a haircut. Betty was a woman of integrity, honesty and generosity. She believed in helping those less fortunate than her and had a competitive nature that is unmatched. Something she passed along to her children and grandchildren. She will be forever missed. If friends so desire, memorial tributes in Betty’s name can be made directly to the Chinook Regional Hospital Foundation, 960 – 19 Street South, Lethbridge, Alberta T1J 1W5.

RUDY STEINKEY

RUDY STEINKEY 1951 ~ 2024
Rudolph “Rudy” Steinkey passed away on Thursday, October 3, 2024, at the age of 73 years, beloved husband of Elaine Steinkey of Medicine Hat. He also leaves to cherish his memory five children, Sheldon (Jody), Kimberly (Sean), Pamela (Clayton), Shane (Jaime), and Shaun (Mel); thirteen grandchildren, Stephanie, Brianne, Miranda, Connor, Hailey, Nickolas, Ty, Brooklyn, Shayla, Carter, Collins, Kaycee, and Kylee; his great grandchild, Kylan; his brother, Tony (Bonny) Steinkey; two sisters, Victoria (George) Jabour and Rose (Don) Ebelher; his mother-in-law, Lena Eresman as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Elizabeth and John Steinkey; his father-in-law, Nick Eresman and his brother-in-law, Harry Kurtz.
Rudy was born in Leader, Saskatchewan and grew up on a farm southwest of Liebenthal, Saskatchewan. He married Elaine on October 6, 1973. Dad was bigger than life to his family. As the grandkids would say, “If Grandpa can’t fix it, nobody can.” Dad loved farming and outdoor life. He lived to putter, fix, and organize, and at the end of the day, to sit around a fire enjoying the peace and quiet. Come spring or fall, his favourite sound was the geese honking as they flew overhead or settled on dugouts and sloughs.
He loved our mom three days short of 51 years. They made a great team! He was so proud of his family and there was nothing he wouldn’t do to help us. He loved us unconditionally.
Dad sat on many community boards, coached ball, and was Grand Knight of the Liebenthal Knights of Columbus Council from 1985 to 1987. He was a busy man. In addition to farming full time, he also worked in the gas patch. His faith and love of music and dancing helped him get through his last few months. His feet were always tapping, and on his better days, he would ask Mom to dance. As his disease progressed, we were amazed how he kept his sense of humour, his patience, and accepted his suffering without complaint. He said he had a good life and can die a happy man. Rest in peace Dad.
Those who wish to pay their respect may do so one hour prior to both the prayer service as well as the funeral mass. JANIS BOOKER

JANIS BOOKER July 20, 1949 ~ October 4, 2024
Janis Booker, beloved wife of the late Garland Booker, passed away peacefully in the presence of her family at St. Joseph’s Home Carmel Hospice in Medicine Hat on Friday, October 4, 2024, at the age of 75 years.
Born on July 20, 1949, in Roblin, Manitoba, Janis grew up in her hometown, where she met the love of her life, Garland. High school sweethearts, they were married when she was just 19, beginning a lifelong partnership built on love, laughter, and shared dreams.
Janis and Garland moved west to Calgary, where they bought their first home, a milestone that marked the beginning of many adventures. In 1975, they relocated to Redcliff and founded El-San Industries, building the business from the ground up. It was here that Janis found her true calling not only as a supportive wife, but also as a caring figure for many of the young adults who moved out west. She became a surrogate mother to them, always offering a hot meal, a comfortable home, clean clothes and emotional and financial support. Her hospitality left a lasting impact and meant so much to them.
Janis and Garland lived in the same house for 49 years, a home she proudly maintained and always said she could happily live in forever. Her home was more than a residence it was a haven for family and friends, a place filled with laughter, delicious meals, and unforgettable memories. Janis was an incredible host, known for her generosity and her ability to make everyone feel welcome and loved. She truly made the house a home!
Though she had a fear of flying, Janis didn’t let that stop her from traveling and exploring new places. She was spontaneous and always ready for an adventure, often organizing family trips in no time at all. Her love for traveling was rivaled only by her passion for gardening and watching her grandchildren shine in their sports and activities. Janis was the definition of a supportive, family-oriented lady, always putting her loved ones first.
She will be deeply missed and will be forever cherished and remembered by her children: daughter, Tracy (Steve) Forbes and their children, Brianna, Grant and Cassandra; son, Donald (Daria) Booker and their children, Ryan and James; two brothers, sisters-in-law as well as numerous nieces, nephews and extended family. She was predeceased by her husband, Garland; her parents; 2 brothers, 4 sisters and extended family.
A Celebration of Janis’ life will be held at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, 901 – 13 Street S.W., Medicine Hat on Thursday, October 10, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. with Life Celebrant Gerry Getz officiating.
