1935 ~ JUNE THOMPSON ~ 2024 June Thompson passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 14, 2024, at Riverview Care Centre in Medicine Hat.
June will always be loved by her daughter, Tracey, and son-in-law, Dave Dion. June is lovingly remembered as Nana to Max (Amanda) and Rielle (Andrew) and as great grandma to Chloe and Madelyn Dion and Theo and Hank Krushelniski. June was predeceased by Jack Thompson in 1992; her parents, Amelia and Whitworth Styring, and her brothers, Richard and Harry Styring.
In lieu of flowers, please give something to someone else. June helped others through charitable donations, but also through her kindness.
A private family memorial has taken place. June requested a casual Come and Go celebration of her life to take place. On Saturday, April 20, 2024, from 1-4 pm at 55 Taylor Blvd SE, we will gather to reminisce and have some dessert. Please bring your stories, old photos, and your laughter to our home. HERB STICKEL
1952 ~ HERB STICKEL ~ 2024 Herb Stickel of Medicine Hat, passed away surrounded by family on Saturday, April 13th, 2024 at the age of 71 years. Herb is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Terry and his two children, Scott (Lana); and Heather; granddaughters, Jade (Dylan) Parker and Makayla Stickel (George Byrde); great-grandson’s, Ganon and Finn Parker; niece, Brandee (Jon) Anderson and their children, Anna, Bekah, Will and Logan. Herb was predeceased by his parents, Emanuel and Rose Stickel; and in-laws, Tony and Anna Fiitterer. In his free time, Herb enjoyed woodworking, arts and crafts with his grandchildren, playing cards, and the companionship of his beloved pets Q and Jabba. He could often be found with a good cup of coffee and a cigarette, while sitting on the deck, visiting with family and friends. He always enjoyed a sweet treat to eat, especially when made by his granddaughters. He was devoted to his family and loved being with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Countless wonderful memories were created over the years, and Grandpa’s elated laughter, which lit up every room, will be forever cherished and dearly missed. Herb was passionate about his computer consulting business, enjoyed helping others and acquired many lifelong friendships (Pat & Heather Flinn, Greg & Monica Hopkins, Bob Riehl) and numerous others. A special thank you to the Cancer clinic, Palliative care team, especially Pearl, and all the wonderful staff at St. Joseph’s Hospice. In his 80th year, Wayne Autry Brears passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home in Medicine Hat on Sunday, April 14, 2024. Wayne was born on April 18, 1943, to parents, James Brears and Ruth Brears (nee Cowan) and grew up on the family farm. After a variety of jobs, he worked at Campbell’s Soup for 35 years after which he retired. After the passing of his dear wife, Donna Brears (nee Martin) in 2003, Wayne moved in with family and moved to Alberta. He was passionate about sports, especially baseball and rarely missed tuning into his favourite teams or going to local sporting events. Wayne loved bowling with family and friends and spending time with family making memories. Wayne was the loving father of Jim Brears; daughter-in-law, Dorothy Brears (nee Goossen) and Ruth Groom (nee Brears) and dear Grandpa to Trevor Brears, Ryan Brears and Amy Kavanagh, Shane Groom and Jaida Groom. Wayne was predeceased by his wife, Donna Brears; son, Tom Brears; parents, James and Ruth Brears; siblings, Geraldine Noble, Bev Brears, Larry Brears as well as Harold Brears in infancy. A private family celebration of Wayne’s Life will be held on Saturday, April 20, 2024. He will be laid to rest alongside his wife Donna at the Harriston Cremation Garden at a later date. ERROL CARRUTHERS 1930 ~ 2024 Errol Webster Carruthers, beloved husband of the late Margaret Berger, died Tuesday, February 20, 2024 at Good Samaritan South Ridge Villa, Medicine Hat, AB. He will be missed by his siblings; Margaret Carruthers, Toronto, ON; Norman (Diana), Charlottetown, PE; Beth Cruickshank, Gravenhurst, ON; Doris (Bob May), Toronto, ON, several nieces and nephews, and by his special friend, Ida Kenny, Edmonton, AB. He was predeceased by his sister, Esther Jorgensen; his brother: Clair Carruthers; by his brother-in-law, Jim Cruickshank; his brothers-in-law, Palmer and Obert Berger; and sisters-in-law, Adeline Stertz and Helen Berger. Errol was born in Summerside, P.E.I. on August 24, 1930, the eldest of eight children of the late Lorne and Jean (Webster) Carruthers. He was brought up on the family farm in Augustine Cove, P.E.I. and was educated in Augustine Cove’s two-room school, high school at Prince of Wales College in Charlottetown, Bachelor of Science at Mount Allison University, Sackville, NB, and Master of Science at McGill University in Montreal. After graduation, Errol worked with Atomic Energy of Canada at Chalk River, ON. Later he taught high school at Deep River, ON. In 1965, Errol moved to Medicine Hat, AB to teach chemistry in the new Medicine Hat College. In retirement Errol enjoyed membership in the Golden K Kiwanis Club working mainly with young children. He also enjoyed the company of friends and travelling as well as golfing and curling. Errol was generous with his time in the community and in his church, Victory Lutheran. A celebration of Errol’s life will be held on Tuesday, April 23rd at Victory Lutheran Church, 2793 Southview Dr SE, Medicine Hat, AB T1B 2H1 at 11:00 am. 1932 ~ EDWIN DEERING ~ 2024 Edwin Henry Deering passed away, after a courageous battle with cancer, on Monday, April 8th, 2024 at the age of 91 years. He is survived by his sons, Vincent (Lisa), Wayne ( Carla), and Larry Helm (Bonnie); daughter, Doreen Gunderson (Darcy Harty); 16 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; his brother, Allen (Pearl); sisters, Emma, Lily (Wynn), Laurena, and Peggy; many nieces and nephews; as well as his special friend, Virginia Hildenbrand. He was predeceased by his wife, Magdalena “Lena”; son, Allen Helm; and his parents, Henry and Erna, as well as many other family members. Dad was a hard worker all of his life. He worked for the City of Medicine Hat for 32 years, not one to sit still, he also worked for Schlenker’s Auction for another 16 years. Most weekdays you could find him at the Viener Centre playing shuffleboard, pool, and having coffee with his friends. Saturday mornings he was a staple at the Farmers Market. If you met Dad there was always a joke to be told to you, ALWAYS! He was a kind, gentle man who will be missed by his family and all those who knew him. GORDON THOMAS SAILER
Gordon Thomas Sailer, a gifted artist known for his profound care and compassion, passed away suddenly on April 13th, 2024, at the age of 61 years after battling illness for several months. Born May 9th, 1962, in Medicine Hat, Gordon dedicated his life to his artistic pursuits, leaving behind a legacy of creativity. His mastery of airbrush artwork, mural painting, and screen printing captured the imagination of all who had the privilege of experiencing his work. Beyond his artistic talents, Gordon will be remembered most for his deep love and care for those around him. He touched the lives of many with his kindness, humor, and generosity of spirit. Gordon is survived by his mother Joan Sauve, son Arlo (Jerry) Sailer, grandson Branson Sailer, brother David Sailer, sister Allyson (Pat) Honig, sister Carolyn Parchewsky, nieces, and nephews Safra (Rylan) Sailer, Ryland (Chelsea) Honig, Zenon (Janaya) Parchewsky, Javen (Aliya) Honig, Zachary (Sabrina) Parchewsky, Kade Honig, Israel (Callum) Honig, and Valen Honig who will carry on his memory with love. Gordon is predeceased by his grandparents Isabel (Thomas) Sharp, Christian (Matilda) Sailer, father Gerald “Jeb” Sailer, and father Walter Sauve. He was often referred to as Uncle Gordie, sometimes crazy Uncle Gordie; in his formative years, he was a Schmenge brother; to us, he was Dad, and in his later years, he was Grandpa Gord. In addition to his artistic pursuits, Gordon found immense joy in a variety of hobbies. He was a golfer, finding peace on the green. Fishing and camping brought him closer to nature. Gordon was also known for his love of people and living on the wild side, often seen having fun with his family and friends, creating cherished memories that will endure. ERICA GERTNER 1948 – 2024 Erica Anne Gertner passed away on Wednesday, April 17, 2024, at the age of 75 years, beloved wife for 57 years of Ronald “Ron” Gertner of Medicine Hat. She also leaves to cherish her memory their daughter Devery (Zane) and son Blake (Judi); one grandson Kade; her siblings Jeanette (Larry), Rose Mary, Julie (Harwood) and Steven (Wanda); Ron’s siblings, Ed (Linda), Larry (Evelyn) and Sharon (Ron) as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Erica was predeceased by her parents Hubert and Tillie Anton; one brother David and his wife Dolores and by Ron’s parents Paul and Rose Gertner. Erica Anne was born June 9, 1948, in Calgary, Alberta to Hubert and Tillie Anton. She was raised at Fox Valley, Saskatchewan where she met the love of her life Ron Gertner. They married on July 2, 1966, in Fox Valley before moving to Medicine Hat and then branching out to other towns and cities before making Medicine Hat their home to raise their two children. Erica enjoyed her time with family and she also enjoyed reading her novels and always had a collection of books. She loved flowers and during the warm season she was outside tending to their yard and flowers beds. Erica was a talented painter, mostly with oil paints, and her beautiful artwork was displayed throughout their home.
