Len was predeceased by Marjorie his loving wife of 58 years; his parents Andrew and Barbara Harty, sister’s Alice Flaig and Pearl Matz, brother Ken Harty, mother and father-in-law Irene and Frank Young.
Dad was born on January 15, 1937, the oldest of six siblings who were always grateful for everything he did for them.
His first job was at the Assiniboia Hotel as a bellhop and was considered family by the owners, the Cantalini’s. Len started a new career with the City of Medicine Hat Police Department in 1959. Over the years, dad earned the respect of many officers and the citizens of Medicine Hat as he was known to give many a break.
Len was not one to sit around as he had side jobs that kept him very busy including Len’s Water Hauling, playing banjo with the Harty Band. He also served on many boards including the Park Meadows Condo Board for many years.
Some of his many hobbies included purchasing and trading off vehicles, curling, golfing, and baseball.
Dad and mom spent many years traveling to Arizona and California in their motor home. Dad loved riding his Harley and Honda Goldwing, which was quite a passion for him. For many years he led the parade with his Police motorcycle.
Hockey was a sport Len also loved! He really enjoyed watching his grandsons and great-granddaughter/son participate. Going to Tiger games, dances and playing cards with family and friends were also a joy!
When mom became ill, dad became her faithful caregiver, which allowed mom to stay in their condo. Dad was grief stricken when mom passed away but found a best friend and partner with Dorothy for nine years. She supported him till his last days.
Diabetes took a toll on our dad, but he managed the best he could. Len was quite proud that he never had to spend time in the hospital in his life until he had a brain bleed and was kept in the hospital for eleven weeks.
Len was diagnosed with vascular dementia with Alzheimer’s. Once he was healthy enough, he was placed in Good Samaritans for a year until his passing. Dad became the favorite of the caregivers.
Dad, we thank you for your 30 years of service serving your community. You are truly our hero!!!
