It is with great sorrow the family of Arthur (Archie) Stern announces his passing on Monday, October 30, 2023 peacefully at Glengarda in Saskatoon at the age of 83. Archie is survived by his wife Pauline of 63 years; two daughters Cindy (Graig) and Tracy (Stan); four grandchildren Taylor (Katrina), Logan (Maddy), Tanner (Felicity), and Zakery. He is also survived by two brothers Harold Stern and Ken (Lil) Stern, two sisters-in-laws Doreen Hauck and Alice Hauck as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son Darrell, parents Allen and Christina Stern, brother and sister-in-law Howard and June Stern as well as several other family members. Archie was born on August 10, 1940 at the family farm near Golden Prairie, Saskatchewan. At the age of 8 he moved with his family to Medicine Hat where he grew up. On June 11, 1960 Archie married the love of his life Pauline Hauck. Together they were blessed with three wonderful children and four amazing grandchildren. Archie worked as a shipper for the Medicine Hat Greenhouses starting in 1956. He worked there for 24 years. In 1980 the family moved to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan where Archie was the General Manager of Florist Supply Norsask Ltd. until he retired at age 55. Archie always loved to travel and was lucky enough to see most of Canada, lots of the US, Mexico, Columbia and Europe. He really loved the years spent in Yuma, Arizona and Emma Lake, Saskatchewan. His passion was fishing. He loved fishing with his family especially the grandchildren. He easily made friends with people both young and old. He always wanted to help everyone and always had a tool or machine to lend out. A special thank you to the wonderful staff at the Hospice at Glengarda during the last two weeks of his life. They made his days enjoyable and filled with laughter. Donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Hospice at Glengarda. Donald ‘Don’ Henry Phillips, beloved husband of the late Pat Phillips, passed away in Medicine Hat with family at his bedside following a brief illness on Tuesday, October 24, 2023, at the age of 82 years. Don leaves to cherish his memory: three sons, Brad (Leila), Jeff (Boerny) and Don Jr. (Lisa); three grandchildren, Kelsey (Joel) Wagner, Alexander Phillips and Anthony Phillips; his very special great-granddaughter, Madeline Wagner as well as numerous other extended family including daughter-in-law, Laverne Phillips. He was predeceased by his honourary grandchild, Mitchell Burton. Don was born and raised in the Trail, B.C. area. He proudly served in the R.C.A.F. from 1960 – 1994, retiring in Medicine Hat. During retirement, Don was very involved and donated much of his time to the Royal Canadian Legion, Robertson Memorial Branch #17 as well as the Lions Club of Medicine Hat. Don’s strong sense of duty for his family and for his country will be forever remembered by all who knew him. A Celebration of Don’s life will be held at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, 901 – 13 Street S.W., Medicine Hat on Friday, November 10, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. Private Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery with a time of fellowship thereafter in the Cook Southland Reception Facility. 1933 ~ JAMES GEHRING ~ 2023 James Gehring of Medicine Hat, passed away on Saturday, October 28th, 2023 at the age of 90 years. James leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, Shirley; Jim’s children, Shelley Janssens, Blair Gehring and Dana (Marilyn) Gehring, Shirley’s children, Dean (Regina) Durst and Brenda Grona; grandchildren, Jennifer, Bradley, Sarah, Brien, Michelle, Jacee, Jory, Jenna, Jackson and Jules; step-grandchild, Dakota Grona; sister, Cindy Gehring as well as numerous nieces and nephews. 1932 ~ FRIEDA ROLL ~ 2023 Frieda Roll of Medicine Hat, AB passed away on November 1st, 2023, at the age of 91 years. She leaves behind to cherish her memory, her son, Clarence; a daughter, Arlene (Brian) Ashwick; three grandchildren, Corinna Brown (Dennis), Clayton Ulrich (Tammy), Cameron Ulrich (Brittany); seven great grandchildren, and two step great grandchildren. Frieda had a long and productive life starting her work life at the Club Café. Frieda married and became a farm wife. She was kind and sharing, when there was a problem or accident, she was usually the first to help and the last to leave. Her life was filled with hard work. She managed the meals, baked bread, and did all the jobs to feed a family and raise her two children. Frieda loved old style country hymns, Charlie Pride and assorted lrish Tenors. Her final words were, “Heaven is so beautiful, l just love the flowers”. Frieda’s life can best be summed up in the poem, “I expect to travel this way but once, therefore if there is kindness I can show to any creature, let me not defer nor neglect it, as I shall not pass this way again”. Her passage in life was filled with joy, service to others, good crops, bad crops, hail, hoppers and scratching a living during the horrors of the depression and rationing. JAN JOSIN GIJBELS
Jan Josin Gijbels of Medicine Hat, beloved friend and brother, passed away after a lengthy illness on October 22, 2023, at the age of 73 years. Jan was born in Amsterdam, Holland on March 30, 1950, and immigrated to Canada in 1953. Jan lived in the Michener Center from 1958 to 1993, at which time he entered the community. He has received day program services from C.O.R.E. in the past and has been with Next Step Residential Services since 2000. Jan loved coffee, pickles, and sweets; he quite often asked for “cookies, candy, ice cream and ketchup”. He enjoyed music, especially classical or country; Jan would tap his toes or fingers to the rhythm and at times wanted to dance. Jan had an electronic keyboard which he liked to tickle the ivories on or listen to staff play for him. One of his favorite songs was “You Are My Sunshine”, he loved listening to this and would finish the lyrics in the song. Jan enjoyed visiting community events in the city such as Parades, the Stampede, The Dream Center, dances and other holiday events. Jan attended Next Step camp and liked to go on day trips in Southern Alberta, as he appreciated the outdoors. He was a polite gentleman who always greeted others with “hello” and a handshake. Jan was predeceased by his parents Anna Catherina and Theodorus Samuel Gybels and is survived by his siblings Annemarie Berryman (Jeff), Allan Gybels (Sandra), Ingrid Mathison (Gary), Ted Gybels (Tamara), and Jack Haley. Jan will be dearly missed by his friends, staff, and other community members. JERRY VAN DYK 1961 – 2023 It is with great sadness and broken hearts that we share the sudden passing of Jerry Van Dyk on Monday, October 30, 2023, our beloved son, brother and uncle. He is survived by his loving mother, Adriana Van Dyk, and sisters, Mary Rose, Elfriede (Don) Hoose, and Adriana (Jim) Mackay. Jerry also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, whom he loved so dearly, as well as many cousins and extended family in Holland and Australia. Jerry was predeceased by his father, Gerard (Red) Van Dyk; his sister, Jan Owen, and bother-in-law, Alan Rose. Jerry was born on March 20, 1961, in Medicine Hat and raised in Redcliff; he attended elementary school in Redcliff and graduated from Medicine Hat High School. After graduation, Jerry began working for IXL Industries until they closed their doors, and then joined Plato’s Roofing where he remained employed until recently. Jerry’s family was everything to him. He was patient, kind and loving, and his unwavering care and support for his mother in particular will be irreplaceable. His nieces and nephews meant the world to him, and in turn he was always the favourite fun uncle. Jerry was best known for his humor, always in for a good joke or cartoon. He enjoyed music and games, and was the tech savvy one his siblings turned to for help. Jerry will be so greatly missed by all who knew him. A private family time of remembrance will be held with Life Celebrant David Townsend officiating and interment to follow in the Redcliff Cemetery.
