COLLEEN SCHMALTZ January 24, 1930 ~ September 1, 2023 The family of Colleen Schmaltz are saddened to announce her passing in Medicine Hat on Friday, September 1, 2023, at the age of 93 years. Left to cherish Colleen’s memory are her three children, Rosanna Schmaltz, David (Jo-Anne) Schmaltz and Fay Schmaltz (Dan Gaucher); son-in-law, Vern Vossler (Val Kelly); five grandchildren, Ann Vossler, Lorne (Rachel) Vossler, Erin Vossler, Davin Schmaltz and Althea Schmaltz; six great-grandchildren, Logan Schulz, Hallie Vossler, Vaughn Vossler, Tala Taefu, Elei Taefu and Sina Taefu; sister-in-law, Irene Schmaltz as well as many nieces and nephews. Colleen was predeceased by her parents, Charles (Ross) and Anna McKay; father and mother-in-law, Frank and Rosa Schmaltz; husband, Ralph Schmaltz; daughter, Yvonne Vossler; sister, Juanita McLennan and brothers and sisters-in-law, Elizabeth (Roy) Steier, Rose (Tony) Mardian, Frank (Barbara) Schmaltz, Simon Schmaltz and Walter McLennan. Colleen Dolores McKay was born in Redcliff and resided there for the majority of her life. It was while working at Domglas as a young woman that she met a handsome young man named Ralph. They were married on June 13, 1953, and remained devoted to each other during their 68 years of marriage until Ralph’s passing in 2021. Colleen was most proud of her family, and time spent together was very important to her. She was always interested in what her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were doing. Colleen had a lifelong love of music. She served as organist and choir director at St. Mary’s Church for 33 years, during which time she found the fellowship and creative fun times with her choir mates very special and fulfilling. She also composed several pieces of music for members of our family. Colleen was a compassionate woman of quiet faith, who joined the Catholic Women’s League in 1955 and remained a member ever since then. She believed in little miracles and guardian angels. She loved the beauty of nature, especially the garden at her longtime home in Redcliff (and all the fruits and vegetables produced there). We will remember her as a skilled and determined competitor to the end in our many games of cribbage and Chinese checkers. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 238 2 Avenue N.E., Medicine Hat on Thursday, September 7, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. with Father Roque Pereira Celebrant. Private Interment will follow at the Redcliff Cemetery. Those who wish to remember Colleen may do so through a donation to AJ’s Loan Cupboard, P.O. Box 45006, MacKenzie Drugs Postal Outlet, Medicine Hat, AB., T1A 0B1 or to the Red Cross, 398 Aberdeen Street S.E., Medicine Hat, AB., T1A 0R2. Condolences may be expressed by visiting
