1936 ~ MARY BERNER ~ 2023 Mary Berner of Medicine Hat, passed away on Friday, June 9th, 2023 at the age of 86 years. Mary leaves to cherish her memory her husband, Arnold Berner; children, Stephen (Sue), Don (Sharon) and Helen; grandchildren, Alex, Allyssa and Brody. Mary was predeceased by her parents, Steve and Elizabeth Toth; and brother, Stephen Toth. Mary met Arnold at Amos Motors, where they both worked, and they were married in 1957. Mary loved gardening and canning the fruits of her labour. She enjoyed going to dances at the Elk’s, Eagles and the Moose where she met many friends. Mary was a devoted member of the Royal Purple for over 55 years. VERN RUFF 1942 ~ 2023 Vernon Edward Ruff, beloved husband of 62 years to Marlene, passed away peacefully while in the comfort of his home on Saturday, June 10, 2023, at the age of 81 years. Along with Marlene, Vern’s memory will forever remain in the hearts of his family: daughter, Joni (Murray) and their family, Justin (Amy), Ben (Megan) and Will †; son, Jim (Angie) and their family, Nico, Noah and Talia; daughter, Kathy (Carmen) and their family, Courtney (Jared), Cameron (Hannah), Paige (Joel), Chad (Brittany) and their son Cooper as well as Austin (Mikaela). Vern is survived by two brothers, Ray (Bernie) and family, Bob (Lyndell) and family as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other extended family. Along with his parents, William and Louise Ruff, Vern was predeceased by a grandson, Will Bouchard as well as a nephew, Rob Ruff. Vern was born in Medicine Hat on March 8, 1942. While still in High School, he started working with his brother, Ray for their Dad at the family garage, Bill’s Automotive Ltd. They eventually purchased the garage, continuing the family business until their retirement. Relatives and friends are invited to a come and go celebration of Vern’s life to be held in the Cook Southland Reception Facility, 901 – 13 Street S.W., Medicine Hat on Tuesday, June 20, 2023, between 10:00 a.m. and Noon. It is with sadness that the family of Theodore Richard Dennis Herman announce his peaceful passing at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital on Wednesday, June 14, 2023. Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 54 years, Kathleen Herman (nee Wyatt); eldest son, Dennis “Ross” Herman; son, Ryan (Ariana) Herman and their children, Sheridyn and Zach; son, Todd (Valerie) Herman and their children, Molly, Sophie, and Charlie; daughter, Kerri (Bill) Stait and their children, Brooke and Will. Also left to cherish his memory are his brothers, Tom Herman, Jim (Renee) Herman, Nolan Herman and friend, Betty Morin; sisters, Bonnie Hartung, Dixie Vair, Lois (Randy) Beck; cousin Donna Martin; brother-in-law, Don (Diane) Wyatt as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Dennis was predeceased by his parents, Ted and Irene Herman; brother Bernie; father and mother-in-law, Bill and Vivian Wyatt; Uncle Edwin Herrmann; Aunt Vera Herrmann; sister-in-law, Antonia Herman; brothers-in-law, Don Vair and Ted Wyatt as well as his cousin-in-law, Larry Martin. Dennis was a dedicated family man and a great friend to many. He loved farming and ranching to his core and spent much of his life serving the communities of Schuler, Cypress County and Medicine Hat through service on Schuler community boards, councilor and Reeve of Cypress County, Chair of MH and District Health Unit and long time secretary/treasurer of Drowning Ford Grazing Association. Dennis’ thoughtfulness, kindness and reasoned approach to many challenges made him a valued leader in all of the endeavors he was involved in. A Celebration of Dennis’ life will take place at the Carriage House on the Medicine Hat Stampede Grounds, 2055 – 21 Avenue S.E., Medicine Hat on Monday, June 19, 2023, at 12:00 p.m. Following the celebration, those in attendance are encouraged to stay for a beef on a bun meal and the sharing of memories. SHIRLEY MAE WINNIFRED HEINE (BIGGS) November 5th, 1934 June 11th, 2023
Shirley Mae Heine (nee Biggs) of Medicine Hat, Alberta, beloved wife of Doug Heine, passed away peacefully at Riverview Care Centre on Sunday, June 11th, 2023 at the age of 88 years. Shirley was born, raised and educated in Medicine Hat.
She had a deep love of music and was gifted with a beautiful singing voice. As a result, she focused her education in the arts by obtaining her Associate Degree (ARCT) Diploma in music. She used her gifts to enrich generations of students by instilling a love of music, its history and theory. In addition to private lessons, she taught Early Introduction to Music to all kindergarten classes in Medicine Hat. Shirley enjoyed directing Adult, Youth, and Childrens Choirs. She volunteered for many years with the Rotary Music Festival.
Shirley belonged to the Choristers Guild of America, was a member of PEO, and attended St Barnabas Church. She was a member of Cottonwood Coulee Golf Course and enjoyed golfing around the world. She was a proud member of the “hole in one” club.
Family trips included camping in Sorrento and attending music camps around North America. Travelling internationally began with volunteering as a family for the Commonwealth Games in Brisbane, Australia in 1982. Since then, they have travelled to all 7 continents, which included a 68-day Cruise to South America and Antarctica. Other memorable destinations were a Safari in Africa, River Cruises, trips to Europe, Israel, and numerous other countries. “Ever the Adventurer”, Shirley rode camels in Egypt, Dolphins in Mexico, Ostriches in Africa and Elephants in Thailand.
Shirley is survived by her husband of 68 years, Doug Heine. Doug and Shirley were sweethearts in high school and were married on July 30th, 1954. She is also survived by one son, Kent (Ruth) Heine and their children, Jordan (Sondra) Heine, Andrea (Chad) Coene, and Sarah Heine (Cory Hauge); daughter, Sharon (Mickey) Todd and their children, Jennifer (Vay) Tu, Jordan (Tarla) Todd, and Nathan Todd (Billy Teng); great-grandchildren, Kien Tu, Harper Tu, Paisley Coene, and Hudson Heine.
She was predeceased by her parents, George and Dorothy Biggs; her brother, Gordon Biggs, and sister, Queenie Miller; Doug’s father, John Heine, and stepfather, Rudolph Heine; mother, Rose Heine (Maves), and an infant son, Gerald Heine, who died at birth.
Sadly, Shirley was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2011 and spent many years in the loving hands of the caregivers at Riverview Care Centre. Those wishing to remember Shirley may do so through a donation to the Alzheimer Society at #101, 1201 Kingsway Ave SE, Medicine Hat, Alberta T1A 2Y2.
She was a very faithful Christian, who set a strong example for all of us to follow. The Funeral Service will be held at St. Barnabas Anglican Church, 635 – 4 Street SE, Medicine Hat AB T1A 0L1, on Friday, June 23rd, 2023 at 2:00 pm with Rev Oz Lorentzen officiating. It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Robert “Bob” James Wolstenholme on June 8th, 2023 at the age of 87 years. Bob was born in Lac la Biche, AB on November 25th, 1935. A dedicated sea cadet, Bob joined the Air Force as a radio operator, having already obtained his ham radio license at the age of 14. It was there that he met his wife Marjorie and they were wed in 1957 in Lac la Biche. Bob started his career with Alberta Transportation and resided in Stettler before retiring to Medicine Hat where he and Marj remained for 30 years. Bob was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Marj, as well as his two sisters, Dorothy and Connie. He is survived by his three children, Joanne (Collen) Bootsman, Blake Wolstenholme, and Dyan (Terry) Nims; six grandchildren, Karen (Phil) Zaugg, Matt (Melissa) Bootsman, Amberly (Daniel) Allers, Brandon Nims, Kyle (Kendra) Nims, and Katie Nims (Mark); 13 great-grandchildren; brother, Jack; and many other relatives and good friends. In accordance with Bob’s wishes, a private family interment will take place at a later date.
