MARK BOLENDER

MARK BOLENDER 1949 ~ 2023
After a courageous twelve year journey with Parkinson’s Disease, Gordon Mark Bolender victoriously entered the presence of Jesus on Friday, May 19, 2023. He leaves to cherish his memory his high school sweetheart and loving wife Karen to whom he was married for 51 years, and his beloved son Jesse Mark Bolender of Medicine Hat, of whom he was very proud. Mark is also survived by his brother David Bolender, (Jackie) of Lasalle, Ontario, his sister Merla Bolender (Gregory Nigh) of Calgary, Alberta, his brother-in-law Ron Filsinger, (Maggie Heeney) of Kitchener, Ontario, as well as loving nieces and nephews and their families. He was predeceased by his parents, Gordon and Doris Bolender who were Missionaries In Nigeria, where Mark was born, and spent the first ten years of his life. Upon returning from Nigeria, the Bolender family settled in Kitchener, Ontario. As a young man, he began to sense the call of God on his life to become a pastor, and he attended Emmanuel Bible College in Kitchener Ontario, graduating in 1972. Mark and Karen will always be grateful for the privilege of growing up in a loving church family at Bethany Evangelical Missionary Church in Kitchener, Ontario, and for the privilege of serving the Lincoln Heights EMC with Dr. Thomas E. Dow in Waterloo Ontario, the Banfield Memorial EMC with Dr. Alfred Reese in Willowdale Ontario, the Country Hills EMC. in Kitchener, Ontario and the Hillcrest EMC in Medicine Hat, Alberta. The prayer support and the friendships from these congregations have lasted until today. How we thank God! He was elected President of the Evangelical Missionary Church of Canada in 1997, and he served until 2002. His travels took him to visit churches in Mexico, Jamaica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Quebec, Spain, Portugal and Nigeria. After 42 years, he retired from full-time ministry in 2014, and was honored to be named “Pastor Emeritus” of Hillcrest Church. Mark has been placed in the capable care of the Pattison Funeral Home and Crematorium, to be returned to ashes with dignity, and then subsequently, his ashes will be interred at Hillside Cemetery, Medicine Hat, Alberta. The funeral service that will remember and celebrate the Faithfulness of God throughout his life, and celebrate his life in the presence of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ will be held at Hillcrest Evangelical Missionary Church, (3785 – 13th Avenue S.E.) on Friday, June 16, 2023, at 1:00 p.m. A private committal service will take place the following day. LARRY HANKINS

LARRY HANKINS 1953 ~ 2023 Lawrence “Larry” Hankins passed away peacefully on Monday, June 5, 2023 at the age of 70 years, beloved husband of Penny Hankins of Medicine Hat. He also leaves to cherish his memory two children, Christina (Michael) Bunting and Benjamin (Jill) Hankins; his grandchildren, Mackenzie Hankins, Kian Hankins, and William Bunting; two sisters, Stella (Ralph) Arndt and Faith (Neil) Schattle; his life long best friend John Kahl; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Lucille and Lawrence Hankins; his sister, Anne Marie Pielak; grandparents, Grace and Francis Goller; parents-in-law, Doreen and Bill Wray along with numerous aunts and uncles. The man, the myth, the legend. Larry was born in Swift Current, Saskatchewan on May 26, 1953 to Lawrence and Lucille Hankins. At the age of six, the family relocated to Medicine Hat where he took his schooling, graduating from Crescent Heights High School in 1971. Shortly after graduation, Larry married Penny Wray on July 6, 1974. At this point the adventure began. Larry joined Halliburton which took them to many places in Alberta and the North West Territories, including High Level, Inuvik, and Whitecourt where they welcomed their daughter. In 1980, dad left the oil patch and the family relocated to Calgary, where he pursued his dream of owning his own bowling alley “Toppler Bowl”. A son was added in 1981 completing the family. They soon moved back to Medicine Hat where the roots finally stuck. Dad again found himself drawn to the bowling industry working at Panorama Lanes. After a few years, he purchased two shares in Deluxe Central Taxi which he proudly owned and operated for over 20 years until he was forced into an early retirement due tohealth concerns. Dad loved fishing, camping, bowling, going to Tigers hockey games, playing cards and visiting with friends. He also enjoyed time with his children and grandchildren who were the apple of his eye. Until we meet again, keep the bowling alley ready. At Larry’s request, no funeral service will be held. A celebration of life will occur at a later date. Those who wish to remember Larry with a donation may do so to the Heart and Stroke Foundation http://www.heartandstroke.ca.
