RAYMOND STABLER
RAYMOND (RAY) STABLER February 16, 1932 – December 14, 2022 God granted Ray’s last wish. Ray is reunited with the love of his life Hedwig and his two sons Wesley and Ricky. He was also predeceased by his parents Reinhold and Molly Stabler and a brother and sister who died in infancy. Ray has left a legacy of love for life and his family. Ray leaves to mourn his daughter Grace, grandson Jesse (Chrystal) and great grandchildren Eliana and Forrest. Born and raised in Burstall Ray grew up helping on the family farm. Farming was his life. Once a farmer…always a farmer…was one of his favourite sayings. In 1953, he married Hedy and they started their life together. In 1961, they built a new Beaver Lumber home on the family homestead to raise their family. Ray enjoyed farming with his Dad and his sons. After his sons’ death, Grace became his right hand girl on the farm. Ray was active in the community of Burstall. He enjoyed curling, bowling, fishing, playing pool and cards on Saturday nights. He was a member of the men’s choir and an Usher at the Burstall Evangelical Church. Ray loved to socialize with family and friends. In 1997, Ray and Hedy retired to Medicine Hat and enjoyed their new community. Ray continued to curl until he was 80 years young, was a member of the German Harmony Club and Kiwanis Club. Ray and Hedy enjoyed travelling in their RV, bus tours, cruises and trips to Germany to visit Hedy’s family. Ray and Hedy moved to Saskatoon in 2014 to be closer to Grace. They were welcomed and were known as the “Love Birds”. They enjoyed their outings to the theatre, river cruises, parks and the local German club. After Hedy’s death, Ray’s dementia progressed and he moved to Oliver Lodge in 2018. Ray enjoyed his new home and was well received and taken good care of by the staff. He maintained his sense of humour and teasing. He played cribbage & solitaire with Grace while enjoying his chocolate milkshake. He knew his family to the end. A celebration of Ray’s life will be held at Hillcrest Church in Medicine Hat Saturday March 4-2023 at 11:00 am with Rev. Michael Deibert. Lunch to follow. Private family interment. In lieu of flowers, honour Ray’s memory to the charity of your choice.

ANDY RODDICK
ANDY RODDICK September 25, 1938 ~ February 16, 2023 ‘Those we love don’t go away, they walk beside us every day’
Andrew William ‘Andy’ Roddick, beloved husband of Patricia, passed away at St. Joseph’s Home – Carmel Hospice in Medicine Hat on Thursday, February 16, 2023, at the age of 84 years. Along with Pat, Andy is survived by their son, Drew (Della); grandson, Grayson; brother, Hugh (Diana) Roddick and their family; sister, Nancy (John) Francis and their family as well as his pets, Teddy and Bismarck. He was predeceased by his parents, Bill and Audrey Roddick. Andy left home as a teenager (because of an abusive father) and hitchhiked across Canada. Near Medicine Hat, he was offered a ride and then a job. Andy worked on a ranch and also a job on the farm of Tom and Dick Bassett. While employed at Lauder’s Cycle, he learned how to repair bicycles. One of Andy’s friends offered to introduce him to a boarder living with her mother – a gal named Patricia, who recently moved to Medicine Hat to work in the hospital laboratory. They met, dated, he met her loving and caring parents and then they were married. Later, their son, Drew, was born. Andy had various jobs driving truck. He tried driving cross country in a big rig and did not like it as it was too much time on the road and not enough time at home. He also hauled clay from the Elkwater area into the Brick and Tile and was home every night. Then came the offer from Revelstoke Concrete (now Inland Concrete) which was within the city and the surrounding area. Pat continued working within the hospital laboratory and retired after 35 years. A year later, Andy also retired after working for 27 years. Because his job took him to the local Hutterite colonies, Andy and Pat became friends with both Spring Creek and Elkwater colonies. When Andy’s sister and husband visited from Ottawa, they both were welcomed. Andy helped butcher a flock of geese that were prepared for freezing and later eating. They also attended several wedding shivarees. Andy’s hobbies varied. He enjoyed woodworking and once apprenticed as a finishing carpenter. He took classes in scuba diving at an indoor pool. Trips on long weekends to Waterton followed and he bought a dry suit for the cold water. But the best were the three trips to Hawaii. The water was warm and Andy said the sound of whales from under the water was not to be missed. On one of the trips, he went pig hunting in Maui. The guide, Troy, led him into the countryside through marijuana patches and his dogs found the pigs. Once attacked, the dogs (perhaps they were munching on the crops) were gored but they did get the pig. Andy stayed with the dog while Troy went down to get help carrying the dog to the vet. Help returned, and the dog and the pig were hauled out (dog had 300 stitches and the pig was proudly displayed in a photo). With his friendship with Alf Baldwin, Andy became interested in black powder shooting. They had started with ‘modern’ weaponry but this presented more of a challenge. Together they worked with others to find land and then the help to construct the range just outside the city. Long weekends had competitions for shooters within Alberta and also Montana. Bullhook Bottoms in Havre was the US May long weekend. The ‘Quigley’ shoot near Yellowstone had shooters from around the world. The shoot in Medicine Hat was the long weekend in May. For these events, some of the participants dressed appropriately, some wore buckskins and Andy had a cavalry sergeants uniform. Rain did not deter them. Buckskins were not that warm, his wool pants and jacket might have been wet but he was still warm. Camping was available at all ranges – tents, pull along trailers and beautiful motorhomes. Once or twice there was a teepee pitched. Andy and Pat preferred the tinteepees in town (a local motel with all the amenities). In 2001, Andy had his first heart attack; luckily it happened in the Emergency Department. His dogs, Bear and Brutus enjoyed his company on their walks by the river. Andy wasn’t so lucky with the second attack in 2014 as his energy level dropped considerably. As time passed by, their ages creeped up and Andy became more of a homebody and needed more help. Their son, Drew, returned from Calgary to offer assistance along with Home Care but the time came when it was not enough. Andy spent the last year at River Ridge and in his final days, was transferred to St. Joseph’s Home. Andy will be silently remembered by family and friends without the proceedings of a formal funeral service. (Condolences may be expressed by visiting our website at

DENNIS COURCHAINE
1950 ~ DENNIS COURCHAINE ~ 2023 Dennis Peter Courchaine passed away at St. Joseph’s Carmel Hospice on February 20, 2023 at the age of 72 years. He is survived by his beloved son, Kevin (Melissa) Holliday of Cochenour, ON; his brother, Hector (Nancy) of Kenora, ON; sister, Carol (Scott) Bailey of Thunder Bay, ON; as well as his best friend, Lou Haag, who was with him through the last of his journey. He will also be remembered by Bonnie and David, the children of his second wife; and several cousins and nieces and nephews. Dennis was also a grandfather and great grandfather. He was predeceased by his father, Peter (February 1995), and his mother, Bertha (Novemeber 2008). Dennis was born in Cocchnour, ON on June 18, 1950 and raised in Balmertown, ON, both in the Red Lake area. He became Dennis the menace at an early age! He didn’t need to look for mischief, it found him! When he was in about grade 10, he moved with his parents to Saskatoon, SK; he attended the university there. During summer break, he went back to Ontario to work at Griffith Iron Ore Mine. He was married and welcomed son, Kevin, May 6, 1975. Later, he remarried and raised Bonnie and David. He worked at David Bell gold mine. He was divorced a second time. When his father became ill, he came to Medicine Hat to help care for him. He worked as a security guard on 5N at MHRH. After his dad passed, he stayed to help and care for his mother; he retired in 2015. Dennis was an avid bowler his entire life until he was bothered with a bad back. Then he would go to the lanes just to watch the old farts try to throw the ball down the lane.
Dennis had a great sense of humour and was very compassionate. He also loved totally when he gave his love to someone. He excelled in school to the point where he was bored a lot of the time as it didn’t challenge him enough. He was involved with the Paralympics in the bowling sector and loved the people he taught and worked with. He was generous with his time taking relatives to appointments, the bank, or shopping; the Frey family just loved him. He put the welfare of others before his own. He was a low-key person, reluctant to draw attention to himself. Dennis loved to watch sports on television! He watched two televisions simultaneously of two different games, that was the Gemini in him. His greatest satisfaction was making people laugh! He would often say, “if he could make at least one person laugh in the day, his day was a success.” He loved to tease, especially his fellow bowlers. A message from Dennis is to enjoy life to the fullest! Don’t let a head pin “strike” you out. Dennis was a good and wonderful man. His family and close friends loved him dearly and he will be sadly missed! Dennis has been cremated. As per his request, there will be no funeral service. Donations can be made to the charity of one’s choice. Thank you to all Doctors, nurses, and the staff at St. Joseph’s hospice along his final journey. Condolences may be sent through
