BETTY LEE SURINA

1962 – BETTY LEE SURINA – 2022 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Betty Lee on December 29th, 2022 at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital. Her loving family was at her side. She is survived by her precious mother, Katherine; her twin sister, Debbie; her wonderful brother-in-law, Lyle Eskestrand; her special nephew, Koby; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends Betty loved you all. She was predeceased by her dear father, Arnie and her nephew, Connor. Betty Lee was born on August 7th, 1962 at the Medicine Hat Hospital. She made a grand entrance weighing only 1 pound and 7.5 ounces. She grew up in Hilda, AB and graduated from Medicine Hat High School. Following that, she enrolled in computer courses and became a meticulous and skilled engraver. She was a dedicated volunteer at several organizations such as MADD and Unisphere. Betty’s passions included reading, music, artwork, as well as reality and Christian television programs. She had a special love for seahorses and a vast collection of everything involving them. She really enjoyed family game nights, baking contests, and watching the “Home Alone” movies over and over with her beloved nephew, Koby. We wish to thank Dr. Jeff Bratvold who was there for our every need. We appreciated you more than words can say. We extend our gratitude to the many medical staff, physicians nurses, paramedics, and health care workers who provided such wonderful care to Betty Lee and her family. ADAM RIES

ADAM RIES 1938 ~ 2022
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Adam John Ries. Adam passed on Wednesday, December 28, 2022 at the age of 84 years. He leaves to cherish his memory his son Raymond (Deanna) Ries, his daughter Christine (Dwayne) Oshowy; grandchildren and great grandchildren: Brett (Tiffany; Lily Rae and Cooper); Dakota (Kiel; Hazel Mae); Jenden (Raelynne); Colton; Ginger and Lyle; one brother Roy and one sister Rose, as well as various nieces and nephews. Adam was predeceased by his parents Joseph and Elizabeth Ries, his wife Lorraine Anne Ries, one son Anthony and one grandson Scott as well as numerous brothers and sisters. Adam passed from this world peacefully with his family at his side. Adam married the love of his life Lorraine in 1961, the same year he started his career with Pioneer Grain. Adam was a loving, loyal husband and father whose family was always his first priority. Adam and Lorraine raised three children and dedicated their lives to providing a safe, happy and nurturing home. Adam spent his entire career with Pioneer Grain working for them for 39 years. Adam enjoyed his retirement in High River, eventually moving to Medicine Hat. Pride in his home, his yard, his vehicles and of course his family, kept Adam engaged and occupied throughout his retirement. Always happy to have friends and family visiting, or just popping in, you were always welcome in Adam and Lorraine’s home. Adam’s passing will leave a hole in the hearts of all who knew him. Family and friends who wish to pay their respects may do so at the PATTISON FUNERAL HOME on Wednesday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. and at the church on Thursday from 10:00 – 10:55 a.m. A tribute to Adam will be given at the church 10 minutes prior to mass time. ED SCHLENKER

ED SCHLENKER 1961 – 2022
Edwin “Ed” Arthur Schlenker of Naramata, B.C. formerly of Medicine Hat, passed away suddenly on December 22, 2022 at the age of 61 years. He leaves to cherish his memory his son Brock Schlenker of Naramata, one sister Monika Wood of Medicine Hat and one brother Tony Schlenker of Grande Prairie; his nephews, Devon Wood (Whitney Kambeitz) of Medicine Hat, Cody (Jessica) Schlenker of Dawson Creek, and his niece Alisha Wood (Evan Bucsis) of Calgary as well as his great nieces and nephews. Ed is also survived by uncles, Ernie Fode of Medicine Hat and Helmut (Erika) Fode of Edmonton; his aunt Erika (Uwe) Lietzau of Germany and several cousins. He was predeceased by his parents, Artur and Alma Schlenker. Ed was born on July 21, 1961, in Medicine Hat and was very active in baseball, hockey and waterskiing with his family. He was a huge Tigers fan from day one and always followed them throughout the years. Ed graduated from CHHS in 1979 and then went on to attend SAIT to become a journeyman carpenter. After several years of construction in the Medicine Hat area, in 1989, he moved to Penticton. He was employed with Greyback Construction and was involved in building major landmarks across the Okanagan. After many years, he decided to go out on his own and started E-Rock Contracting. He specialized in concrete construction and was well respected and sought after for his skilled craftsmanship. He was thrilled to bring his son Brock into the company working together for the last five years. Ed was an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed coming home to do these activities with his closest friends. He also enjoyed having his family and friends come out to visit and stay in the beautifulhouse he built in paradise. Ed will be missed by all who knew and loved him. Family and friends who wish to pay their respects may do so at the PATTISON FUNERAL HOME on Thursday from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. The graveside service will take place at Hillside Cemetery on Thursday, January 5, 2023 at 2:30 p.m. with Life Celebrant, David Townsend officiating. LYLE GLEDDIE

LYLE GLEDDIE 1940 – 2022
Lyle Gene Gleddie of Medicine Hat, beloved husband of Karan Gleddie passed away peacefully on December 29, 2022, at the age of 82 years.
Lyle was born in Medicine Hat on October 7, 1940, and he was raised in Tilley, Alberta. His parents were Trygve and Hedvig Gleddie and he had one older brother, Trevor, and one younger brother, Cyril. The family had a robust farm and ranch with sheep and cattle which Lyle grew up working on.
Lyle attended and graduated from Tilley High School. After high school, he attended Prairie High School, Prairie Bible College, and Mount Royal College. At Mount Royal College, he played football and he was recruited for the Calgary Stampede farm team.
In 1962, Lyle met Karan at Prairie High School. In 1963, they were married, and they had three daughters, Melissa, Vanessa, and Felicia. The family resided at Gleddie Ranches in Tilley until 2000. After 2000, Lyle and Karan moved to various areas before settling in Foremost and more recently Medicine Hat.
Lyle was known for his faith in God, love for music and singing, quick wit and sense of humor, and cattle ranching expertise. He spent years crafting his Red Angus cattle herd with his specialized training in genetics and artificial insemination. When he was not thinking about cattle, his interests involved spending time with his family, attending church, and singing in quartets and choirs.
Besides his wife, Lyle Gleddie is survived by his children, Melissa (and Jerry) Steeves, Vanessa Kurtzweg, and Felicia (and Sebastian) Bloem. He had many grandchildren, as follows: Bryce (and Jackie) Steeves; Ashley (and Eric) Bateman; Chad (and Julie) Steeves; Caitlyn (and Tim) Aitken; Colton (and Jaelynn) Kurtzweg; and Karina Kurtzweg. He also had ten great grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held in the PATTISON CHAPEL on Friday, January 6, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Murray Jaster officiating. The service will be live streamed. PAUL RICHTER 1925 ~ 2022
Paul Richter passed away on Saturday, December 31 , 2022 at the age of 97 years, beloved husband of Christel Richter of Medicine Hat.
Paul was born in Maraslienfeld, Bessarabia to parents, Reinhold and Lydia Richter. His family left Bessarabia, eventually settling in Germany where he met a beauty, Christel Kort, and they were married 71 years ago. A year later, daughter one, Cornelia (aka Coni) was born and shortly after the family immigrated to Canada, residing in Medicine Hat. A year after resettling, daughter two, Gisela, was born and completed the family.
Dad worked more than 20 years in the Housekeeping Department of the Medicine Hat General Hospital as it was known then. To this day he still calls it “his hospital”. He was amazing, kind, generous to a fault and gentle; his contagious smile won so many hearts. He loved his family unconditionally, and shared the story of Christ’s love to all.
His hobbies included fishing, hiking and camping every summer. He was in his mid-80’s when he went on his last hike up and down Sulphur Mountain in Banff. Gardening was therapeutic for him and the envy of many.
Besides his loving wife, Paul is survived by his children Coni (John) Christo, and their children Kevin (April) Christo, and Opa’s sweetheart great-granddaughter, Kinley; and Sheena (Jim) Slobodian; daughter, Gisela (Vince) Mullan, and their daughter Carrera (Mitch) Kostur. He is also survived by one brother, Rudy (Marlene) Richter; as well as three sisters-in-law and four brothers-in-law.
Paul was predeceased by his parents, Reinhold and Lydia Richter, two brothers, two sisters and six sisters-in-law and six brothers-in-law.
For viewing and the funeral service, masks are mandatory for all nonresidents of South Country Village. Family and friends are invited to pay their respects between 1:30 pm and 2:25 pm on Thursday January 5, 2023 at the Wuerfel Auditorium (South Country Village, 1720 Bell Street SW). The funeral service will be held in the Wuefrel Auditorium, on Thursday, January 5, 2023 at 2:30 p.m. with Pastor Murray Jaster officiating. The service will be live streamed.
