CARTER, David Joseph (1948 2022) Peacefully and surrounded by his family, David J. Carter passed away on November 27, 2022. David leaves to cherish his memory his wife Karen; his daughters Jennifer (Sean), Allison (Kevin), Meredith (Jacob), and Shannon (Paul); his grandchildren Charles, Solenn, Callum, Simon, and Isaac; his mother Phyllis; his siblings Philip, Hugh (Donna), John, Mark (Linda), Tim, Elizabeth (Alex) and Margo (Mark) and their families; his sister-in-law Joanne and his close friends. David was predeceased by his father Albert, his mother-in-law Joan, his brother-in-law Marty, and his granddaughter Nora.
The eldest of eight, David was raised in St. Catharines, Ontario. He obtained an undergraduate degree from the University of New Brunswick and a master’s degree in Political Science from the University of Calgary.
David and Karen were married in 1971 and moved that year to Medicine Hat where he taught Political Science and Canadian History for two years at the Medicine Hat College. David then worked on Parliament Hill before completing a law degree at Queen’s University. After he articled in High River, they returned to Medicine Hat.
He was active in the community, serving on many boards and committees, including the Ethics Committee for Palliser Health, the United Way, the Women’s Shelter Society, REDI Enterprises and the Community Foundation of Southeastern Alberta. David was a member of the Alberta Bar for 45 years. In Medicine Hat he was a Crown Prosecutor before moving to private practice, spending many years with Sihvon Carter Fisher & Berger. In 2011, he began a solo practice and was thrilled when his daughter Shannon joined him.
Throughout his life, David was intensely curious about the world. He had a lifelong passion for reading and learning, amassing a large collection of books on an array of topics, especially political history. He would regularly send article clippings to family members that they would find interesting. He enjoyed art and music, often whistling tunes around the house and at times joined local musical theatre productions and choirs. He also enjoyed travelling, touring Europe, Africa, and North America. Family holidays in Montana and Kauai are special memories.
David’s often serious demeanor was peppered with his quick wit and sense of humour. His family will remember him as a loving husband, father, and grandfather.
At David’s insistence, no memorial will be held. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Community Foundation of Southeastern Alberta or the Canadian Cancer Society.
Our family would like to thank Loretta Hammel for her many years of invaluable help, as well as Dr. Mohanraj, the Tom Baker Cancer Centre, Dr. Jeraj and the staff at St. Joseph’s for their compassionate care.
