JULIA HABERLACK

1928 ~ JULIA HABERLACK ~ 2022
Julia Haberlack passed away on Thursday, November 10th, 2022 at the age of 94 years. Julia leaves to cherish her memory her children, Rod (Dolly) Haberlack, Arlene (Mike) Keck and Mary (Clarence Deck) Haberlack; daughter-in-law, Tania Haberlack-Dolan (Justin); grandchildren, Ryan (Meagan) Haberlack, Derek (Tanis) Haberlack, Ian (Danielle) Haberlack, Kris (Rhea) Keck, Jeff Keck, Cole Haberlack; Bob (Amanda) and Brendon (Heather) Deck, Connor and Aiden Dolan; great grandchildren, Sullivan, Lewis, Iris, Austin, Peyton, Hatchett, Gemma, Chase and Brooklyn; sisters, Irene Cote, Katie Lutz and Lavina Slobodin, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Julia was predeceased by her parents, Martin and Sophie Reinheller; her husband, Fred Haberlack; son, Vernon Haberlack (2007); brothers, Benny (Esther) Reinheller and Albert Reinheller. Julia (Reinheller) Haberlack was born January 31, 1928 to Sophie and Martin Reinheller and was raised on their family farm south of Richmound, Sk. Julia was the eldest daughter in a family of six. She attended Dunbrody School where she enjoyed learning and playing softball (while wearing a dress and without a ball glove). Unfortunately, she had to leave school at about the age of 12 to help take care of her mother during an illness and her younger siblings. Julia and Fred were married Nov 1, 1952 and lived on the Haberlack family farm in Saskatchewan for a short time before moving to Richmound, SK. in the summer of 1953, where they began their family. In 1982, Fred retired from his position as a grain buyer for Pioneer Grain and they moved to Medicine Hat. At that time, they were able to enjoy their grandchildren, most of who lived in the Medicine Hat area. Those days were happy days, especially the Christmases with all the kids and grandkids. Mom enjoyed spending time with her siblings. Her two brothers and three sisters had a regular coffee afternoon date at the Co- op mall. On many occasions her children, nieces and nephews would join their coffee parties, sharing many funny family stories and much laughter. Mom had a number of interests and hobbies but mostly enjoyed watching her kids play sports, especially curling and baseball, where she cheered on her two sons playing for the Richmound Rockets. She also loved to cook and bake. She cooked many turkeys and baked lots of pies for the church when they hosted weddings, funerals, or for the fall supper at the church. Mom passed her driver’s licence in 1989 at the age of 61. She took up the game of golf at the age of 75 and played until she was 85. She enjoyed many rounds of golf with her kids and all six of her grandsons. She loved watching curling, always rooting for Brad Gushue and Kevin Koe. Of course, she rarely missed a game of Blue Jays Baseball either. She taught herself to play the guitar, organ and omnichord and spent many hours playing and singing. She was known as the candy lady in Richmound. Many children would stop at our home each day for candy or treats. Over the years she became a second mom to many kids from the area, some of whom lived with us for short periods of time. She was a very caring and loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother, always happy to see family and friends whenever they stopped by for a visit. Her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
In June 2020, Mom moved to Haven of Rest, the day before Covid lockdown, which was so very hard on so many people. Mom was very well looked after by Dr. Jeraj and we are grateful for the care he gave. Mom befriended many of the wonderful staff at the Haven of Rest. She would have wanted us to send a joke, a hug and a big thank you to all her caregivers. Thank you all for caring for our mother. She lived there until her passing, surrounded by her children. There will be a private Graveside Service held at Hillside Cemetery. Memorial gifts in Julia’s memory may be made to the Alberta Heart & Stroke Foundation, PO Box 460 STN K, Toronto, ON M4P 9Z9.
