DIXIE JOHNSON
DIXIE JOHNSON 1936 – 2022 Vivian Jean Johnson, beloved wife of Garry Johnson, passed away peacefully into the arms of her Lord and Saviour, surrounded by her family, on Friday, November 4, 2022 at the age of 86 years.
A private burial service will be held at the Burdett Cemetery prior to the funeral service on Tuesday, November 15, 2022.

Dixie leaves to cherish her memory, her beloved husband Garry and their two sons Greg Johnson of Burdett and Darren (Alanna) Johnson of Bow Island and by her nine grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren; sister Peggy Brown, sisters-in-law Sheila Bjerkseth, Deanna Dutton and by numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her beloved daughter Wendy, her parents Jean and Dick Towndrow, step mother Helen Towndrow, by her aunt Nellie Towndrow and also by her brothers-in-law Chuck Brown, Joe Bjerkseth and John Dutton.
Dixie was born on August 23, 1936 in Cupar, Saskatchewan. She had one sister Peggy. Dixies’s dad went off to war in 1939 leaving Jean to raise the two girls on her own. Dixie said her mom did a fine job of working and being a mom. She attended school in Regina and after graduation, she entered nursing school at the Regina Grey Nuns Hospital for three years, graduating in 1958. In 1959, Dixie came by bus to Bow Island. What a shock it was coming from a big city to a small town but she loved nursing! In 1960 she married the love of her life Garry Johnson and in 1962 she decided to leave nursing and make a home for her family, eventually having three children.
Dixie struggled with epilepsy from the age of sixteen until her passing. With determination she was able to cope with this thanks to the support of her loving family. Dixie was a volunteer and helped wherever she could, canvassing and being a member of the Women’s Institute since 1985. She enjoyed quilting, crocheting, reading and spending time with her numerous grandchildren.
Dixie had many memorable trips with family that included Disneyland; Phoenix; a memorable trip to the Maritimes with Garry, her sister-in-law Sheila and brother-in-law Joe; an Alaskan cruise; and a three week trip to Europe with her sister Peggy, brother-in-law Chuck and her Dad. Dixie and Gary fostered and sponsored many children throughout the years.
She was at peace with her Lord knowing she was created by him and knowing how much he loved her.
If friends so desire, memorial tributes in Dixie’s name may be made directly to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Alberta, 100, 119 – 14 Street NW, Calgary, Alberta T2N 1Z6 (www.heartandstroke.com) or to the Southern Alberta Bible Camp, Box 99, Lomond, Alberta T0L 1G0.

It is with deepest sadness that we announce our Dad’s passing on November 05, 2022 at the age of 93 years. Dad was predeceased by our mom, Estelle, in 2014. He leaves to cherish his memory his daughters, Linda (Barrey) Stuber, Debbie (Philip) Gazdag, Dar Wegner, and son, Allan Mutschler. He is also lovingly remembered by his grandchildren, Trevor (Desirae), Travis (Laura), Kim, Neil (Jaclyn), Jody (Bill), Stacy (Jen), Curtis (Amanda), Kaylie, as well as nine great grandchildren. Dad is survived by his sisters, Eileen, Gladys, and Joan, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Lloyd.
Dad was born in Fox Valley, SK, and it was there he met Estelle Hepper, whom he married in 1952. They farmed there until moving to Medicine Hat in 1956. Dad was employed by North West Nitro Chemicals for ten years where he became a 3rd Class Steam Engineer. In 1966, Dad, Mom and four kids moved to the Manyberries area where they farmed and ranched until 1991. He was a co-owner and played an integral part in the creation and operation of Lost River Construction Ltd. Dad and Mom semi-retired to an acreage, then moved into Medicine Hat. After Mom’s passing, Dad lived independently in a senior’s residence.
During his youth, Dad was an avid baseball player and his love of the game continued as he played senior slow pitch into his eighties. Curling was also a favourite pastime of his, and Mom’s. Dad was also a leader of our 4-H Beef Club for eleven years. Our steers were chosen from our own herd and he was very proud when several went on to become champions. Dad also served on the Board of Directors for Pinhorn Grazing Association for twenty-five years.
Dad and Mom belonged to the Orion Community Association and spent many hours preparing for the dine and dances that they enjoyed so much. They loved to dance and we are so thankful that Dad was still dancing at ninety-three. He will be forever missed and lovingly remembered. ELIZABETH BRAAT
BRAAT
ELIZABETH BRAAT of Coaldale, Alberta passed away on Saturday, November 5, 2022 at St. Therese Villa at the age of 91.
Bep Koot was born on January 28th, 1931 in Reeuwyk, Holland. Although she was born and raised on a dairy farm, she never milked a cow. She was the dedicated cheesemaker in the family until she was 30 years old. She always told the family she was going to Canada and in 1961, she married John Braat, who had immigrated to Canada in 1953 and was already farming there. Without knowing any English and being a homebody, she followed her new husband on a great adventure to a new land in Coaldale, Alberta. With encouragement, she got her driver’s license and kept very busy raising four daughters born within six years and being dad’s helper on the farm. The coffee was always on and homemade treats were on the table almost instantly. Meals cooked from scratch were on the table on time, the girls were dressed well in mom’s home sewn clothes, the house was in order and the flower beds looked good. Mom learned to milk the cow and stack hay by hand and drive tractor. She was very strong in body and mind and worked hard. Her hands were always moving as she found time to be creative in sewing, knitting, crocheting, making rosaries and many other crafting projects. She loved sharing these projects with the grandchildren and St. Ambrose CWL and anyone else who admired them. If you complimented a toque she had made, the next week, she had one made for you too. What she enjoyed most was the family get-togethers around a table of delicious food and grandchildren sleepovers. Mom and Dad were a great farming team until 2013, when they retired into Coaldale. Dad passed away in 2014 after 53 years together.
Bep is survived by her four daughters Joanne Harris (Dave), Mary Horst (Murray), Elsie Friesen and Wilma Braat (Etienne Poulin), her grandchildren Melissa, John, Adam, Jacqueline, Peter, Mary and Dorothy, and her great-grandchildren Hadley and Otto, her sister Nel, her brothers Piet, Dirk, Hank (Ann) Koot, in-laws Mildred Braat, Jake (Shirley) Braat, Fritz (Lisa) Braat, and Case (Katy) Braat.
She is predeceased by husband John, her brothers Jan (Mien) and Andre (Nel) and sisters Reit (Martien) and Mien (Toon), in-laws Riet Koot, Janny Koot, and Jan Houdijk, Morris and Jane Braat, Peter Braat, Gerry Braat, and Joanne Braat.
A sincere heartfelt thankyou to Eric and Josie and all the staff in the dementia unit of St. Therese who cared for mom and took the time to discover her sense of humor.
A Prayer Service will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME, 2825 32 Street South, Lethbridge, on Wednesday, Nov 16th, at 7:00 P.M. with Deacon Cliff Bogdan officiating.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. AMBROSE CATHOLIC CHURCH, 1513 23rd Ave, Coaldale, AB, on Thursday, November 17th, 2022 at 11:00 A.M. with Father Ian Gagne celebrating. Interment at the Coaldale Cemetery to follow.
