1932 – HENRY STRAUSS – 2022 Celebrating the life of Henry Gustav Strauss, we as a family announce that at the age of 90 years, Henry passed away peacefully on Saturday August 13, 2022, with family at his side in Medicine Hat, Alberta. He was predeceased by Loretta, his loving wife of 65 years, who passed away in 2019. He is survived by four of his five children: Neil (Judy) Strauss, Brian (Cheryl) Strauss, Kathy (Ralph) Korner and Karla (Gerrit) Vermeer. He was predeceased by his daughter, Lynnetta, in 2012. He was blessed with nine grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren, many nieces, and nephews – all who brought love and joy to his life. He valued God’s faithfulness to his family and their desire to follow God in footsteps of faith. Henry is survived by his loving sister, Ella Binder of Langley, BC. and her children Arlene (Roland) Poehlke and Rodney (Leanne) Binder and families. Henry was born July 4, 1932, to Ed and Selma Strauss at Sandy Point, Alberta, near Burstall, Saskatchewan, where he was raised on the farm with his sister, Ella. He was predeceased by his parents and stepmother’s Lydia and Inge., which expanded our family with the blessing of even more siblings and relatives. Henry accepted Jesus as his personal Savior at the age of 12. He attended the one room school at Sandy Point. He continued with junior schooling in Medicine Hat and advanced studies at CTI (Christian Training Institute) in Edmonton. It was at CTI that Dad met and married his life partner, Loretta. They worked in Edmonton for one year before moving to the farm at Sandy Point where they developed their farming enterprise. In 1977, they moved into Medicine Hat to pursue other employment while continuing involvement with the expanding farm business. Many have experienced Henry’s gift of leadership in the community and church families that he served both in Hilda and Medicine Hat. He was a friend and mentor to many. He was not one to sit still. He loved to travel with Loretta. Their adventures took them across Canada, many parts of the USA, Africa, Cuba, Israel, Mexico, Panama Canal, Alaska, and Hawaii. He and Loretta so enjoyed living their last years with the condo community at Heritage Heights. He was a loving and faithful husband to Loretta. Henry was a solid Christian example as a father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He invested in his family and was committed to encouraging each one to become their very best. Henry was a kind, steady, thoughtful, humorous, and committed man. He was loved by many and will be greatly missed, but his influence lives on. Family and friends who wish to pay their respects may do so at the PATTISON FUNERAL HOME on Friday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. A celebration of Henry’s life will take place at Temple Baptist Church (606 7th Street SW) on Saturday, August 20, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Dr. Ed Lehman officiating. Private interment will take place at Prairie View Cemetery. The service will be live streamed. 1953 ~ LORNA McLEAN ~ 2022 Lorna McLean of Medicine Hat, passed away on Sunday, August 14th, 2022 at the age of 69 years. She leaves to cherish her memory her children, Andrew (Paige) McLean and Paul McLean; grandchildren, Aidan, Caitlyn, Carter, and Sadie; brother, Maurice (Anne) Finlay; as well as numerous nephews and nieces. ARTHUR "RAY" SKOW August 22, 1947 – August 16, 2022 Life is a journey filled with many unexpected adventures. Our BELOVED husband, father and grandfather, Arthur “Ray” Skow, completed his journey on Tuesday, August 16, 2022, surrounded by the love of his family.
He is survived by “the LOVE of his life”, Arlene (Wagner); his Children: Kimberley (Daniel) Hutton, Tanya (Mark) Johnson and Dane (Melissa) Skow. His Grandchildren: Daxen, Ronen, and Teyla Skow; Owen, Paul, and Ava Hutton; and Ethan and Jessica (son Avery) Johnson. He is also survived by one sister, Eleanor Higgins and numerous nieces and nephews. Ray was predeceased by his parents, Arlene’s parents, one sister and 2 brothers-in-law.
Ray’s greatest treasures were his family, including Arlene’s brothers: Mervin (Joyce) Wagner and Glen (Gloria) Wagner and their children and grandchildren…with special memories shared with their Goddaughter, Sherry Gauthier. We also would like to thank his Wednesday coffee buddies: Eddie, Bobby, and Jim. He valued their ‘meetings’.
Ray was involved in Special Education with MHSD #76 for 32 years. He taught in the classroom, was head of the PAS Program, head of IOP Program, Work Experience and finally worked with the Hospital Program. His motto was, “There is no excuse for poor behavior.”.
The Skow family attended St. Peter Lutheran Church and Victory Lutheran Church. Ray enjoyed his involvement with many activities and positions over the many years.
Retirement meant travelling and they bought a 5th Wheel Trailer on their first day of freedom. Many trips were made including, Grand Canyon, South Dakota, Indiana, Vancouver Island, Washington State, and finally…Alaska (the favorite). Ray and Arlene also flew to Puerto Vallarta, Cancun, and Mazatlan and enjoyed the sunshine near the Equator.

years were a difficult time for Ray and his family. He had successfully beat cancer 13 years ago, but it reoccurred in 2021 and after a painful journey, he left us and the pain and found his PEACE.
After almost 55 years of marriage and making a lifetime of treasured memories, Arlene will complete her journey alone, having Ray forever in her heart.
The family will gather privately to celebrate Ray at a future date.

DON GUNDERSON 1953 ~ 2022 Mr. Donald Wayne Gunderson, beloved husband of Mary, passed away at St. Joseph’s Home-Carmel Hospice in Medicine Hat on Saturday, August 13, 2022, at the age of 69 years. Don was born on March 30, 1953, in Seattle, Washington and the family moved to Kamloops, B.C., when he was a young boy. He married the love of his life, Mary Prins on November 12, 1982, in Whitehorse, YT. Don worked for a number of years with Rio Tinto Alcan Kitimat and Yukon Electric in Whitehorse. He was fun loving, humorous and a caring husband and father. Don was an avid motorcycle enthusiast and enjoyed time camping, hunting and fishing. He could always be heard cheering on his favorite hockey team, the Calgary Flames. Don’s memory will be forever treasured in the hearts of his wife, Mary; mother, Evelyn; children, Christopher and Donald (Nicole); grandchildren, D.J., Tanner and Kassandra; siblings, Jim, Gord, Ken, Karen and Sharon as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Don was pre-deceased by his father, Alvin. A Celebration of Life will be announced at a future date. ELIZABETH SCHOTTNER 1931 ~ 2022 Elizabeth ‘Liz’ Schottner passed away peacefully at the Age Care Valleyview on Friday, August 12, 2022, at the age of 90 years. Liz leaves to cherish her memory: children, Ursula, Harry (Diane) and Karyn (Alex); grandchildren, Cliffe, Mikey, Shane, Troy (Justina), Amber (Jordan); great-grandchildren, Nathan, Lukas, Alicia, Riley, Sydney and MaKenzie as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her first husband, Erhart Schafer as well as her second husband, Louis Schottner. Elizabeth Schottner was born on December 10, 1931, in the Czech Republic. Her family was one of many that immigrated to Canada by boat, a long journey that took many months. On December 13, 1952, Liz met her husband to be, Erhart Schafer. They worked as a team on their farm and at the butcher shop. Liz was a very hard worker, but she also enjoyed her leisure time. She enjoyed the excitement of going out to dances as well as the peaceful serenity of tending to her garden. Talented at many things, one of Liz’s skills that certainly stood out was her ability as a seamstress. She enjoyed 24 wonderful years with Erhart before his passing on August 18, 1978. In 1998, Liz remarried starting a new life’s journey with Louis Schottner. This is also around the time that she accepted a custodial position with the Catholic School Board, continuing to work with them until her eventual retirement. The celebration of Liz’s life will be held at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, 901 – 13 Street S.W., Medicine Hat on Thursday, August 18, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. with Life Celebrant Gerry Getz officiating. Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery.
