Donald Vernon Gill of Medicine Hat, beloved husband of the late Shirley Gill, passed away on Wednesday, February 16th, 2022 at the age of 93 years. Donald leaves to cherish his memory his children, Jim (Linda) Gill, June (Oscar) Saulit, Lorna Gill (Kris Eldred), and Jerrold Gill; grandchildren, Lindsay Johnson, Tara Gottselig, Kendra Gill, Curtis, Gill, Matthew Poirer, and Amber Mogus; eight great-grandchildren; as well as brother, Bill (Kim). 1932 – RUDOLPH FIKOWSKI – 2022

Rudolph “Ruddy” Fikowski passed away on Saturday, February 19, 2022 at the age of 89 years, beloved husband of Edna Fikowski of Medicine Hat. He also leaves to cherish his memory three children, Steven (Michaelle) Fikowski, Susan (Stanley) Getz, and Russell (Lenore) Fikowski; five grandchildren; and four great grandchildren. Winfried Riechelmann of Medicine Hat passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 19, 2022 at the age of 85 years. NORMA MARION NELSON

Norma passed away gently on February 14, 2022 at the age of 96 years. She was predeceased by her parents Samuel Charles (1939) and Inger Marie (1953), one brother, Orville Gilbraith (1960), and one niece, Geraldine Elizabeth (2006). She is survived by one niece, Jacklynne; two great nieces, April Telek and Leslie (Michael) Brooks all of North Vancouver.
Norma was born in Edmonton, Alberta, and received her elementary and junior high education in Thorhild, Alberta, and high school in Medicine Hat. After completing Normal School in Calgary she taught in two rural divisions – Red Deer School Division No. 3 and Medicine Hat School Division No. 4, each for one year.
In 1946, Norma joined the Medicine Hat School District No. 76. She greatly appreciated the privilege and opportunity to be a classroom teacher and second vice Principal at Connaught School, Principal of Elizabeth Street School and Central Park School, over a period of 35 years.
Norma was an active member of Fifth Avenue Memorial United Church as the Chair of the Outreach Committee and the United Church Women.

For 15 years, Norma was the organizer and general manager of what is now The Root Cellar, which had its beginning in Fifth Avenue United Church. She organized and was dedicated to many groups in her church and in the community. Norma counselled and supported numerous individuals throughout her life. If someone was in need, there was Norma’s helping hand.
In 1987, she was the recipient of the “Honored Educators’ Award” from the Medicine Hat School District No. 76, and her name was added to the Honor Roll of Education.
In 1997, Norma was awarded the “Community Service Medal”. This award was presented for her significant contribution to Canada, her community and to fellow Canadians.

HEINZ, HERBERT

March 21, 1930 – February 13, 2022
It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden and unexpected passing of Herb Heinz on Sunday, February 13, 2022 at the age of 91. Born in March of 1930, Herb spent most of his formative years in Medicine Hat, Alberta. He married the love of his life, Norma, in November 1950 and together they moved, with their three children, to Calgary in 1955. Herb worked for over 30 years at Cana Construction (Burns & Dutton), retiring as Equipment Controller. He loved to drive, travel and meet new people. He drove almost coast to coast and travelled to many countries, including the U.S, Africa, France and the Caribbean islands. He has lived the last 5 years at the Rocky Ridge Retirement Community, where he was well-loved by residents and staff alike. He will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by his wife, Norma, his children and their families, Don and Marilyn Heinz of Canmore, Kathy Heinz of Vancouver, Debbie & Paul LeBlanc of Cochrane; his grandchildren Travis (Nicky) Heinz, Alexis Heinz, Candace Heinz, Randy (Chelsea) LeBlanc and 5 great grandchildren. Herb was predeceased by his step-brothers Bill, Harry and Elroy Heinz, step-sisters Ella Rinder and Edna Heinz and his son, Keith Heinz. A celebration of Herb's life will be held at a later date. Ken Petro passed away on February 18th, 2022, at the age of 71 years. He is survived by his mother, Mary Petro; wife, Barb Petro; son, John Petro; stepsons, Richard (Nettie) McInnis and Bob (Cara) McInnis; daughters, Lindsay Petro (Daine Schneider) and Cheryl (Tommy) Kneebone; grandchildren, Kesia, Aisen, Lexi and Tirioin; three great- grandchildren; brother, Tim (Deb) Petro; sister, Linne Radford; numerous nieces. Ken is predeceased by his father, James Petro.
Ken was born and raised in Taber, Alberta. He worked for CP Rail for 30+ years as a conductor and engineer. Ken enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, guns and loved music.

MacKenzie, Donald John (Don)

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of this very special, beloved man.
He will be forever loved and remembered by his devoted wife, Joan (nee Parry); daughters, Joanne Howard (John), Susan Fields, son David MacKenzie (Barb); grandchildren Daniel Fields (Misha), Katie Howard, Mac Howard, Liam MacKenzie, Towyn MacKenzie, and great grandchildren, Knoxx and Maddoxx Fields.
Don spent his young life on a farm and ranch on the “British Block” until the land was expropriated for the war efforts. From grade 8 on, Don enjoyed an education at Medicine Hat instead of the one-room schoolhouse. Don went to Olds School of Agriculture obtained a University of Manitoba B Sc. In Agriculture. After a stint in the army, Don went back to University in California, Berkeley (with his young family in tow) and graduated with his Degree in Business Administration.
Don was the Professional Business Administrator in the Chemistry Department of the University of Alberta for 25 years.
Don’s family would like to express gratitude to Villa Marguerite (West Wing) and Misercordia Hospital (7 West) for their extraordinary care and kindness to our husband and father.
