DELLA ANN STANDELL

1948 – 2021

Loving mother, grandmother, wife, sister, friend, and avid golfer. Her round began July 24, 1948 and her front nine saw her grow up in Calgary, completing high school at Crescent Heights before she began work at Alberta Pacific Grain. Inspired by the character from TV’s Perry Mason, she began her working career as a secretary, following in the footsteps of her namesake “Della Street” on the show. The Grain company was where she met her future golfing companion and husband, Jim. A love match that spanned more than 50 years of marriage, producing two sons, D.J. (Kristie), and Jeff (Tish), and four grandchildren, Terryanne, Katelynn, Kyra, and Isaac. With their two young sons in tow, the now family foursome moved to Medicine Hat to begin the rest of the round. Della shared her talents as a teacher’s aide for 20 years in various classrooms. Students would know when she got to school when her trusty Toyota, Betsy would backfire, signaling her arrival. Watching their sons grow, Della and Jim were involved in minor hockey, school band programs, and of course, the junior golf program at Connaught Golf Course. Dubbed “the Iron Maiden”, Della brought her formidable passion to the golf course and made a lasting impression on a generation of junior golfers. With her sons leaving the nest to begin their own journeys, Della looked forward to a retirement that would be filled with grandchildren, travel, adventures, and more golfing. Her “back nine” of life did not go as planned, as a myriad of health issues began to surface and take their toll. Through it all, however, Grandma remained “the controller”, and her family will fondly remember many family events with coordinated outfits, too many pictures, and not enough cheesecake. Through it all, her husband remained steadfastly by her side and they enjoyed as much as life had to offer as they could. She finished up on the 18th hole on Nov 26, 2021, then proceeded directly to the pro-shop upstairs for some shopping.
Della is survived by her husband, Jim; sons, D.J and Jeff; sister, Karen; nephew, Rob; siblings, Murray and Fay. A private family ceremony will take place on December 2nd, 2021 and a celebration of Della’s life will take place in the spring of 2022 at Connaught Golf Course. The family would like to thank the staff at Sunnyside Nursing home, Medicine Hat Regional Hospital staff from ER and 4West. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Connaught Golf Course, Sunnyside Nursing Home, and the Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter. Condolences may be made at http://www.gracememorial.com.
