1928 – ALBERT HERRMANN – 2021

With gratitude and sadness, the family of Albert Herrmann wishes to announce his peaceful passing on Saturday October 23, 2021, just 82 days after Albert’s beloved wife Elma passed. His surviving children were at his side when he left this world. Albert was predeceased by his wife of over 65 years, Elma, in August 2021. He was also predeceased by his son Wayne Herrmann in April 2020. Albert is survived by his children Ronda Herrmann-Stickel (Gordon Stickel), Murray Herrmann (Corie Schock) and Marilyn Herrmann (John Stodalka). He leaves to cherish his memory, seven grandchildren, five step grandchildren, five great grandchildren and nine step great grandchildren: Cassandra Saubak and her daughter Eleanor; Travis Saubak, his wife Jenn Remai and children Hudson and Hannah; Chris Herrmann, his wife Katherine Herrmann and their children Madison, Lane and Harper; Ashley Herrmann and her friend Monty Ehret; Paul Stodalka and his friend, Kirsten Hill; Ty Herrmann and his friend Shelby Johnson, and Bailey Herrmann and her friend Liam Morris; Brett Stickel, his friend Diana Clark and children Ryan and Dylan; Bryce Stickel, his wife Sara and children Levi and Payton; Erin Cornet, her husband Josh and their children Seth and Tully; Mark Stodalka, his wife Angela and their children Paige, Alison and Haylee; Drew Stodalka and his wife Avery.

Also surviving Albert are three sisters, Ella VanMaarion of Medicine Hat, Eva (Dave) Knock of Niagara Falls, Ontario and Bernice Gyorkos of Medicine Hat, three sisters-in-law, Pat Herrmann and Darlene Herrmann both of Medicine Hat, and Millie Desjardine of Grand Bend, Ontario. He was predeceased by his parents John and Emma Herrmann and his siblings Victor Herrmann, Clarence Herrmann, Alfred (Marg) Herrmann, Denden Herrmann, Anne (Gilbert) Becker and Edward Herrmann.

Albert was a devoted and loyal husband to Elma, a stern but supportive father and an easy going and kind grandfather. He was raised on the family farm in between Schuler and Medicine Hat, and continued farming in the area when he ventured out on his own, with Elma at his side. He was hardworking and had a vision to create a home for his bride and eventually their children. Albert and Elma built a prosperous farming operation which has had an indelible affect on each one of his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Albert made an attempt to retire from farming, but farmers like him never really retire. Even at 93, he was still interested in the crop, the weather, the prices of cattle at the sales and the new ways of farming.

Albert saved a number of quotes and sayings that were meaningful to him over the years. This one seemed to be most fitting of the life he built with Elma over the years:
Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success.

Albert and Elma came together in 1955 with hope and optimism. They stayed together for over 65 years. They worked together and made their life a success. They stood by each other through the good times and the hard times. Albert’s descendants are ever so grateful for the foundation they built and the legacy they left.

For family and friends are invited to pay their respects at the PATTISON FUNERAL HOME on Thursday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Masks are mandatory. Due to the restrictions brought forward by the Chief Medical Officer of Health, indoor public gatherings are to be kept to 50 people . LUKE HILSENDAGER

September 23, 1932 ~ October 16, 2021

Luke Hilsendager passed away at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital on Saturday, October 16, 2021, at the age of 89 years. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife Verna as well as his 5 children. Randy (Marina), Cheryl (Darcy) Thoreson, Michelle (Alvin) Miller, Rick (Peggy) and Debbie (Ian) MacGillivray. His memory will also be cherished in the hearts of his 14 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren, soon to be nine. Luke was very proud of his grandchildren and he could always make the babies smile. Luke is survived by his 2 brothers, Jerry (Lil) and Ed (Marianne) as well as 3 sisters, Loretta Maley, Florence (Dewell) Linn and Emma (Ray) Wachs. He was predeceased by his parents, Frank and Gertrude Hilsendager; sister, Irene Uzelman and 2 brothers, Bob and Leo.
Luke was born on the farm at Revenue, SK. on September 23, 1932. He was the 3rd oldest of 9 children. Luke was always a hard worker and at the age of 16 went to work on the section for the CPR. He could swing a spike mall with the best of them. He tried to get on the train crew but was told “come back when you’re 18”. On his 18th birthday, he went back and was hired to work in the roundhouse and shortly thereafter he became a fireman, his dream job shovelling tons of coal into the old steam engines. While stationed in Wilkie, he met Verna and they were married in 1955. Diesel powered engines were starting to be used and Luke no longer had enough seniority to remain railroading and provide for his family. Oil drilling was booming in the area at the time so he joined the patch. He spent the next 43 years there, moving the family from one location to the next for the first 3 years, then moving to a new town every summer, closest to where the job took him. In 1965, he lost most of the use of his right arm in a drilling accident, but that didn’t hold him back. He learned to write with his left hand and went back to school and upgraded his education while convalescing. In 2 years, he was back in the patch as though he had never left. Other than a short time in BC., working in a pulp mill and a couple of years owning a hotel in Tompkins, SK., the oil was still in his blood. The last 25 years were spent consulting with his own company, Buffalo Consulting. When Luke turned 65, he retired and the next several years were spent travelling and camping with friends old and new. A Private Family Celebration of Luke’s life will be held at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel on Saturday, October 30, 2021, at 2:30 p.m. with Deacon Risling celebrant. Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery. The chapel service will be live streamed and anyone wishing to experience Luke’s service should visit http://www.cooksouthland.com and select the View Broadcast Button on the homepage at service time. Memorial donations in Luke’s name may be made directly to the Medicine Hat and District Health Foundation, subject heading: Margery E. Yuill Cancer Centre, 666 – 5 Street S.W., Medicine Hat, AB., T1A 4H6. (Condolences may be expressed by visiting at http://www.cooksouthland.com) Honoured to serve the family is
