She is survived by her brother, Ronald of Ottawa, Ontario and by her nieces and nephews: Brenda Lynde, Lethbridge; Cheryl Mehrer (Desmond Albuguerque), Ajax, Ontario; Barbara Mehrer (Dariusz Galczynski), Ottawa; Keith (Nathalie) Mehrer, Nepean, Ontario; and Glen (Karen) Cooper, Cornwall, Ontario. In addition, she is survived by great-nieces and great-nephews, Shaun Lynde, Nikole Brooks, Michael Brooks, Abigail Mehrer, and Ethan Mehrer as well as her uncle, Lawrence (Laura) Gehring. Nellie was predeceased by her parents Paulina (nee Gehring) and Christian Mehrer, sisters Carolyn (Alfred) Cooper, Eleanor Mehrer, and Marion (Walter) Guzik. She devoted over fifty years bookkeeping for Harry Veiner, initially, at Hycroft China and, later, at all of his holdings. She was an accomplished pianist and organist, playing at weekly church services, weddings, and funerals for many years. Her passion for music also included accompanying solos, duets, trios and quartets, and directing a girls choir in cantatas. She was dedicated to the Lord and her church and taught Sunday school classes to hundreds of children, many who still called her "Auntie Nellie". Each one was special to her. Nellie also wrote many poems, some general and others for special occasions such as birthdays, anniversaries and life tributes. We would like to extend a special "Thank you" to the staff at Meadow Ridge Seniors Village who treated her so well over the past nearly four years. A celebration of her life will take place in the spring of 2022. Those who wish to remember Nellie with a donation may do so to the charity of your choice. LAWRENCE (LARRY) GEORGE VOELLER

AUGUST 24, 1958 – OCTOBER 21, 2021

It is with extreme sadness that family announce the passing of their beloved husband, father and grandfather, Lawrence (Larry) George Voeller. Larry passed away at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital on Thursday, October 21, 2021, at the age of 63 years. He will be deeply missed by his wife, Cindy; daughter, Aimee (Troy); sons, Michael (Kaylee) and Brett (Kennedy); grandson, Nash; brother, Ray (Anna); brother-in-laws and sisters-in-law, Randy and Sherry Cameron and Doug and Wanda Smail as well as many nieces, nephews and close friend, Richard Sauer. Larry was predeceased by his parents, Simon and Mary Voeller; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Murray and Jeanette Smail; nephew, Cody Smail and niece, Anna Smail. Larry was born in Calgary, AB., on August 24, 1958 and raised on the family farm in Maleb, Alberta. He attended Conquerville School, Senator Gershaw School and Medicine Hat High School. Larry had a great childhood growing up on the family farm where he filled an active role helping out whether it was feeding the animals or driving truck. Larry also enjoyed playing sports growing up, dirtbiking with his good friend Neil Dragland and having many adventures with his brother and cousins. After school, Larry went to work on the rigs for many years, and it was during this time that he met the love of his life in Medicine Hat, Cindy. They were married on July 2, 1983 and purchased a home in Medicine Hat. After the arrival of their first born, Aimee, Larry made the decision to quit the rigs and to farm full time to be closer to his family. A couple of years later, after the arrival of Michael and with Brett on the way, they made the move to the family farm in Maleb. While living on the farm, Larry enjoyed the produce from Cindy’s garden and he was always eager to try her latest baking creations. He loved watching his kids grow up on the farm and play their many sports. Jokingly and lovingly known by his family as “Coach Larry”, even after his kids graduated, Larry always made it out to watch all of their recreational sports. Ten years later, Larry and family made the move to Bow Island where Larry started a successful roofing company called Voeller’s roofing. He also worked for Polycore, Nutrien Ag and drove combine. He absolutely loved camping, fishing, spending time with friends and going on many trips with his brother and sister-in-law, Randy and Sherry. Larry’s family was his greatest passion and he was there for them in every way. Whether it was fixing vehicles, watching their animals, reminding them when their registration was due, changing their furnace filters or his constant 30 minute countdown before leaving to go anywhere. Larry treasured becoming a grandfather to his first grandchild, Nash. He was so proud to be the first one to meet him in the hospital. Nash is a spitting image of him and everyone refers to him as “Little Larry”. Having touched the lives of so many, Larry will be deeply missed. Due to the current COVID-19 restrictions in place, the service honouring Larry’s life will be by invitation only. Larry’s Celebration will be held at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel on Saturday, October 30, 2021, at 10:00 a.m. with Pastor Murray Jaster officiating. Private Interment will follow. The chapel service will be live streamed and anyone wishing to experience Larry’s service should visit http://www.cooksouthland.com and select the View Broadcast Button on the homepage at service time. LINDA MARGO LAING

January 4, 1950 – October 24, 2021

Lin was born during a snowstorm in a farm house outside Horsham, SK., and shortly thereafter, the family moved to Tilley. She loved telling childhood stories of playing hockey and swimming at the canal. Later on, the family moved to Medicine Hat where Lin met and married her husband of 53 years. The couple raised their family in Redcliff where she took pride in gardening, baking, sewing, endless renovating and raising her daughters. When the glass factory shut down, she and Bob moved to Vernon, BC. Lin loved living in the mountains, but moved back to the Hat a few years later to be with family. She was an excellent seamstress, and amongst all personal projects for family and friends, she singlehandedly made dozens of curtains for the rooms at the Medicine Hat Lodge. Her joy was being a Mom, Grandma, and Great-Grandma.

“Don’t worry Mom, we’re still kickin”

Along with her loving husband Robert, Lin’s memory will live on in the hearts of her family: daughters, Sherry Laing and Cindy (Karl) Hinch; grandson, Larson (Berchiena) Laing; great-granddaughters, Kayleigh and McKinley; sisters, Deloris Petersen, Valerie Bruce and Murel (Gerry) Bray. She was predeceased by her mother and father, Lydia (nee Hildenbrand) and Reinhold Brost; sister and brothers, Fran Sutherland, Ken Brost and Harvey Brost. Please join the family for the celebration of Linda’s life at the Home Stay Inn & Suites, 954 – 7 Street S.W., Medicine Hat on Thursday, October 28, 2021, starting at 3:00 p.m. (Condolences may be expressed by visiting our website at http://www.cooksouthland.com) If friends so desire, donations in memory of Lin may be made directly to APARC, 1002 South Railway Street, S.E., Medicine Hat, Alberta, T1A 2W2 or the SPCA, 55 Southwest Drive S.W., Medicine Hat, Alberta, T1A 8E8. LUKE HILSENDAGER

September 23, 1932 ~ October 16, 2021

Luke Hilsendager passed away at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital on Saturday, October 16, 2021, at the age of 89 years. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife Verna as well as his 5 children. Randy (Marina), Cheryl (Darcy) Thoreson, Michelle (Alvin) Miller, Rick (Peggy) and Debbie (Ian) MacGillivray. His memory will also be cherished in the hearts of his 14 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren, soon to be nine. Luke was very proud of his grandchildren and he could always make the babies smile. Luke is survived by his 2 brothers, Jerry (Lil) and Ed (Marianne) as well as 3 sisters, Loretta Maley, Florence (Dewell) Linn and Emma (Ray) Wachs. He was predeceased by his parents, Frank and Gertrude Hilsendager; sister, Irene Uzelman and 2 brothers, Bob and Leo.
Luke was born on the farm at Revenue, SK. on September 23, 1932. He was the 3rd oldest of 9 children. Luke was always a hard worker and at the age of 16 went to work on the section for the CPR. He could swing a spike mall with the best of them. He tried to get on the train crew but was told “come back when you’re 18”. On his 18th birthday, he went back and was hired to work in the roundhouse and shortly thereafter he became a fireman, his dream job shovelling tons of coal into the old steam engines. While stationed in Wilkie, he met Verna and they were married in 1955. Diesel powered engines were starting to be used and Luke no longer had enough seniority to remain railroading and provide for his family. Oil drilling was booming in the area at the time so he joined the patch. He spent the next 43 years there, moving the family from one location to the next for the first 3 years, then moving to a new town every summer, closest to where the job took him. In 1965, he lost most of the use of his right arm in a drilling accident, but that didn’t hold him back. He learned to write with his left hand and went back to school and upgraded his education while convalescing. In 2 years, he was back in the patch as though he had never left. Other than a short time in BC., working in a pulp mill and a couple of years owning a hotel in Tompkins, SK., the oil was still in his blood. The last 25 years were spent consulting with his own company, Buffalo Consulting. When Luke turned 65, he retired and the next several years were spent travelling and camping with friends old and new. A Private Family Celebration of Luke’s life will be held at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel on Saturday, October 30, 2021, at 2:30 p.m. with Deacon Risling celebrant. Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery. The chapel service will be live streamed and anyone wishing to experience Luke’s service should visit http://www.cooksouthland.com and select the View Broadcast Button on the homepage at service time. Memorial donations in Luke’s name may be made directly to the Medicine Hat and District Health Foundation, subject heading: Margery E.
