1932 ~ IDA HEIDINGER-HUST ~ 2021 Ida Heidinger-Hust passed away peacefully Wednesday, October 6, 2021 at the age of 89 years. She was born at Eagle Butte, Alberta on March 31, 1932 to Andrew and Hertha Klaiber and was the oldest child of four. In 1953, she married Harvey Heidinger and for 29 years together they farmed in the Seven Persons area until Harvey’s death in 1982. In 1983, Ida moved into Medicine Hat, where she continued her love of gardening, became an avid golfer and volunteered for many years as part of the Palliative Care Society at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital. She adored her Friday afternoon coffee with the girls and her greatest passion was simply spending time with her grandchildren.Ida is survived by her daughter Lorna Wityk, grandson Christopher (Carissa) Wityk and great-grandson Bryson, her granddaughter Nicole (Jeff) Bailey and great-granddaughters Charlotte and Natalie. She is also survived by her brother, John Klaiber and sister, Doreen Munro as well as nieces and nephews. Ida was predeceased by her first husband Harvey Heidinger as well as her second husband Edward Hust. She was also predeceased by her sister Eileen Frank, son-in-law Nick Wityk and nephews Trevor Munro and Neil Klaiber. Family and friends who wish to pay their respects may do so at the PATTISON FUNERAL HOME on Tuesday from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Masks are mandatory. A private family graveside service will take place at Hillside Cemetery on Tuesday, October 12, 2021 with Rev. Robert Findley officiating. 1952 ~ DAVID ALLAN "DAVE" THOMSON ~ 2021 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of David Thomson on October 5th, 2021 at the age of 69 years. He passed away peacefully surrounded by his family which he loved so deeply. Dave was born on June 8th, 1952 in Calgary, AB. His parents, Thomas & Jean Thomson moved the family to Medicine Hat in 1954. Dave attended and graduated from Crescent Heights High school in 1969. He made the decision to follow in his father’s footsteps and joined the insurance business in 1976. He began his life-long career working for Thomson Fisher Insurance. In 1982, he married his sweetheart, Valarie, and together they raised their two sons, Eric and Adam. In 1985, Dave opened Dave Thomson Insurance which then later became TSG Insurance and Financial with the addition of his business partners, Ken Schindle and Stuart Green. After a long and successful career, Dave retired from the insurance industry in 2011. Dave volunteered many hours and years to the Kinsmen Club of Medicine Hat and he helped with the planning of the national convention that was held here in Medicine Hat. He also served as president of the Kinsmen Club in 1996 and 1997. Dave was a well known and a highly a respected businessman in the Medicine Hat community. In his leisure time, Dave was an avid sailor and outdoorsman. He had an innate love of nature and enjoyed experiencing it with his friends and family. Golf and curling were also great passions for him and whilst he had a love for these sports, his love for family and friends was far greater than the sports he played. He will be deeply missed and his memories treasured by his wife of 39 years, Valarie; his children, Eric (Andrea) Thomson and Adam (Victoria) Thomson; his grandchildren, Bridgette, Thomas, Charlotte, Allister, and Briella; his brother-in-law, Dan Rigby (Deb Kopek); his nephew, Ian (Kayla) Rigby; as well as numerous cousins and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Thomas and Jean Thomson and sister, Donna Jean Rigby. Dave was a loving soul and a remarkable individual; he will be deeply missed by many and the mark he has left in this city will be his legacy. A private family graveside service will take place at 11:00 am on Tuesday, October 12th, 2021 at SAAMIS PRAIRIE VIEW CEMETERY. The memorial service and reception will be held at the MEDICINE HAT GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB at 1:30 pm on Tuesday, October 12th, 2021. DEBRA BERYL (DUMONT) PETTYJOHN 1953 – 2021 Debra Beryl (Dumont) Pettyjohn passed away peacefully at the Medicine Hat Hospital on October 4th, 2021. She was born in Taber, Alberta on January 13th, 1953 to parents, Willard & Vera (Curling) Dumont. Her father worked as a cowboy, ranch-hand, and contractor, and as such she spent her very early life on various ranch-steads in southeastern Alberta. In 1956 her father assumed the role of Foreman of the LA Ranch south of Elkwater, Alberta. Living in the log LA Ranch house formed many of her earliest memories in life. Given the isolated location of the ranch at the time, when she reached school age, her mother homeschooled her for the first two years. For Grades III & IV she attended a small country school near Elkwater known as Lebanon School. Her parents then secured a lot in the Elkwater townsite, onto which they moved a former CPR section house, so that Debra and her sister could catch the bus to school in Irvine, Alberta. In 1967 her parents purchased the 4-T Ranch in the Eagle Butte Valley just below the Head of the Mountain at Elkwater. As a result, Debra returned to Lebanon School for Grade IX. Grades X to XII were completed at Medicine Hat High School initially through boarding arrangements and later living with her sister in a rented apartment. Ranch life suited Debra well in her youth, and she spent a great deal of time outdoors working alongside her father. She indicated in her memoirs that she was “a strong girl… I gave the hired men a good run for strength, throwing hay bales side-by-side.” She graduated from Medicine Hat High in the spring of 1971, and then on September 17th of that same year she married Terry Pettyjohn. Nine months and three days later, the couple’s first child, Royce Pettyjohn, was born. The couple initially settled on the ranch known as the “Parr Place” on the banks of Battle Creek southwest of Merryflat, Saskatchewan. Challenges with road conditions and accessibility in and out of the ranch in the winter resulted in them moving to the original Pettyjohn homestead up on Merryflat in 1974. The following year their second child, Calvin Pettyjohn, was born. The ranch on Battle Creek was sold in 1978, and the couple purchased the Flatview Ranch in the Arbana District northwest of Downie Lake in 1979. That same year their third child, Terina Pettyjohn, was born. A fourth child, Alex Pettyjohn, was born in 1982. As her family expanded she focused less attention when possible on ranch work, and more attention on homemaking activities such as cooking, baking, and sewing. While she maintained that her outdoor work in her youth left her ill prepared for being a housewife, she was nonetheless a fantastic cook and baker. In 1989, when all of her children were attending school full time, Debra purchased a clothing consignment store in Maple Creek which she operated until 1992. After closing her shop, she worked at various businesses in Maple Creek, but was always the most delighted when asked to work in Debbie Lambert’s gift shop “Sagebrush Plants & Gifts”. Continuing her education was important to Debra, and from the late 1980’s through to the mid-1990’ she completed a range of courses culminating with a course in cultural resource management through the University of Victoria that she completed in 1996. Like her parents before her, Debra was community minded and served in many volunteer capacities over the years for the Maple Creek Team Roping Club, Job’s Daughters, and the Maple Creek museums. In 1996 Debra and her husband Terry celebrated their silver wedding anniversary. However, the couple soon afterwards separated and later divorced. Debra left the Flatview Ranch in July 1997 to pursue a career in property management in Medicine Hat, which she continued until December 2008. In 2004 a baby girl by the name of Serenity Heinz was born to an acquaintance of the family. Debra assumed the role of surrogate Grandmother (or Nanny) to the baby, a relationship she maintained throughout her life. By 2009 Debra had met her common-law husband Garry Lentz, and moved to his farm in Cypress County, Alberta. Debra continued to live on the farm with Garry until her passing in 2021. Although she travelled to England as a child to visit her Grandparents in 1963, as an adult Debra was not fond of long-distance travel. However, in 2007 she was convinced to fly to Las Vegas with all of her children to watch her youngest son compete in a pool tournament. After this trip, Debra embraced travel and she subsequently enjoyed a return to Las Vegas, a trip to Jamaica for her youngest son’s wedding, travels throughout Alberta & a trip to Winnipeg with Garry, a month-long visit to England in 2015 to visit her cousins, and another short visit to England in 2016 during which she was thrilled to meet Their Royal Highnesses the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall at Canada House on Trafalgar Square. Debra was however happiest when she was at home with her family. Her greatest loves in life were her children and her grandchildren who she relished spending as much time with as possible. Debra will be sadly missed by her sister, Donna (Herb) Kopp; her partner, Garry Lentz; her children, Royce Pettyjohn, Cal Pettyjohn, Terina (Laurie) Pettyjohn Sommerfeld, Alex (Karla) Pettyjohn, and her grandchildren, Serenity Heinz, Lukas Sommerfeld, Alissa Sommerfeld, Ethyn Pettyjohn, Koltyn Pettyjohn; and her step-grandchildren, Amber & Nathan Sommerfeld. Also, her adoptive sister, Mona (Don) Girling, their sons Cody & Cameron; her nephews, Aaron and Brad Kopp, and her extended family of cousins in both Canada and England. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Debra may be made to the S.W. Sask. Oldtimers’ Museum, Box, 1540 Maple Creek, Saskatchewan S0N 1N0. GARY KEITH MASON November 18, 1942 ~ October 3, 2021 On October 3rd, Gary Mason, known to many as “Dad or Poppa”, took his last breath here on earth surrounded by his loved ones before he went home to be with Jesus.
Gary was born on Nov. 18th, 1942 to Carl and Suoma (Finnila) Mason and was one of 4 children along with Tracy (Wilhelmine), Judi (Dan), and Larry (Cathy). Gary met his wife of 57 years, Diana (Godfrey), at a church youth BBQ in 1963. He went on to marry his “Angel” on Sept 19th, 1964. They had 3 children Baby Girl, Laura Lee (Mike), and Gary Jr. (Beth). The family began their life of adventures in Toronto, Ontario where Gary worked as a beat officer with the Toronto Police Force. There he helped establish the Toronto Police Basketball team with his friend Don Kitter. After 3 years on the force, he went on to be a lineman on the Toronto Hydro for 15 years. In I974 he had a life transforming experience when he came to know his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ which led him into his life’s calling in 1980. At that time, he moved his family from Toronto, Ontario to Regina, Saskatchewan. There he began training for the ministry for 2 years and going on to establish his first posting in 1982 in Churchbridge, SK. He continued ministering for the next 32 years in SK, ON, and AB until he officially retired in Redcliff, AB in 2013.
Gary found his greatest joy in knowing the Lord and lived that joy out as an expression of unconditional love for his family and others. He was a man that believed your faith was best revealed in simple tasks of the day like giving someone a ride, fixing a fence, or telling a corny joke! Love was the essence of his being. His humility and grace proceeded him wherever he went, bringing laugher and joy to everyone as he entered a room. After being in his presence, you knew you were loved just a little more and part of his extended family.
For anyone who wishes to attend Gary's Interment, it will be held at Redcliff Cemetery on Oct 15th at 1:30 pm. Due to COVID restrictions we will be live streaming Gary’s celebration of life at Medicine Hat Family Church at 3:00 pm with his immediate family and church family in attendance. Others who wish to attend are welcome, but please understand we will have to limit the number of attendees if need be. HANSEN Ms. Gloria Hansen, beloved mother, grandmother, spouse and friend, passed on September 4, 2021 at the age of 69. Gloria leaves to cherish her memory her children; Shane Blair (Kasandra Sajinovic), Tammie Helem, Tara Helem; all of Medicine Hat, AB. She leave also three grandchildren; Tyren, Arianna and Aspen.
Gloria was blessed with four brothers; Wayne Lanz (Sam Parker) of Nainaimo, Earl Lanz of Edmonton, Kelvin Lanz (Colleen Lanz) of Medicine Hat and Darrel Lanz (Linda Stone) of Edmonton.
Gloria leaves behind her spouse, Don Casey of 29 years. Spending many life milestones together and even more hours in the pasture. These two shared a bond like no other and supported each other through their life journey.
Gloria is predeceased by her father Chris Lanz (1971) and her mother Delores Lanz (nee Shatz) (2006).
Gloria will be missed dearly by her family and friends. A funeral service will be determined at a later date.

LAVINA VERNA KNELSEN Nov. 29, 1936 ~ Oct. 3, 2021 Lavina passed away peacefully at St. Joseph’s Home in Medicine Hat on the evening of October 3, 2021, at the age of 84 years. She is survived by her two sons, Robert (Marie) and Brian (Anita); brother, Walter (Florabelle); step-granddaughters, Lindsay (Dongmin) and Sabrina as well as numerous nieces, nephews and their families. She was predeceased by her parents, Henry and Mary Senft; the love of her life, Edward (1980) and her brother, Ray. Lavina was born and raised on the farm near Hodgeville, SK., and married Edward Knelsen in October 1955. Lavina spent her free time in her garden and had a green thumb like no other. Her home and yard were always filled with beautiful plants. Lavina had a knack for making African Violets thrive. While in The Wellington, she started plants for the staff. Lavina also enjoyed cooking, painting and playing piano; teaching piano lessons for years. Throughout the years, Lavina worked at Nutter’s as well as a couple of bakeries in Medicine Hat. She also did some traveling with Ed to Hawaii, enjoyed many family camping trips and went to Mexico for Brian and Anita’s wedding. Lavina spent the last four years enjoying life at The Wellington where she participated in crafts, activities, music and new found friendships. As one of Jehovah’s Witnesses, Lavina looked forward to a time when she would be with her beloved husband again, living here on earth in perfect conditions. Welcoming back those who died before her, as part of Jehovah’s kingdom arrangement. A private service will be held.
