1937 – SIMON HAMMEL – 2021

Simon Andrew Hammel of Medicine Hat, beloved husband of Emma Hammel, passed away on Tuesday, August 10, 2021 at the age of 84 years. Along with Emma, he leaves his two sons and four grandchildren to cherish his memory: Robert (Laureen) Hammel, Braden and Derek; and David (Michelle) Hammel, Eliana and Cadence. He will also be lovingly remembered by his brother Peter (Phyllis) Hammel, sister Mavis (Blaine) Taylor and his numerous nieces and nephews. Simon was predeceased by his parents, Leonard and Anna Hammel; brother, Ray Hammel and sister-in-law Marlene; sister, Anna Fitterer and brother-in-law Tony; sister Mag Fleckenstein and brother-in-law John. Simon grew up on the family farm near Etzikom and left school at age 14 to help his dad farm. In 1963, Simon’s sister Mavis set him up on a blind date with Emma Dietrich. Three years later they were married and settled in Medicine Hat. Simon continued farming in the Etzikom area alongside his brother Ray until suffering a heart attack and stroke in 1982. At that time, Ray and his sons, Len and Lorne, took over farming his land. Simon's love for farming never wavered, even after his health wouldn't allow him to actively farm. He continued to check in regularly to see how each season was progressing. Many phone calls would begin with "So what do you know for sure" or "how much rain did you get?”. When it was time for seeding or harvest on Simon’s land, he would ensure that pizza and beer would always arrive at supper time. One of his favourite times was riding in the combine to inspect the crops and progression of the harvest. When Simon was no longer actively farming, his hobby of building things came to life. Over the years he built many special items for Emma, his boys and his grandchildren that will be cherished for years to come. These creations were built with love in his impeccably kept shop and with his self-customized tools that allowed him to work with only one hand. He spent hours sharing his love of carpentry with his grandsons, patiently teaching them how to use the table saw and other power tools. Simon also helped out Emma by making Avon deliveries and became known as the “Avon Man”. He enjoyed his delivery days because they often came with good visits and hot coffee. Above all else though, family was the most important thing to Simon. He was always checking in and rarely forgot a detail that was shared. His regular phone calls will be missed by everyone. The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of Haven of Rest and Masterpiece for the wonderful care that Simon received. A private family funeral mass will be held at St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church (238 2nd Ave N.E.) on Wednesday, August 18, 2021 with Father Roque Pereira Celebrant. Interment will take place at a later date. Those who wish to remember Simon with a donation may do so to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. ELEANOR HELENE WRIGHT

May 15, 1929 ~ August 13, 2021

It is with sadness the family announce the passing of their mother, Eleanor Helene Wright, beloved wife of the late Clifford Wright, at St. Joseph’s Home – Carmel Hospice, Medicine Hat on Friday, August 13, 2021, at the age of 92 years. Eleanor was born and raised in Medicine Hat and spent almost her entire life in the city she loved. She met and married another Medicine Hat resident, Cliff Wright, in 1954. They built a life for themselves together and made many life long friendships. Eleanor was an incredible and inspiring mom. She treasured her children almost as much as they did her. She especially loved and excelled at her role as grandmother. Her intelligence, kindness and grace were evident to all who had the pleasure of meeting and enjoying her love of family, friends, and life. In between raising three daughters, Eleanor dedicated herself to public service and her community. She was elected and served as a school board trustee for the Medicine Hat Public Schools and a town councilor for the Town of Vulcan during the family’s time there. She was the first female political campaign manager in the city of Medicine Hat. Thanks to Jim Horsman, who saw how capable and intelligent she truly was. Along with her already busy schedule, she found time to be the president of Kinettes, serve on an Alberta planning board and be a part of a multitude of other positions that made everywhere she lived a better place. In her long life, she maintained her interest in the world around her. Always reading, listening and never judging. She set a standard for the rest of us to try and achieve. If family and public service were not enough to keep Eleanor busy, she enjoyed skiing, sailing and traveling with Cliff and anyone who would join in the fun. Eleanor will be missed by many but no more than her three daughters; Janet, Carol (Mike) and Tanis (Joel); grandchildren Blake, Meg (Pete), Jack (Cassy), Janet (Bryan), Josh (Kurt) and Brooke. Eleanor will be interred with Cliff, who predeceased her on September 19, 2018. The family wish to thank St. Joesph’s Home for all the kindness and love they extended to their mom in her last days. It was very special and meant so much to us. The Celebration of Eleanor’s life will be held at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, 901 – 13 Street S.W., Medicine Hat on Friday, August 20, 2021, at 2:00 p.m. with Reverend Jeff Lackie officiating. If friends so desire, please give to a charity or foundation that you believe exemplifies Eleanor’s life best. (Condolences may be expressed by visiting our website at http://www.cooksouthland.com). TERRANCE “TERRY” SAWCHUK

1954 – 2021

SAWCHUK, Terry (Terrance) William, born in Kenora, ON on April 15th, 1954, passed away peacefully on August 13th, 2021 in Medicine Hat with his wife by his side. Terry is predeceased by his parents, Bill and Ina Sawchuk. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Theresa; sonsKelly (Tracy) Sawchuk, Kevin Sawchuk and his bonus son, Troy Want; daughters Anji (Pete) Rose, Nikki Spangler and Kayla (Scott) Plouffe; grandchildren, Taylor, Brayden, Bennett, Kelcey, Natasha, Haleigh, Shane, Katie, Kennedy, Torie, Kolbey, Madison, Cas, Jacob, Julia and Lucas; and many loved great grandchildren. He also leaves his sisters, Francis (Bernie) Beggamann, Michelle Kuyten and Lisa Sawchuk and many nieces and nephews.
Terry married the love of his life on September 14th, 2002. Terry and Terry spent 20 years together celebrating the ups and pushing through the downs. He loved his wife more than life itself. He celebrated their love on the 14th of every month during their 19 years of marriage offering her a ring of many kinds each time. There was nothing he wanted more than to make her happy.
Terry had a large family that always surrounded him with love and support. He was a brilliant presence in any room he entered, was always the life of the party with many jokes and stories to tell. His family meant the absolute world to him. He was always there for anyone at any time no matter the circumstance. Terry was an employee of the City of Medicine Hat for many years while also running The Rainmaker Sprinklers for over 20 years. Throughout this time, he formed many friendships that lasted his lifetime. He enjoyed playing cards, golfing, camping and just being around as many family and friends as possible. Terry loved minor sports, spending many years coaching hockey when his boys were young and softball when his grandchildren were
small. He attended every game he could and was always there rain or shine to cheer them on.
On March 12th, 2011, he received a double lung transplant that allowed him to remain with his family for ten more years for which he and his family were grateful. We celebrated this anniversary with him this year to mark how many more years we were gifted to spend together.
On August 7th, he fell ill with COVID which kept him hospitalized for 6 days before he succumbed to the illness. His wife was able to be with him to the end to comfort him. There will not be a funeral service at this time, the immediate family will be together privately to celebrate his life.
Terry’s medical team both in Medicine Hat and Calgary were wonderful and took great care of him throughout the years. A special thank you to Dr. Larjani; nurses Journey, Selena, Peggy and the rest of the staff of 5E at Medicine Hat Hospital. Also, to nurse Karin at Maple Creek Hospital.
His doctors at the transplant clinic in Calgary, Dr. Helmerson, Dr. Liu, Dr. Thakrar and nurses, Kelly and Vida were the reason he received such amazing care and kept him with his family. A special thank you to Whitney and Nicole in Calgary.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Southern Alberta Transplant Program at the U of A or the Canadian Lung Association.
