1921 – MARTHA HAUCK – 2021
Martha Katherine Hauck of Medicine Hat, passed away on Sunday, July 11, 2021, two months short of her 100th birthday. Martha was one of seven children born into an immigrant family who homesteaded in Southern Saskatchewan. She was the last surviving member of her family. She earned a Teaching Certificate and taught for over 30 years at various locations in Alberta and Saskatchewan before retiring in 1978, while remaining active in St. Patrick’s Parish and the C.W.L. She lived a quiet and peaceful life, but was active in many community groups, and enjoyed curling and travelling. Not long after each of her trips, “slide night at Martha’s” followed and she shared memories of her travels. She lived at St. Joseph’s Home for many years where again, she expanded her circle of friends. Her St. Joe’s family was a great source of pleasure and comfort to her.
Although she never married or had children, Martha developed a large family around her. Her family included the many friends she met over the years and at least two families were fortunate enough to have her sponsor and support them as they moved to Canada. Although those acts were carried out many years ago, those who were affected continue to be grateful for her kindness.
Closest to Martha’s heart were her 16 nieces and nephews. Each one of them benefitted from her wisdom, kindness, sharp wit and incredible memory. She was always happy to share with them and always welcomed a call, card, letter or visit from them. Family and friends are welcome to attend the memorial service that will be held in the PATTISON CHAPEL at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 24, 2021 with Fr. Roque Pereira Celebrant. The service will be live streamed, and family and friends who are unable to attend are invited to watch the service by searching for the Pattison Funeral Home Youtube page. The video will go live 10 minutes prior to service time and will remain on the youtube page for future viewing. Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery. In keeping with Martha’s wishes in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Joseph’s Home, the Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter or your local Food Bank. JOHN (J.C. / JOHNNY) HOFF
March 24, 1925 ~ July 6, 2021
John Clement Hoff passed away at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary on Tuesday, July 6, 2021, at the age of 96 years. John leaves to mourn his passing: four sons, Jan (Bev) of Crossfield, Tyler (Heather) of Wembley, Jody (Sheila) of Sexsmith, Ryne (Tara) of Calgary; nine grandchildren, Jason (Cheryl), Lesley (Clayton), Brett (Delicia), Macy, Rylan, Chad, Bailey (Tanner), Cassidy and Nicole; six great- grandchildren; several step-grandchildren as well as his two sisters, Evelyn Bulloch and Ella Olsen. John was predeceased by his loving wife, Jean in 1995; sister, Rosie Bowen; brothers, Fred and Edward (Teddy) as well as several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law. John was born and raised on the farm at Mair, Saskatchewan. He married Jean Blunt on December 5,1951, in Winnipeg, Manitoba. They started their married life on Vancouver Island where Johnny was employed at a sawmill for a brief time. They made the move to Fairlight, SK., where he started up a Massey Harris dealership (and garage). A few years later, he sold his business and moved to Redvers. It was at this time he went into the road construction and farming business. His beloved, Bar Punch Ranch, was created in 1965 when he purchased a herd of cattle. John started learning about purebred cattle and developed a passion for the Charolais breed. His discovery through the study of blood lines and pedigree of the animal was of utmost importance to John, so much so that he traveled to France twice and started to import cattle to Canada. In 1976, John and Jean made the decision to sell the farm and all of his cattle. They decided to pursue a new interest and purchased the Redvers Hotel which they owned until the fall of 1980. Over the next 14 years they owned the Kennedy Hotel and then the Burstall Hotel. In 1994, they finally decided to sell the last hotel and moved to their acreage in Medicine Hat. John never forgot his passion and it was here that he made the decision to get back into full French Charolais cattle. Bar Punch Ranch was born 56 years ago and is still in operation by his sons to this day. Johnny’s favourite pastime was watching baseball, especially the Blue Jays. He also had a love for music and dancing and was known to always have a line of beautiful women waiting to step onto the dance floor with him! In December 2015, John decided to move to Calgary to be closer to his family and it is where he resided until the time of his passing. John’s witty sense of humour and stubborn sense of independence will be sadly missed by all. A Celebration of Johnny’s life will be held at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, 901 – 13 Street S.W., Medicine Hat on Saturday, July 24, 2021, at 2:00 p.m., with Murray Jaster officiating. Those wishing to join the family virtually and experience John’s celebration are invited to watch via Live-Stream and may do so by visiting
