1937 – PHILIP STAPPLER – 2021

Philip Anthony Stappler of Bow Island, beloved husband of 59 years to June Stappler, passed away on June 2, 2021 at the age of 83 years. Phil was born into a pioneer family. Following his family legacy as a dryland farmer south of Bow Island, farming was his life. After retiring, Phil loved gardening, fishing in his pond and driving school bus. He also enjoyed travelling and camping, making many return trips to the Oregon coast. He leaves to cherish his memory two children, Vicki (Pat) Galipeau and Tim (Veronika) Stappler all of Medicine Hat; three grandchildren; Taylor (Mitch), Austin (Halee) and Elisabeth; two great grandchildren Georgia and Felix; one brother David (Joan) Stappler; one sister Cecile (Robert) Arsenault; two brothers-in-law Roy Nerland and William (Shirley) Marshall; sister-in-law Debra (Randy) Elder, his aunt Mary Roth as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Magdalena and Anthony Stappler; June’s parents’ Merle and Robert Marshal; two sons, Michael (1982), Robert (1988) and one sister Isabel Nerland. Phil’s family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the health care workers at Bow Island Health Centre for the exceptional care provided. Due to the current health restrictions, a private family graveside service will take place. 1947 ~ MARJORIE BERG ~ 2021

 

Marjorie (Watson) Berg of Medicine Hat, died peacefully June 6, 2021 at the age of 73 years. Born in Swift Current, Saskatchewan on October 29, 1947. Marjorie was the 2nd daughter to, Phyllis and Ernest Watson. She will be deeply missed by her son, Scott (Mandy) Berg, grandchildren, Aydria Berg, Nayla Berg, and Piercyn Berg; sister, Wendy (Bill) Wolcoski; brothers-in-law, Abe (Joy) Berg and Henry (Gail) Berg; sister-in-law, Dolly Berg; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. Marjorie was predeceased by her husband, Neil; parents, Ernest and Phyllis Watson; and sister, Lesley Berg. She lived as a child in Brandon, Manitoba and Eastend, Saskatchewan. Graduating high school in Eastend in 1965. She received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from the University of Saskatchewan in 1970. Marjorie married Neil Berg on June 6, 1970, following her convocation. They began their married life in Calgary where Marjorie worked in the OR and School of Nursing at Calgary General until it was changed from hospital based to school based education at Mount Royal. Marjorie then worked for the V.O.N. in Calgary as a care nurse for a couple years until taking some time off before their son, Scott was born in 1975. In 1976, the Bergs moved to Shaunavon, Saskatchewan. Neil was in partnership with Marjorie’s dad in an electrical business and they settled into a busy family life. Marjorie worked in Public Health in Shaunavon for about 4 years. She then moved into home care for about 14 years to help develop the health care aide program for the Health District. Her last employment in Shaunavon was as a Senior Administrator with the Southwest Health District. The course of Marjorie’s life was forever changed when Neil passed away in 1997 after a brief struggle with cancer. In 1998, Marjorie moved to Medicine Hat to be closer to family. She soon began working at the Medicine Hat College, teaching the Health Care Aid program for about 6 years, retiring in 2007. During this time her son Scott moved to Medicine Hat and married. Marjorie very much enjoyed having him near and she was very proud of his accomplishments. As his family grew she loved spending time with her grandchildren, eagerly attending any events they participated in. Family was very important to Marjorie. She was very involved in the care of her parents in their senior years, and as she was considered the family ” medic” she was always there to help and give advice for anyone who asked. She was always eager to attend any family events, and also enjoyed keeping up with family and friends spending hours on the phone. Marjorie loved to travel. She went on several bus tours in the US and particularly loved her trips to Victoria BC. Two huge highlights were trips to Great Britain with her sister, Wendy and niece, Kelli in 2003, and the Indy 500 with Scott and Mandy in 2008. She was an avid news and TV watcher and kept very up to date with the current events. She also enjoyed watching many sports including golf, car racing, horse racing, equestrian, and tennis. Illness plagued her in her retirement years. She was forced to forego many of the things she wanted to do. As her health declined she moved through the system into various care homes as her needs required. She was always a great advocate for the nursing staff wherever she lived. Her most recent move was to Masterpiece where she resided until her passing. The events of the last year were very hard on her as she was unable to see or spend as much time with family and friends as she would have liked. She watched and enjoyed her last Indy 500 the Sunday before her passing. She died peacefully with Scott and her sister, Wendy by her side on Sunday June 6, which would have been her and Neil’s 51st wedding anniversary. Due to Covid-19 restrictions a funeral service will be held at a later date. 1952 ~ DENISE EARL ~ 2021

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Denise Alta Earl (Olson) on June 4th, 2021. She is survived by her mother, Colette; her five children Jason, Denise, Danielle (Mike), Jennifer and Calvin (Alicia); her grandchildren, Brett (Tysan), Ethan, Braydon (Tanisha), Austin, Camryn, Madelyn, Layton, Kinley and Maylee; and her great grandchildren, Ella, Avery, Annalise and Wednesday. Denise is also survived by her sister, Wendy (Dale); brothers, Bill (Ann) and Bob (Yvonne); her honourary brother, Joe (Donna); her brothers-in-law, Richard (Siony), Albert (Dianna), Carl (Pat); sisters-in-law Francis (Don), Charlotte (Howard), Gwen (Bill); as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and her special three-legged friend, Miranda. Denise was predeceased by her husband, Gord; father, Ken; mother-in-law, Elsie; father-in-law, Victor; and sisters-in-law Irene and Barbara. Denise was born on October 3, 1952 in Brooks, and raised on the family farm in Jenner. She moved to Medicine Hat in high school where she remained until her passing. She married the love of her life Gord on March 23, 1991 and together they raised their ever growing family until his passing in 2008. After Gord’s passing, her family continued to grow and there was no greater joy in her life than being ‘Ma’ to all of them. In addition to her family and friends Denise loved to golf, travel and work in her yard. She was also active in the community. She met and touched many people during the sixteen years she owned and operated Café Mundo. As well, she spent a great deal of time volunteering for various organizations including Victim Assistance and the Santa Claus Fund. Denise was loved by many and although she will be greatly missed, her family takes comfort in knowing that Ma and Papa are now reunited and holding hands. Together was always their favourite place to be. Those wishing to pay their respects may do so on Sunday, June 13th, 2021 at SAAMIS MEMORIAL FUNERAL CHAPEL from 2:00 to 4:00 pm or from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Due to current Covid-19 restrictions, a private memorial service will take place at 10:30 am on Monday, June 14th, 2021 at Hillside Cemetery. RICK LILLICO

1955 ~ 2021

 

It is with heavy hearts that the family of Richard Wallace ‘Rick’ Lillico, beloved husband of Bobbie, announce his unexpected passing in Montréal, Québec on Tuesday, June 8, 2021, at the age of 66 years. Along with Bobbie, Rick will be lovingly remembered by his children, Jennifer, Christopher (Raelene) and Sean (Iryna) as well as his grandchildren who he doted upon, Danika, Nolan, Marissa, Josa, Evie, Richard, Milana and Olivia. Driving fast cars was Rick’s favourite pastime as his need for speed was evident in the tickets he had to show for it. That said, his biggest love was that for his family. He would do anything for them… especially his grandchildren. They were the apples of Rick’s eye. He will be truly missed! Due to the current health restrictions in place, attendance at the service will be by invitation only. A Celebration of Rick’s life will be held at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel in Medicine Hat on Sunday, June 13, 2021, at 1:00 p.m. with Murray Jaster officiating.
