1920 ~ MATILDA SCHLAHT ~ 2021
Matilda Lenora “Tillie” Schlaht of Medicine Hat, beloved wife of the late Jacob Schlaht, passed away on Thursday, May 6th, 2021 at the age of 101 years. Tillie leaves to cherish her memory her children, Diane (Raymond) Van Bavel, Delphene Good (Gerry Schoonbaert) and Alan (Laurel) Schlaht; grandchildren, Troy (Dawn) Van Bavel, David Van Bavel, Joseph (Patti) Van Bavel, Donna Lee (Dale) Robertson, Jo Lynn Sheeshka, Dawn (Curtis Atkins) Good, Krys (Josh) Trahan and Jenna Schlaht; Helen Van Bavel; eleven great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, David and Molly Sturm; husband, Jacob Schlaht; brother, Victor Sturm; sister, Vi Casselman; and grandson, Carter Schlaht. Tillie was born on January 14th, 1920 in Estuary, SK; the youngest of three children. She started her schooling at Sandy Point and then moved across the river to complete her education at the Social Plains School. As a young girl Tillie enjoyed the great outdoors and liked to play baseball and loved her cats. Tillie met Jacob “Jack” Schlaht at a skating party held on the South Saskatchewan river area. They married in Calgary where Jack was stationed with the army in WWII and Tillie worked as a waitress at the canteen. Jack was later stationed to Vancouver where Tillie took a job as a waitress. Following the war, Tillie and Jack took over her parent’s farm. Tillie was a true example of a hardworking ranch/farm wife. She was familiar with both the challenges and opportunities that the ranch life presented. She raised a family, kept the household, and actively assisted in the running of the farm. Tillie often prepared and delivered meals out in the field. Some could say she was a pioneer of the very first “tailgate parties”. In 1979, Tillie and Jacob retired in Medicine Hat. Tillie remained active and loved to square dance. She was a member of Emil Schlenker’s group and she even had the opportunity to dance in the ocean in Bermuda. Tillie’s love for family and adventure took her to visit friends in Australia and relatives in the United States. On her 100th birthday, Tillie was overjoyed to receive a congratulatory birthday greeting from the Queen. Tillie was a friend to all and a role model to those who knew her. Her everlasting legacy is her family, and she will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved her. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Dr. Bratvold for his care and compassion as well as Dr. Hirsch, staff and residents at Riverview Care Centre who were a second family to her. Marie Elizabeth Schreiber of Medicine Hat, passed away on Monday, May 10, 2021 at the age of 92 years, beloved wife of the late Ewald Schreiber. She leaves to cherish her memory three children, Stan (Linda) Schreiber and their children, Jason (Cindy) Schreiber (Brittaney (Ethan Hammond), Braeden), Sherri (Kelly) Jans (Cody (Carissa) Knoll, Brooke, Madison), Jennifer (Steve) Piercey (Sofia); Sheila (Mike) Trieber and their son Kyle (Dawn) Trieber (Chloe, Nevaeh, Kaleb); and Stewart Schreiber (Sylvia Wenzel) and his children Carla Schreiber (Mitch Fischer) and Tyler Schreiber (Stephanie Fauser); one sister Frieda (Mike) Eckes; her sister-in-law Bertha Schmidt, Ewald’s surviving family as well as several nieces and nephews . She was predeceased by her parents Maria and John Schmidt; her husband Ewald on January 18, 1980; a special friend Frank Verhegge and one grandson Robert Trieber on May 10, 1990; one sister Katie Lutz and one brother Bill Schmidt and Ewald’s parents and siblings. Marie was born on May 24, 1928 at Manyberries and later moved to Orion. In the early 1940’s she moved to Medicine Hat where she married Ewald Schreiber on May 28, 1949. In 1980, at the age of 52, Ewald passed away from A.L.S. Following his death she began a 20 plus year relationship with Frank Verhegge. He was known as “Papa” to all her grandchildren. Marie’s family would like to thank all the staff at Riverview Care Centre for the care and compassion shown to our mother over the years. 1933 ~ Edward Moore ~ 2021
Ed Moore passed away peacefully on May 8, 2021 in Medicine Hat at the age of 87 years. Ed is survived by his son, Bernie (Gayle) Moore and family; his daughter, Brenda Moore; his sisters, Louise and Maria, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Ed was predeceased by his parents, Jim and Ellen; his wife, Marie; and his bothers, David, Jim, Phil and Reg. Ed was born in St. John’s, Newfoundland on November 22, 1933. After high school, in 1951 Ed joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and for 29 years lived and worked in various locations in Canada and Europe. In 1960, while stationed in Red Deer, Ed met Marie, his future wife of 54 years, and they were wed on May 20th, 1961 and began the travelling life of a military family, living in St John’s, Halifax, Winnipeg, Germany, and Ottawa before finally returning to Red Deer in 1976. A few years after Ed retired from the Air Force in 1980, they made their final move to Medicine Hat, where Ed worked for the federal government at CFB Suffield until permanently retiring in 1994. Over the course of his military travels and life in Medicine Hat, Ed made many long- lasting friendships. In their retirement, Marie and Ed bought a motorhome and travelled to numerous locations, back to visit family in the Maritimes and to Arizona for several winters, reconnecting with family and friends from their military days as well as making many new ones. One of Ed’s favourite things was to have his grandchildren come to visit and to take them camping in the motorhome or golfing, resulting in many happy memories for all involved. Ed also was significantly involved in the National Association of Federal Retirees, being the local branch president for several years. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Darcey Allen Job passed away on May 9th, 2021 at Carmel Hospice at St. Joseph’s Home in Medicine Hat, AB after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Medicine Hat, AB, on May 4th ,1977, son of Allen and Eileen (Lane) Job. Darcey grew up and attended school at Burstall, SK. Darcey spent those years working on the family farm, participating in school sports and the Burstall youth group, and enjoying family camping trips and visiting with family. The art of welding came into Darcey’s life. Darcey worked at Fort Mac, where he met the love of his life, Amanda. Darcey and Amanda (Wetthuhn) married in July 2011 in Killiam, AB. He acquired his journeyman’s certificate through Vermillion College. It was a career he enjoyed and he welded on oilfield equipment in Sedgewick, construction site in Edmonton and for the preparation of the pipeline in Kitimat, BC. He also did a lot of welding on the family farm. During his farming years, Darcey enjoyed volunteering with the Burstall Fire Dept., and sitting as councillor for the town of Burstall. Darcey was predeceased by his mother Eileen (Lane) Job; mother-in-law, Shaunet Wetthuhn; grandparents, William and Gusta Lane; and grandparents, Jack Job and Colleen Frisch. 1978 – CLAYTON WENZEL – 2021
Clayton Norman Wenzel passed away peacefully on May 12, 2021 at the age of 42 years, after battling a debilitatinillness. Left to cherish his memory is his wife of over 10 years, Anna Wenzel. They met in 2005 and were inseparable from then on. He also leaves to cherish his memory, his daughter, Elizabeth “Beth”; his mother, Diana Wenzel; four brothers, Dean (Marg), David, Troy (Robyn) and Kurt ; two sisters, Carol (Steve), Sandy (Harv); as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Clayton will also be fondly remembered by many friends, business associates and his Masonic Brothers with whom he attended lodge. Clayton was a third degree Mason and Past Master. He owned A Plus Equipment Rentals Ltd. with his Dad and other business partners. He ran the company for many years with pride and was known for his sharp business skills and keen intellect. Anyone who knew Clayton knew of his great love of The Philadelphia Eagles. He believed in them no matter what kind of season they were having. Clayton played football, and was Captain for Crescent Height High School. He graduated from there in 1996 and then went on to College to complete his Business diploma. He played pool on both Cash and Vegas Leagues where he won many trips to Las Vegas to play in tournaments. Clayton loved golf and was able to pass that down to his daughter Beth. He started taking her to Paradise Valley as a preschooler and got her into lessons. He saw her natural talent for the game and nurtured it. Finally, everyone knew what a champ he was at musical trivia. He is a legend in this city and was almost impossible to defeat. Clayton was predeceased by his father Harold Wenzel in 2006. He suffered the loss of many close friends through out the years. These heavy loses were felt deeply by him. Emma McElgunn
Born May 10, 1921 Southey, Saskatchewan. Died May 9, 2021 Calgary, Alberta.
Our mom, our grandma, Emma (Stettner) McElgunn, peacefully passed away surrounded by flowers, prayers and hymns one day before her 100th birthday. Emma was predeceased by her husband, Joseph McElgunn, April 2008; and by her sons, Dr. Dennis (Linda) McElgunn, March 2020 and Brian (Elaine) McElgunn, August 2020. She is survived by her children, Michela Smith (Walter), Dr. Patrick McElgunn (Karen) and Kelly (Kevin) Rockabar; her sisters, Helen Nerenberg and Marguerite Thomas; her grandchildren, Sean (Christina) and Ryan (Kristen) McElgunn; Jamie (Chad) and Byron (Nikita) McElgunn; Reilly, Adam (Andrea) and Eric (Roz) Smith; Hannah (Sam) McElgunn; and Kyle and Taylor (Carter) Rockabar; and nine great grandchildren. Emma was an executive of the Canadian Restaurant Association, was active in the family restaurants and catering businesses, was a member of the Catholic Women’s League, The Elks, The Royal Canadian Legion, Ladies of the Royal Purple, and so much more. Emma was an open-hearted woman, always inviting people into her home and around her table. Emma and Joe were great entertainers and amazing dancers. She had a penchant for rescuing those in need. Emma loved all babies – especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She played the piano, by ear, like a pro – entertaining everyone until her late, late 90’s. Emma was a strong and vibrant woman. She and Joe were inspirational parents and grandparents – sharing a passionate interest in education, learning, and adventuring with children and grandchildren. We wish her more love as she rejoins Joe, the peppery love of her life, in heaven. We would like to thank the staff of Carewest Garrison Green 4th Floor for the extraordinary and loving care they lavished on our special mom and grandma. Judith Ann Kocot passed away at the Good Samaritan Village in Medicine Hat on Thursday, May 6, 2021, at the age of 77 years after a lengthy battle with many health issues. Her memory will be forever cherished in the hearts of her son, Christopher and her daughter, Elizabeth (Eldon) as well as her grandchildren, Katie and Brayden. Judy was predeceased by her son, Matthew in 2013. She worked as a RN and graduated from the Toronto General Hospital, Class of 1965. LILLIAN MARIE RILEY

Charlene Smith, Norman Riley and daughter-in-law Cathy are sad to announce the passing of Lillian on Tuesday, May 11, 2021. Lil was born to Fred and Elizabeth Wutzke in Medicine Hat and grew up on the farm just east of the Haig School she attended. She spoke often and fondly of her youth and the hijinks she and her brother Alvin and their friends would get into. Lil married Charlie in October of 1954, and so began a lifelong love affair that ended upon Charlie’s death in February of 2018. She had missed him dearly ever since. Daughter Charlene in 1955 and son Norman in 1959, completed the family. Lil’s children were her pride and joy and they were lucky to grow up supported by her love and devotion. She would be very involved in their activities such as a 4-H leader for Charlene’s group and band booster club, etc. Lil worked side by side with Charlie on the farm and with Uncle Norman Stead who was really like a grandpa to them. She loved her life on the farm and the active and vibrant rural community of which they were a part. So many stories of fun with friends and at Conquerville community events! She was a long time member of the Conquerville W.I. until its dissolution. Lil was an accomplished quilter and seamstress and won the Alberta W.I. Best Seamstress provincial award for the creation of Charlene’s wedding dress. Lil was a great cook and worked hard to keep a big garden from which much preserving and pickling would be done. She kept making her dill pickles right up to last summer and they will be missed at the dinner tables. Her flower gardens were also lovely, and after her move to Bow Island in 2016, the condo board soon found out that yes, there would be flowerbeds under her windows! She was very much looking forward to spring things, but it was not to be. Lil and Charlie liked to take motoring trips and the most mentioned excursions were to P.E.I. in 1954 and 1988 to visit family, to California with Alex and Irene Onody, and trips to Nevada. While Charlie was a Lion, they attended many events in numerous locales. They also enjoyed a trip to Hawaii with George and Yvonne Schile. The 5 year Wutzke Reunions were always very special occasions for her. Travel weeks away seemed to come to an end with the arrival of Norman and Cathy’s children: Taryn in 1988 and Bradley and Raelyn in 1991. These three occupied a large part of Grandma’s heart. Now her attentions were turned to the grandchildren as she sewed beautiful dresses and outfits for them over the years. Lil and Charlie seemed happiest when they were attending the kids concerts, sporting events and dance and piano recitals. She stayed keenly interested in their lives as they grew into young adults and they basked in her love and concern for them. Lil will be greatly missed for her warm and welcoming smile, her stories and sense of humour, her generosity, her fierce political acuity and her keen interest in Norm’s work on the farm. Cathy will sorely miss dropping in for a visit. Also left to cherish Lil’s memory is her brother Alvin (Mary) Wutzke and his five boys and their families, Charlie’s step-brother Ernie (Doris) Jurkat and his two daughters, step-sister Marilyn (Ralph) Wilson, numerous P.E.I. relatives, many Wutzke relations, and her dear friend, Claire Fraser. Along with Charlie, Lil was predeceased by her parents, brother-in-law Russel Oginski, Uncle Norman Stead and son-in-law Jim Smith. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
